The Debt - 7/10, normalized.
A fine illustration of the fact that, yes, premise does still mean quite a bit - Worthington for example, is given a character that has nontrivial motivations and things guarding his actions. And so he acts with enthusiasm and aplomb - surprisingly enough, things aren't ever entirely bad once you've begun with spirit. (Hey - perhaps actors need intellectual stimulation as well once in a while!) A lot is made of how the temporal jump obscures, but I disagree with that - the movie takes a while to develop into the problematic (it doesn't want to turn the premise itself into an issue - fine, that's at the very least realistic, but it means it adds very little apart from a few nice in-character performances in the form of a former Nazi), and so it takes a while to unravel in assumptions slowly ground down, and characters squirming. You don't see a lot in that outside the stable of psychological thrillers - which is a pity, because I'd call the slow and festering "realistic" as well.

A bit of a sideshow - Helen Mirren was quoted during pre-production:
"My character is carrying the memory, anger and passion of the Holocaust"
- nevermind, of course, that the movie's primarily concerned about what the mythos of the Holocaust justifies, and her character makes the argument that it sure as hell wasn't the 40-year-old-lie - so we've essentially got a bit of buttering up that works both ways for Mirren. Just amazing. If you believe the movie's about Israeli pluck proven, you just look at Mirren and discard the more problematic elements of the movie; otherwise you can take it all in.
Took a slight detour on my Shyamalan marathon because I just saw:
M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth
ok..man...
WHAT IT DO....
I liked it.
One pet peeve of mine when it comes to sci-fi flicks set way into the future is how friggin' present people tend to act. Rarely do I see futuristic films where characters have actually evolved from our time. Heck 30 years ago people acted differently.. yet 300+ years ahead, e.g. Star Trek.. is filled with lackluster throwaway, forgettable people. That has to be said because the new Star Trek, with all things considered, was nothing new for me. (I did enjoy it, regardless)
There's something about what Fresh Prince and son does that's different. The cultural make-up that seems to make up how people act is simply... not there. This is weirdly.. what I felt added to the film. People may call this bad acting, but I need to think about this.
I found myself intrigued by what camalam was doing. It's definitely not a dumb withdrawn feature which plays to the gimmick of Wills and co at it again together. The entire movie is more focused on the young dude's journey to take his father's strength and conquer his own conflict rather than "father and son on a fun space adventure". Very ruggedly crafted environment, a waft of futuristic technology usage that I enjoyed (Something that was very much LACKING in the Star Trek film).
The movie only stammers, when "getting out" the point of the damn thing. It needed to be more touching and human for it to work properly for audiences. In the end, something did pull together and there's a subtle twist which does bring things in. There are rough edges here and there, but not once did I feel like shaking my head in shame. I just sat back, believed in karmalama, and felt good when his name came up.
Now this film will fail, it's panned and I was there in the best seat with only 6 other people in the screening. (released today here)
I'm going to guess I'll be alone with my enjoyment, but it's all good in the hood.
To conclude:
M. Night Shit-a lamb, this ain't half bad.
quite a quality swift review here:

oh and since series count
House of Cards 8.8/10
The ending was a bit abrupt but overall amazing.
Stand Up Guys
7/10
Pleasantly surprised, some iffy acting and the finale was kinda weak but it was definitely enjoyable.
After Earth 7/10.
Was extremely short and the story was... boring to put it simply.

I've had some really, really major issues with this film. Spoony's review goes far more in-depth than this, but i'll try to summarize it-
[sp]The premise and the plot are stupid. So, essentially, aliens attack the earth with monsters who are only able to see people by smelling their fear pheromones or some shit like that. Apparently, mankind's extremely retarded solution to this problem is to spend time and money on creating warriors who are completely fearless- As opposed to, oh I don't know, wearing hazmat suits? Putting a bag on your fucking head could blind those monsters, for crying out loud.
Why are there no guns? Or armed robots? Why are everyone fighting with sticks? How did Will Smith get back to the tail of the spaceship after he was clearly sucked out? Why did earth suddenly evolve completely different animals in a course of just 1000 years? If every animal on planet earth has "evolved to kill humans", how come they never fucking do anything? If the earth freezes over every night, how come it's covered in rain forests? Why does the earth freeze over every night anyway? Why does a fucking BEACON need a signal? Isn't it supposed to send a signal OUT?
THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. There's only so much I can suspend my disbelief before calling bullshit on what is clearly lazy writing.[/sp]
clue 3/10 im pissed i wanted it to be good but NO
Back to the Future, haven't seen it for ages. Better than I remembered it, I first watched it when I was like 8 so I didn't appreciate it a whole lot.
9/10

you're talking about the 80s movie based on the board game, right?
if so, WHAT THE FUCK MAN. that movie is fantastic.

Yes, lots of rough edges. There really should have been more ground on what the heck happened and less waffle in the script.
Still doesn't explain why I liked the film. Cheesy things like "fast season changes" and "speed evolution" didn't bother me at all weirdly. It's the kind of farfetched nature of films I can forgive, e.g. Shyamalan's Sixth Sense in which [sp]dead people move items around [/sp] without anyone noticing.
I think the fact that it's in key with a lot of spiritual things. As Kermode hinted in his review, "It's a journey for the kid to go from one place to another, on land and within himself". Yet he goes on to say. that he should become a dull dud in order to do so. There's just more to it than that and it's confusing. Forever I'll be confused.

I expected this to be "Transformer 2" tier bad, but it really isn't...
Moonrise Kingdom
Most adorable thing ever. 10/10

that didn't mean I liked it as much as The Master... just that I was confused about why I liked it.

haven't seen the film but i'd just like to say that spoony doesn't do reviews anymore, he does 2 hour long rambling vlogs that are longer than the actual films he's watched, it's fucking sad

the writing is funny as hell but the execution in general sucks ass (christopher lloyd was criminally boring)

like i LOVE the opening music
it would make a great play, but as a movie its
Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, redux - 7.5/10.
A complete class act - I'm not surprised, at the very least, that it's easier to read far more into a conflict between characters piecing together a backbone behind conspiracy than just relying on the supernatural alone (as the previous one had to detour often to - and then it was lurid and did nothing but bring us into gunfights in shadowy dungeons. No opportunity to develop anything there.) I've nothing to complain about - in fact, I found the boxing-with-words scene and the aftermath the highlight of the movie's articulacy: Holmes contributes a provocation; Moriarty contributes - not just in the name of one-upsmanship, but in the name of the intellectual game itself; but ultimately comes to the wrong conclusion only because he refuses to tread where Holmes feels right at home: Moriarty the self-serving psychopath cannot see Holmes fighting against, at the very least, the collateral damage (and all the humanism that implies) at the ultimate cost.
And then Hollywood has to come in and make the ending less sordid than in the original text. But it's no great loss - we've just lost the frosting. Most of the value's in the intricacies embroidered onto the plot anyhow.
Is "Departures" any good?
Is "Departures" any good?
yes, very strong, sweet film.
Point Break
8.5/10
Really fun film, good action, interesting characters to match the story, and good acting. It was weird to see Keanu Reaves that age though, at first I wasn't sure if it was him as he looked so young. And it funny to see the guy that plays Dr Cox on scrubs as a different character and still act like an asshole :v:
Straw dogs (1971)
Sam Peckinpah's original flic about a couple looking for some peace and quiet in rural England. Obviously things take a turn. I thought the film was quite badly acted in places and some of the scenes were clumsy. The tension however was built up very well in a similar style to American werewolf. Overall the film was ok but not the classic I had been lead to believe.

Was hoping this was the superior Hoffman performance, he was so damn good in Midnight Cowboy.
Was hoping this was the superior Hoffman performance, he was so damn good in Midnight Cowboy.
He was ok but the whole thing was clumsy. People beating each other and deliberately and obviously holding back. The whole thing felt like one of those old hammer films. There was some controversy about this film for years and even that didn't move me. Midnight Cowboy is a killer tho. Marathon man, so many Hoffman has done
The Place Beyond the Pines 8/10
I was expecting something else, but what I got was so much better. And muh feels! I wasn't prepared to have any, but the end ;_;
Is Event Horizon worth watching? I've always wanted to see it but I always hear that it's bad, critically.
Rewatching Indiana Jons And The last Crusade
It's a good adventure movie but my god Indy is an idiot that destroys everything he discovers.

The first 2/3rds of the movie are really good for a Sci-Fi movie, the ending was totally shit for me.

the fuck? I'm about to watch this.
I just saw temple of doom in 1080 and it's stunning, however i grew up with the PG version and I dunno.. it's weird seeing new things when the version I've watched a billion times is stuck in me.
