Yeah outside of Before Midnight and Boyhood which kinda don't count cos they are Linklater films and projects he's been involved with for over a decade each he's literally got nothing notable since Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, and before that it's what, Lord of War? Which was a few years before Before The Devil Knows You're Dead as well. He's great when he's in a good film but he's gotta start picking better roles.

actually Daybreakers was decent especially considering how terrible the state of vampire films was in like 2009 and it still stands as an original take on vampires. It wasn't executed perfectly but a pretty good little film
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
9/10 totally worth seeing. Fantastic film
speaking of ethan hawke, stay away from hamlet 2k
it makes me really sad that ethan hawke does such terrible movies now
he has done some garbage but a lot of his recent career is good
this will be one to watch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regression_(film)
but seeing as how he was in Gattaca you'd think he'd be up there starring in the lot, but he's not getting good enough roles.
I Love You Philip Morris 7/10
Pretty entertaining Jim Carrey movie.
Do you honestly think that Ethan Hawke doesn't know what he's sigining on? Do you think he did The Purge or Getaway expecting a masterpiece? Don't be ridicoulous. Michael Caine once summarized that:
"I have never seen the film [Jaws: The Revenge], but by all accounts it was terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."
I never said he didn't know what he was signing up for. I just said that he does a lot of pretty bad movies. Sometimes terrible.
Nicolas Cage is a great actor that does shit too, I'm afraid Cage is more in the red than Hawk.
It's actors like Daniel Day Lewis who tread softly.
Under the Skin 4/10
Reason it's not a 1/10 is because it was well put together in terms of filming. For the rest? Utter shit, but maybe thats just me not being ~deep~ enough

what did you actually hate about it?
what did you actually hate about it?
The fact that there didn't really seemed to be a lot going on, While the slow pacing was very well done (cinematography was really good in my opionion, a bit strange but it kept you interested.) but story wise it didn't really do anything for me. Then again, maybe it's just me.

Terrible movies with a big paycheck. Despite the fact that Richard Linklater's movies are awesome, they probably don't pay very well. Big budget piles of shit like The Purge allow him to do great indie projects and still pay the bills.
Grave of the Fireflies- 9.5/10
Pretty damn good. I wasn't really understanding the hype until about 45 minutes in. The soundtrack is beautiful, the animation is incredible and the story feels extremely realistic. As it goes on, things just get worse and worse for the main characters [sp] and honestly, as it went on, it became pretty obvious that Setsuko was going to die, but in a way, that only made her death worse. [/sp]
Coming from a guy who doesn't like anime most of the time, this was a gem. I'd definitely recommend it.
Not sure why, but I can't help but feel hatred for the MC for [sp]standing up to his aunt. I mean yeah she was a bitch but still, you don't go and attempt to live on your own because of that. Especially when you don't have the mean to provide for your little sister.
Or perhaps she would've kicked them out anyway, I don't know.[/sp] Perhaps I don't know enough about traditional Japanese culture / the post-war state of Japan.
Ghost World 710
kinda pretentious in parts but overall I liked it and if you liked Daria back in the 90's so will you
[editline]11th July 2014[/editline]
also best aftercredits scene
How to train your dragon 2
Everything I expected, as good if not better than the first
9/10
toothless is still cute n shit
I haven't seen it yet but thank god people seem to be saying its good, I'd have been really disappointed if it was bad.
Also I decided to watch Frozen after all the hype, it was pretty good, its just really hard to dislike animated films. 8/10.
Also from a technical point of view I cant imagine how hard it is to animate good looking snow/ice so that kinda impressed me.
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly 8/10
I realize some people might want to crucify me for not giving this movie a 10 out of 10. I enjoyed it, albeit some parts of the movie dragged on. The fight scenes were always anticlimactic, as the enemies would always be stupid. There weren't parts of the movie where I genuinely feared for Blondie's (except the desert scene with Tuco) or Tuco's (except beating in prison camp by Angel Eyes) life.
I am glad I watched it, however, I probably won't watch it again.
Goodfellas 10/10
I guess I'm a sucker for Mafia / Crime movies. Absolutely loved this movie. It was gripping, it was brutal, it was fun. Definitely glad I watched it and I can see myself happily watching it again in the future. That scene in the back of the car when Morrie gets pithed really made me cringe, it was awful.
Has anyone got any other movie recommendations along the line of Goodfellas? I've seen The Godfather, and I really liked that. First movie was best, the others were okayish.
Check out the rest of Scorsese's work. Casino, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, The Departed are his "essentials". Also absolutely look into the first 3 films by Paul Thomas Anderson (his most famous film is There Will Be Blood, not like Goodfellas at all (well actually it is a bit, through interesting ties) but definitely one of the single best films of the 21st century do not sleep on it. PTA's first 3 films, Hard Eight, Boogie Nights and Magnolia (i've not seen hard eight but from what i can tell it's similar in style to the next 2) are fantastic, stylish ensemble pieces borrowing a lot from Scorsese. Imo Boogie Nights is better than anything Scorsese did including Goodfellas, Magnolia is a deep masterpiece as well.
I also loved Reservoir Dogs, that's a 10/10. Might rewatch it again. Pulp Fiction too.
I am going to give "A Fistful of Dollars" a watch, hopefully I enjoy it a lot more than TGTBTU
also why doesnt everyone think Godfather 2 is the best one cos it 100% is

Oh! I forgot, I watched Taxi Driver, I really liked it. I'd say it's a 9/10, maybe even a 10/10. It was really ambient, though, which I loved. The Departed is also one of my all-time favourite movies, I'm a sucker for DiCaprio. I'll give the rest of those a watch.
I'll give PTA's movies a watch too. Thanks a bunch.
Lately, I've just been getting movies and watching them on my TV. It's pretty addicting.
also why doesnt everyone think Godfather 2 is the best one cos it 100% is
I think the way The Godfather II tries to tell Michael and Vito's stories means the film ends up being a little unfocussed. It's not as well paced as the first film either, when I watched the first Godfather I barely even realised three hours had passed, but with the second I could definitely feel it drag at points.
Or maybe it's just because I find it hard to care for Michael in the second film, he becomes an absolute douchenozzle.

are u joking bro
i'm with mike on not understanding the hype goodfellas gets, it was good but not that good

The main character is just a child himself really. What's really devastating is that Grave of the Fireflies is based on a memoir. The author himself is the main character. [sp]He kills himself in his memoir even though he actually survived because he felt that's what he deserved.[/sp]
Gladiator
Yeah it was super good. I hadn't seen it since it came out so it may as well have been my first time. Everything that could be said about it already has been so whatever 11/10 it was tolerable
Am I the only person who just can't stand Gladiator? Its just so ridiculous like Braveheart that I can't watch it without cringing and laughing my ass off
saw sin city, and why didn't anyone tell me there was a noir version of hellboy in this
Am I the only person who just can't stand Gladiator? Its just so ridiculous like Braveheart that I can't watch it without cringing and laughing my ass off
What was ridiculous about it?
What was ridiculous about it?
well you know me from my previous opinions about historically based movies, or movies based on books
but yeah, its so historically cringeworthy and Hollywood bullshit that several of Scott's historical advisers gave up on it
and just like Braveheart, ignorant people who see the movie automatically associate themselves as somehow being learned scholars of the classical period
[editline]11th July 2014[/editline]
plus it gave birth to that awful meme
i liked braveheart and gladiator for what they are as movies
i could care less about the historical accuracy tbh
both 9's in my book
