I agree. I do my best to read as fast as I can while taking in details, or I'll break up my reading etc. I know what you mean though and missing.subtleties in a performance or in the mise en scene can take a little a way from a film, but less than what a dub will if you ask me.
Dubbing is only allowed in cartoons and animated films - it's much easier to hide errors with lip-syncing and sometimes it's better than original version (the good example would be Shrek 2, I watched in English and it was mediocre at best, but in polish dubbing it was even funnier than the first part).
Here in Eastern Europe we have third solution - voice-over. It's the most common form in television (and non-existent in cinemas). It's not ideal, but it's good for people too lazy to read and it maintains some level of original dialogue. I prefer subtitles, but it has it's charm - I love playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R in russian with voice-over, same with certain soviet films.
Blue is the Warmest Color: 6 or maybe 7/10
It's alright, but it really feels like movie I've seen before except with lesbians.
How do you mean voice over? Like they put the English over the Russian (to use your Stalker example ps gr8 games) or like a proper, written just for that version voice over where they describe what's going on? Both are kinda interesting to me, actually

Also when I get home I'm gonna sit down and watch a supposedly great film, not sure what, but man I've been teaching highschoolers filmmaking last week and been.busy this weekend so the majority of exposure to feature films has been 16 year old girls fuckin gushing over The Faults In Our Stars like damn I didn't know people actually would love that disgracefully inappropriate kiss on the Anne Frank museum or the morally off centre "it's a metaphor" scene it blew my mind

"I'm john green and I am a warrior for love in all walks of life so I choose to tackle the one most oppressed - American white hetero love in a middle to upper class environment. What a fucking savior I am. Bow to me. Give me your money. Let me fuck your 16 year old daughter cos that is clearly what I want to do cos I was a loser in high school and channel it by writing lame generic romance novels

A specific voice actor with a neutral voice, called "lektor", is hired for reading the translated script (nowadays it's all recorded, thirty years back they did it live). He reads all parts the same way, male or female, and unlike dubbing, his voice does not need to much the movement of lips on screen - you're supposed to hear the actors speaking. It's very easy to fuck it up and make it bad or annoying, but the best lektors perfected this craft that you're able to immerse yourself completely and forget about them in a minute.
We have a small culture connected with it - some lektors achieved cult status, and are easily recognized after one word. It's kinda awesome.
Here, have some funny comparision:

As I said, in most cases I prefer subtitles, but this is a very unique part of Eastern European culture that I think it's worth preserving.
The Raid 2
9/10
It really is as good as everyone says
The Raid: Redemption - 7.5 throats impaled on a broken door out of 10
I just watched this just to be more hyped about The Raid 2 though, because everyone's saying it's leagues better.
I generally like to glorify the Raids with every chance I get. Comparing the relatively low budgets of the Raids to some other high-budget action films is mind-blowing enough.
the raid 1 & 2 are pretty much my definitive action flicks, fantastic films.
Just watched the Grand Budapest Hotel. 9.5/10
Goddamn do I love me some Wes Anderson. He's not for everyone, but I love him.
Wayne's World = 10/10 just as i remembered it

That movie fucks me up because Rob Lowe looks exactly the same in that movie as he does now, 25 years later.
I want my friend to watch the Raid movies but for some reason he just hates subtitles. Tried to tell him that the first was actively worse with dubbing but he won't listen. Even though he watched Battle Royale with subtitles and had no problem with it.
Same here, I have a similar type of friend, but I gotta admit he's a bit more irritating..
I mean basically, he refused the suggestion because the Raid is not American and doesn't have like Swarzenegger in it, figuratively speaking but still I'm serious. When he thinks of action, he only thinks of R-15 action films as far as I can tell, older films too. Nothing wrong with that per se, but shooting down other suggestions without a second thought?
And he's also hugely opposed to using subtitles, so the Raid was definitely out of the question.
"I don't care" even though he's an "action films fan" himself. Uggghh....
Same goes for Stallone's Dredd vs Karl's Dredd. Guess which film he prefers to the point of not even caring about the other? The classic of course. It's not even fair to compare these two Dredds because they are unrelated to one another. 2012 Dredd is simply a newer adaption of the Judge Dredd that actually does a good job at it, pays homage to it. Even more so than the 95's Dredd because from what I've read, it might as well be a PG-13 film.

People were also talking about subtitles getting in the way of catching details in films, and there is a point in that, which my above-mentioned friend also uses.
BUT (there's always a but)-- in no way has subtitles ever stopped me from eyeballing out every last detail of the film, or from having the characters constantly under my watch. You can watch films more than once, too.
It also depends how good the film is, how deep / well written etc. Some films do not have much to miss on, and some films could possibly be so bad that even the most intelligent or observant viewer would miss the entire point of the film.

Party on, Garth!
I love Ralph Fiennes so much but I wish he'd get more "good guy" parts. He's a spectacular villain but I'd like to see him as the protagonist more.
YOU'RE AN INANIMATE FUCKING OBJECT
Transformers: Age of Extinction
7/10
I didn't think it was a great movie by any means. However, it had a few actors I love (TJ Miller, Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammer, and John Goodman). The actions scenes were engaging and not too over the top and the dinosaur transformers were probably the absolute best part of the whole movie. It was definitely better than the last three.
that movie got like 15% on rotten tomatoes but optimus prime rides into battle with a giant sword on a fucking transforming dinosaur so i don't care if the guy who takes my ticket has to shit inside my mouth before i get to enter the theater, i'm still going to watch it
question about age of extinction
do the dinobots talk
specifically, does the T-Rex go "ME GRIMLOCK, ME SMASH"
I have found a helpful, spoiler-filled FAQ that should answer all your TF: AoE questions. It also raises a new one. Specifically, how the fuck can anyone say they liked this movie when it devotes an entire scene to having the lead female's boyfriend creepily explain how his relationship with a minor is not legally considered Statutory Rape?
Anyways, here's the FAQ. Unfortunately it's an io9 article, but still: http://io9.com/transformers-age-of-extinction-the-spoiler-faq-1598579492

EDIT: I should check the AoE thread to see if this was posted there first.
But as Michael Bay has either researched or clearly had someone research for him, there is an exemption for minors who are willingly having sex with people within three years of age. So Dyson is legally fucking Tessa, and to prove it, he brings out a laminated copy of said law, which he carries around with him.
That's a little bit horrible.
Then again if you were that dude and were asked regularly you might consider carrying that around with you
In like your phone or something, though. Who the hell laminates something?
Laminating things is fun.
there has been a distinct lack of doctorhooves recently
He died of a bad opinion overdose.
question about age of extinction

Sadly no. Not to give much away, but the Dinobots get no dialogue aside from Grimlock doing a digitialized remake of the classic roar from Jurassic Park. Most of the time their in their Dino-modes.
On the boyfriend that's two years older than Tessa; It's called the Romeo and Juliet law. As long as their in love, the only big difference between them is that Tessa is a year below the legal age and Shane is 20. It's a weird Texas thing that should have just been left in the concept pile.
I'll leave it back at the Cons: -Weird parental issues between daughter and estranged Sam 2.0
That's a little bit horrible.
Oh no, someone having sex with someone a whole three years older than them!!!!
there has been a distinct lack of doctorhooves recently
Shh, you might summon him
Oh no, someone having sex with someone a whole three years older than them!!!!
It's more the fact that he keeps a laminated copy of the law that allows it around with him just so he can prove that it's legal for him to fuck her. Then makes a joke about her being good at handjobs. To her father.
The goofiest scene in that whole movie is when they did the slow motion and "echo" effect for Mark smashing his fist on the ground after Lockdown takes his daughter and Optimus.
It was just unnecessary
