7/10 Sherlock 2 (maybe even a 6/10)
My problem with it was it essentially turned into a big action flick rather than the first one which had more thriller elements. Also, the slow-mo signature of this series was used too much for my taste. I don't know why but I felt like the characters weren't nearly as interesting this time. Without giving away too much, there is a certain event that happens very early in the movie. I felt it would have been more effective to explore the impact this had on Holmes (basically wasn't covered at all). There were also a couple loose ends that were left open...but those could possibly lead to a sequel (although I doubt they will). Basically, it was still a fun movie, but unlike the first one, I felt like this was a run-of-the-mill action flick (which is fine).
You can't tell me that you didn't enjoy Sherlock doing the slow-down planning thing only to be countered by Moriarty at every turn. Also I think Sherlock 3 is already in the works.
How to Train Your Dragon 2: As good as the first/10.
Incredible.
Munich - 10/10
Hell of a long movie, but every scene was necessary. Brutal action and I loved the cinematography. Eric Bana was really friggen good and funnily enough also happen to have a sex scene (the one at the end) I've seen in few films that was actually meaningful and was just pure emotion. I'm not sure how true to the real events it was but the character development was really well done. This is one of those films that touches your soul a little. I really, really liked it.
Oh and Daniel Craig was pretty excellent in the few big moments he had.
Jesus christ, what happened to the creativity of Spongebob. Now they are releasing a CG/Live action sequel next year, what the fuck

spongebob just got weirder and weirder, it's no longer funny
i feel like most kids shows are getting weirder and weirder tbh
Oblivion was okay, it's just that the huge reveal was meaningless due to the trailers.

Plus, there was a lot of plot-related invincibility.
but it was a hackneyed twist that was super obvious and ripped straight from moon
i was intrigued by Oblivion up until you saw the obvious coming
but it was a hackneyed twist that was super obvious and ripped straight from moon
why do you care so much
i mean yeah moon was fucking awesome and oblivion was nowhere near as good as it
but oblivion was one of those "hey this doesn't look horrible i'll go see it with some friends" movies
Edge of Tomorrow: 7 or maybe 6 depending on multiple viewings/10
I enjoyed myself with this, but it seems like the more I think about the plot the more problems and flaws I see with it.
Like the fact that he keeps repeating life over and over is the writers basically saying [sp]"I cannot explain it therefore aliens."[/sp]

Ok..It's my fault.
Moon was great . watched it recently again.
Def a 8/10 movie, really sad, too
Loved the main actor guy, Rockwell, he was good.
Also watched talhotblond
Documentary about a "cyber love triangle" and how it lead to one man being "cyber-sexed to death"
It felt very like a documentary. I dunno how to explain it but something about the cheesy music and the almost powerpoint screen transitions made it feel like something I would've watched in a secondary school geography class.
Anyway it was an intriguing story about 3 lives intertwined through the internt.
I was a bit disturbed by how much they portrayed the Actual murderer as some poor victim who'd been manipulated by an internet woman. There's no doubt the woman was completely nuts too but she didn't kill anyone.
Almost everyone seemed want her locked up. One of them implied that he wanted to beat her, but he couldn't say because of the cameras. That was hilarious.
6.5/10 I suppose. Couldve done a better job.

8/10 that was awesome, and really is like a sci-fi dark souls.
Yes that's exactly what it felt like. Just retrying this impossible task until you get lucky or just memorise the whole thing
Don't think it was as good as looper, which was a better Sci Fi action movie.
Fun fact: Both Daniel Day-Lewis and Angelina Jolie were knighted recently by Queen Elizabeth II, so now it's sir Daniel Day-Lewis and dame Angelina Jolie (although she's not British, so I doubt she'll be using it officially) :v:

Its by far the best Dreamworks film and the title is very misleading. I suggest it to anyone who likes animated features.

ive seen it
and as a huge fan of dreamworks, that isn't their best film at all
So I went to see 22 Jump Street.
Surprise of the summer for me personally. I was on a bit of a hate train for this film. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one but when the trailers rolled around for this second one, I was EXTREMELY skeptical. However, this one keeps the spirit, the freshness (completely ironically), and the humbleness about it that made the first one such a fun and cute movie.
All of the good bit parts from the original like Ice Cube and the Police Chief (Ron Swanson) have even more of the best lines in the film like last time. Lots of cameos with great lines too
The thing that surprised me the most was the good directing. They made good use of clever effects and angles to really make the movie special.
There is also one other thing they do in this film. The constant mocking of the stupid ideas that hollywood has. There was some funny ass references in there that only I in the theater noticed though :( (the entire theater was full, i had to sit in the bottom row!)
I would say more but im on the phone. 8.5/10, maybe lower on second viewing?

EoM > Looper
Don't get me wrong, Looper was good and enjoyable, but as far as time travel movies go, Edge of Tomorrow was definitely the superior flick.
Though Emily Blunt was hotter in Looper, I got more of a boner of her in that exoskeleton, 8/10 would fight with.
Pain and Gain (Dir. Michael Bay, 2013)- 7/10
Ignoring the inherent immorality of adapting these real life events into a comedy film, which I very easily did having never heard of the real people or their story before the film, this was thoroughly enjoyable. I'm a Mark Wahlberg fan and quite liked him in this, not his best but he had good presence and was entertaining. The Rock was the show-stealer, though. His character was silly but fun and pretty dark, his comedic timing is, as proven since his wrestling career, excellent. The film's full of fun dialogue and a ridiculous screenplay full of twists and turns that keep it exciting, you never really know where it's going or how they're gonna mess it up this time. This is a bit of a departure, quite honestly, and it's a breath of fresh air. It's comparatively smaller than Bay's usual work (and with a budget of $25m, about 1/10th as pricey) but in direction it is still grandiose, and is much more a comedy, as well as being darker than his other stuff. As a director Michael Bay shines here. This is the kind of stuff he should make more often. Not that I'm a part of the silly "Bay is the worst director in the world" bandwagon. (Bay is a competent director who can be pretty great at times, always creating entertaining and visually stunning popcorn flicks. He is far from talentless and has a clearly well thought out style and intent which he pulls off most every time. He has a very discernible style. You can tell when you're watching a Michael Bay movie. As a director he isn't generic but I won't deny his scripts rarely stray from the worn path- not that he writes them, though. I think with a strong script Michael Bay could make a great action film. Like an 8/10 or something. I can't wait for that day and I hope it comes. Pain & Gain wasn't too far off. )
I've heard a lot of complaints about this film glorifying the protagonists, but I really don't agree. I mean, I get it, they live it up, but I mean WOWS did similarly and was lauded for its portrayal (not to compare Scorsese and Bay). These dudes are fucking morons and they're portrayed as such. They're in way over their heads, they're not as smart as they think, they fuck things up, they ruin everything, and they're dumbass criminals. I'm amazed they even got anywhere in their illegal endeavors. The film's also full of satire poking fun at the American Dream (as much as I really hate to use the term...) which isn't incredibly thought provoking or anything, like it's nothing most people don't know, but it works and just further solidifies these characters' status and builds Lugo (Wahlberg) from it as there's a fair bit of narration used for comedic effect, his rants about how "all heroes are self-made" etc is just laughable (deliberately). The dude's pathetic. There's also a few scenes that are really great. [sp]the scene where they try to kill the guy whose money they stole by framing him for drunk driving[/sp] and [sp]all the stuff where Lugo accidentally kills the porn director with the weight[/sp] were brilliant scenes, with Bay's direction shining, hinting that perhaps if Bay calmed down he could make a really great smaller film. I was impressed by his restraint and tentativeness during those scenes.
Overall a great fun movie, the comedy is decent, falls flat a bit at times but sometimes it's really damn funny. Michael Bay's direction is very good, creating some beautiful imagery as he always does along with some nice quirks in style and great pacing and keeping it consistently entertaining. The Michael Bay hate-train has gone beyond sense and I don't think he is nearly as bad as everyone says but this is definitely one of his best films. Recommended to anyone looking for a film to just have some fun with, and this would definitely be a great choice if that's what you're looking for. It what I wanted and I got it pretty totally.
We Need To Talk About Kevin (Dir. Lynne Ramsay, 2011)- 7/10
I watched this because it's directed by Lynne Ramsay, who is a Scottish director, and as a Scottish aspiring filmmaker I was interested in seeing her work. This is the first of her films I've seen, she's made 3 over the past 15 years. I was surprised upon starting this to find that it was very much an art film. The film follows the mother (played brilliantly by Tilda Swinton) of a boy (Ezra Miller as a teen) who has since a very young age been notably disturbed and sociopathic. This expressionistic and visually stunning film plays out of chronology, going from snippets or whole scenes of things in Kevin's life as a toddler to a 16 year old boy. I found the film fascinating and I loved the characters. Although I call it expressionistic in its style, the characters are very much real. Kevin is a character I would describe as truly evil. He is manipulative and destructive, a true sociopath with absolutely no empathy or care for other people. Some of the things he does blow my mind. How can a person be like that? But also, he is a fantastically realised character with depth, we don't understand him particularly but we observe his life and we know him. The film is about Kevin but also about the trials of parenthood, specifically as a mother. I was unfortunate enough to have the concept of the film ruined so I won't do so here, as I said the film is edited out of order so the flashes to present leave a lot of mystery in the film (although it's easy enough to work out/piece together as the film goes on)
Recommended to anyone looking for a haunting but great looking movie and one with fascinating characters and expert direction.
Paranoid Park (Dir. Gus Van Sant, 2007)- 8/10
A great, very meditative film about a skater kid dealing with issues in his own life while the death of a security guard near the titular skatepark is investigated. Beautifully and dreamily shot in 4:3, this film takes its time and plays out not totally linearly, and is doesn't rely on dialogue but visuals to tell its story and convey feelings. That's what I loved so much about this great film. This is a visual poem, with emotionally compelling cinematography that tells the story more than the dialogue or actions. The camera shows us Alex's emotions, we see his guilt not through his acting as the character is very closed off. (a great obvious example is when Alex is talking to his dad. The camera is a close-up of Alex, we see the dad in the background but it's totally out of focus. The entire dialogue plays out just super close in on Alex without the dad ever coming into focus at all- we can see from this how closed off he is, how distant and remote he's become since the event that the story revolves around. We see it instead through the expressionistic use of close-ups and tracking shots, and the just magical use of slow-mo Super8 to shoot the skateboarding scenes. It reminded me of one of my favourite films, Gummo, which I know Van Sant loved, so maybe that's not a coincidence.
The film is very introspective and is all about realistically exploring the inner workings of guilt and how it eats away. I would call this film a visual poem. Recommended to anyone looking for something that's realistic but also pretty magical with very emotive and expressive cinematography, it's short as well at 85 minutes and it makes use of its length well. Definitely worth a watch.
Elephant (Dir. Gus Van Sant, 2003)- 8.5/10
Just coming off watching this. After loving Paranoid Park I went back and watched what is supposed to be Van Sant's winning modern masterpiece (I say this because Van Sant's career can clearly be split in two- his more accessible, straight forward films of the 80's-90's (Drugstore Cowboy,My Own Private Idaho which I will watch soon, and Good Will Hunting, as well as the Psycho remake which is an interesting experiment but a quite terrible film) and his more experimental and arthouse films (Gerry being the first, Elephant being his supposed Opus, Paranoid Park also falling under this). He returned to the mainstream with the absolutely fantastic Milk (a 9/10 in my books) which is in my opinion one of the best films of the 21st century. But yes, after GWH he was inspired by director Bela Tarr to change his style and do, I guess, what he really wanted to do, so he went independent for more creative control. Apparently it paid off, cos despite its great controversy this film won him the Palme D'or at Cannes. Interestingly I actually wrote 7/10 for this film at first, but as I was writing this, I began to realise the absolute mastery behind the film, and coming into this post I was kinda confused as to how, despite being a good film, it wasn't Palme D'or good at all. But within like 15 minutes I suddenly just was like, "wait. Damn. I get it!". So if anyone does watch this, and I highly recommend you do, give it time to sink in before you decide your opinion on the film. Let it simmer because the genius of it is pretty subtle and restrained.
Anyways. It's a film that, for the most part, takes place around the same 10 or so minutes from several different perspectives of kids in high school. The final 30 minutes progresses from what we've already seen. There is no 3 act structure here. This is another really short film, 78 minutes. And it really uses its length well again to not draw its welcome too long and keep everything concise so as to not drag. It's not a fast paced film but it flies by and not just because of the running time. It's engaging from start to finish and your reasons for that engagement will change as the film progresses. I was unfortunate enough to know the basis of this film (although I'm sure that if you've heard of the film you know its premise and notoriety) and I feel like going in knowing nothing would have made it a very different film.
I'm really not totally sure of how I feel about this film at all, which is why I said it's a tentative 7. At one end of the spectrum I understand that this film is trying to capture, in a very detached and voyeuristic way, snippets of high school life in a way that we see all these kinda stereotypical characters as the same, so that come the 60 minute mark we can see things from their perspective more, and thus it'll have more impact. How all these guys see are these little bits of conversation in the hallways, how they never really see who they are as people, etc. They form their opinions but don't know anyone and created these stereotypes themselves. I've seen already people complain about lack of character development but the characters are for what they are well written and their lack of depth is entirely deliberate. On the other hand, now I will say that already this side is fading as I feel like simply going over the film in my head is giving me a clearer perspective, this film is kinda... Empty. It doesn't really say a lot, there's no deep message in this movie. But there's not trying to be. It's, unfortunately, perhaps more relevant now than it has been since its 2003 release, for obvious reasons do you know what it's about (saying anything more than what I've already said about the plot will spoil it). It's a great looking film with very obvious colour motifs which I'll pay more attention to on a second watch (this is definitely a film I want to watch again, to try and wrap my head around)
I tend to finish these with a "recommended if" but this time I'll say I do not recommend this film if you're in high school because honestly it is so painfully real and possible that were I still in school I'd have been shaken to the fucking core. This film is absolutely masterful in that aspect. It is relentless and it doesn't shy, it's horrifying. Recommended, however, if you are looking for something quick but also something thoroughly fascinating and engaging with great great buildup and a payoff well worth the 45 minutes of seeing the same 10 minutes from different people's POV (not that the first 45 mintues is bad! I found it totally engaging)
The Grand Budapest Hotel - 9/10
I don't think I've seen a movie like it. Alternating between the 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios didn't affect me as much as I thought it would have. Very good and humorous watch.
I watched Grand Budapest recently as well. Watched it again the next day because I loved it so much

I liked Looper but it's more of a thinking sci-fi movie whereas Edge of Tomorrow is an action sci-fi. If you feel like kicking your feet up, eating some popcorn while watching an entertaining movie, EOT is what you want.
The thing about that is Looper isn't really all that more "high-brow" than Edge of Tomorrow. Especially when Looper eventually devolves into [sp]Bruce Willis shooting up gang thugs with a P90 and a psychic kid blowing shit up cause he's cranky[/sp].
Looper pretends to be more than it actually is, Edge of Tomorrow knows what it is and runs with it, making it a much more enjoyable film.
X-Men: Days of Future Past: 8.5/10
A bit disappointed it was just [sp]another Wolverine film fighting off Magneto as he tricks everyone into thinking he's doing the right thing when he really just wants humans to fuck off. At least we know the next film clears out the dingleberries left from X2 and X3. Really wanted more from the rest of the original xmen cast but oh well. Feels at the end where everyone was dying.[/sp]

What I meant by that was that he had majority screen time, he was "the one to go back", etc.
21 Jump Street - 7.5/10
Made me laugh quite a lot, but in comparison to some other comedies I was hoping for a bit more. The movie definitely has some heart to it. I felt like some things went by too quickly though, like Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's characters bonding way too quickly (even if it was for comedic effect). I definitely wouldn't just befriend someone who bullied me through all of highschool. Besides some things like that, I thought it was very nicely made. One thing that shocked me was [sp]how violent it got in the last 20 minutes, lol. Charred bodies and severed penises everywhere.[/sp]
Something that definitely detracted from my experience was (I'm getting some hate for this) the fact that I watched it in a higher framerate, which really cheapened the look of it in a lot of shots. After I finished the movie over my friend's house I went home and looked at a few scenes back at 24/30 fps, and jesus the production quality looked so much better that way. I understand the use of a high framerate for erratic movements in fight scenes, or landscape panning shots, but for everything else it just looks terrible imo.
