The Raid 2
5/5
Abso-fucking-beautiful, goes to show that it doesn't take a bunch of celebrity star-faces and hundreds of millions of dollars to make a good action film.
Snowpiercer - 8/10
Okay, the social commentary in this movie is about as subtle as getting hit by, well, a freight train. However, there were other redeeming values that made it a great movie.
First, the movie was made by a Korean director, with a combination of Korean and American staff, with actors of several different nationalities. With all of that, it managed to avoid being a complete mess. The diversity shows, too, because the movie feels and flows distinctively different from anything that comes out of Hollywood.
Second, there is some great imagination at work. The world-building was partially credited to the source material, but there were unexpected twists, turns, and pace and atmosphere changes all over the place. Some of my favorite sequences were [sp]the tunnel and the NVGs, Chris Evans and Badass Mook attempting to shoot each other as the train went around a sharp turn, and Allison Pill pulling out a fucking gun and shooting people.[/sp] I respect a movie that can throw things at you that you aren't expecting.
Third, they embraced an ending that would probably not fly with Hollywood studio executives. It was a dark movie the whole time, [sp]and they stuck to that theme instead of bitching out with an excessively hopeful ending. Nice job breaking it, hero.[/sp]
This was completely unexpected and I had a great time watching it. If you can get through a bit of eye-rolling at the allegories and the occasional dialog infodump, it is totally worth seeing.

The first one was a great surprise, I should really get on to watching the second one.
ip man 2 - 8/10
ive never been one for kung-fu movies, especially ones with subtitles, but both of these were amazing

I would say the first one is perhaps a wee-bit better, but as a sequel it's great.

And as obvious, don't watch them dubbed in English. (Who in their right mind would even do that?)
i preferred the second one, and i absolutely loved the first. the second just amps it up in every possible way. im doing them back to back with my mates tonight
raid 1 was disappointing, raid 2 improved on it in every conceivable way.
I liked Raid 1 but hoping Raid 2 has more backbone in the story. I only saw 1 for the stuntwork and only remember the stuntwork...
The great thing about Raid 2 is that the story is really different, and the movie itself has a bit of a different "feel". They did a good job at making them both unique, and I loved them both pretty much equally.
the worlds end
not as bad as i expected it to be considering what a lot of people here were saying about it. in fact, it's pretty damn good, just not shaun of the dead or hot fuzz good
I thought the raid was very average.

While watching Raid 2 I felt like I have a déjà vu. The very same transformation I've witnessed while watching Tropa de Elite and Tropa de Elite 2. The first one was a great, but also a simple film with a humble budget about cleaning brazilian favelas with basic corruption in the background. The second part was a full-scale blockbuster an amazing crime thriller surpassing the first installment in almost every aspect.

It doesn't have much under its surface, but I absolutely adore the choreography of the fight scenes.

Well you thought wrong.

I think it has the most depth compared to the others in the series, but the least memorable scenes in general.

Hot Fuzz manages to have a good story with depth while still being consistently hilarious.
The Fault in our Stars 3/5
Not sure why they had to speak with a thesaurus and the bit where [sp] they fucking kiss at anne franks house and everyone starts clapping [/sp] was some true euphoric shit.
The Duellists
4/5
An interesting movie, and Ridley Scott's first. I was a little concerned at first, because given the title, you would expect the film to focus on both of the duellists, played by Kieth Carradine and Harvey Kietel, but much of it is focused on Carradine and his struggles. Not a bad thing, but it would have been better to see them both have equal characterization.
The biggest parts of the movie are the duels, which are amazing and intense to watch. From fencing, to straight up cavalry charging each other, they are something else.
It amazes me that Ridley Scott was able to make this movie on the budget he had, which was a little more than $9,000, which even in 1977, was a really small budget, and everything looks so great.
Hot Fuzz
Although I have yet to see The World's End, I feel secure in saying that this is my favorite of the Cornetto trilogy. As a cop-mystery type of movie, it works solidly and could be enjoyed by fans of the genre. As a comedy movie, it works brilliantly and can be enjoyed by anybody with some sense of humor. Pegg and Frost work together amazingly, and the rest of the cast is sprinkles on the top. If you have to pick between Point Break or Bad Boys 2, pick neither and go with this.
Fargo
This is my third Coen Brothers' film, and it was spectacular. It lies in a sort of middle ground between the others I have seen. It has the pulse-pounding action and suspense of No Country For Old Men, but it also has some of the humor of The Big Lebowski. It is greatly enjoyable for anyone who likes movies. If this is how people talk all the time in Minnesota, then sign me up to move there. The accents were amazing. Overall, definitely give this a watch. You will not be disappointed.
Pulp Fiction
At one point, this was my all-time favorite movie, and it still rests high up on the list. I've seen this one countless times. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't like this one. The action is well executed and the humor accents what is going on quite well. The dialogue is nice and is (very obviously) extremely quotable. The non-linearity adds to the experience, but I would be interested in seeing a fan edit of the movie in chronological order. If you are one of the few people that haven't seen this one, go grab yourself a Big Kahuna Burger and a Sprite, sit yourself down, and have a good time.
Synecdoche, New York
This is my second time seeing this one. This movie is one that you just have to see more than once. The first time was spent mostly absorbing what was happening, the plot and all that stuff. This time, however, I was more focused on the symbolism and various themes in the film. I feel that the second time through was a more enjoyable time than the first, and the first was still an amazing time. The plot may not be too easy for an average Joe to follow, but if you can get past some of the difficulties, you are in for one amazing film. Give this one a go if you're in the mood for something deeper and more melancholy.
Doc of the Dead
This was an interesting documentary about the history of zombie films and the rise of modern-day zombie culture. A lot of the film history stuff was stuff I already knew, but I still learned some new information. It has interviews with some big names in zombies, such as George Romero, Max Brooks, and Robert Kirkman. It gives some nice little facts and is all edited together in a neat package. If you want a documentary on zombie culture, this is for you.
It's a shame that Hot Fuzz's humour doesn't translate very well. Watching it with my friends (who are italian and don't speak english) it didn't make them laugh nearly as much. It's not a defect of the film in itself mind you, but it's just a shame that it isn't appreciated so much on an international level. Sadly I'm one of the few people I know that finds it hilarious and exciting.
also it's sad how all these people watch the dubbed version of every movie, it takes away the strenght of the acting and comedies turn to shit when dubbed. It's like missing out on a whole new world of entertainment.

sounds to me like your friends are just dumb
it's like me trying to watch the new guys with non-NYers, it's just not as funny to them, because it's one of those films where being immersed in the culture makes it that much better.
The Last of the Mohicans
4/5
A different, but solid outing from Michael Mann.

I thought about watching The Raid dubbed, but I made it through approximately one sentence before I gave up and switched to subtitles

Snowpiercer
7/10
What a weird movie
I liked Raid 1 but hoping Raid 2 has more backbone in the story. I only saw 1 for the stuntwork and only remember the stuntwork...
the raid 2 was written before the raid 1. however they weren't able to make it for budgetary and resource reasons, so the raid 1 was written. after raid 1's success, they were able to make the movie they originally wanted, and reworked it to tie into the original.
[editline]27th June 2014[/editline]
so yeah, it has more story backbone.
22 Jump Street
9/10

I watched the first one in English for the comedy value of the horrible dub.
It's one of these terrible dubs/VA that actually makes the thing better. Deus Ex wouldn't be nearly as god if it didn't have moments like A BOMB.
RIPD: 6/10
Eh. Fun. I guess. MIB was better.
Kick Ass 2: 3/10
It's bad don't watch it
Goodfellas (1990); 9/10.
Scorsese at his finest, a near perfect film.
Clerks (1994); 8/10.
Second viewing of this, I love Kevin Smith's films, pretty much all of the jokes in this one make me laugh, it's great.
