well you know me from my previous opinions about historically based movies, or movies based on books
but yeah, its so historically cringeworthy and Hollywood bullshit that several of Scott's historical advisers gave up on it
and just like Braveheart, ignorant people who see the movie automatically associate themselves as somehow being learned scholars of the classical period

plus it gave birth to that awful meme
Well good thing it's a movie and not a documentary. I know that doesn't excuse it but it shouldn't hamper your enjoyment.
saw sin city, and why didn't anyone tell me there was a noir version of hellboy in this
srlsly tho

same archetype
shame i cant find any others that fit the hardboiled, shoot-first action-hero character
Marv was way cooler tho

tbh the people who think themselves as experts on history just because they saw a movie should be blamed much more than the actual movie itself
but yeah I suppose I can see why such historical inaccurate stuff can turn you off the movie. Personally though, as long as the movie itself is well made and interesting, I won't mind how far it deviates from history (most of the time).
Marv was way cooler tho
you what
you what
Hello
[editline]12th July 2014[/editline]
But really, it's probably because I adore Sin City rather than hell boy actually being worse than marv
also why doesnt everyone think Godfather 2 is the best one cos it 100% is
If you're talking about any and all scenes featuring De Niro as Young Vito and forgetting about the trainwreck of Michael Corleone, then yes, you are very much correct.
A couple of days ago, I went on with an Epic Movie marathon. Sorry, Polly, in advance.
Braveheart
5/5
Gladiator
4/5
The Last Samurai
4/5
I don't have a whole lot to say about them other than I rather like them.
Check out the rest of Scorsese's work. Casino, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, The Departed are his "essentials". Also absolutely look into the first 3 films by Paul Thomas Anderson (his most famous film is There Will Be Blood, not like Goodfellas at all (well actually it is a bit, through interesting ties) but definitely one of the single best films of the 21st century do not sleep on it. PTA's first 3 films, Hard Eight, Boogie Nights and Magnolia (i've not seen hard eight but from what i can tell it's similar in style to the next 2) are fantastic, stylish ensemble pieces borrowing a lot from Scorsese. Imo Boogie Nights is better than anything Scorsese did including Goodfellas, Magnolia is a deep masterpiece as well.
Hard Eight reminds me a little bit of Tarantino and Scorsese mixed together. I feel some Jackie Brown influences from his first film.
But yeah Hard Eight is easily his weakest film and the most uninspired one. But still enjoyable to watch.
Edit: Oops I realized Jackie Brown came out just a year after Hard Eight. Weird that it reminded me of it a little bit.
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly 8/10
I realize some people might want to crucify me for not giving this movie a 10 out of 10. I enjoyed it, albeit some parts of the movie dragged on. The fight scenes were always anticlimactic, as the enemies would always be stupid. There weren't parts of the movie where I genuinely feared for Blondie's (except the desert scene with Tuco) or Tuco's (except beating in prison camp by Angel Eyes) life.
I am glad I watched it, however, I probably won't watch it again.
Goodfellas 10/10
I guess I'm a sucker for Mafia / Crime movies. Absolutely loved this movie. It was gripping, it was brutal, it was fun. Definitely glad I watched it and I can see myself happily watching it again in the future. That scene in the back of the car when Morrie gets pithed really made me cringe, it was awful.
Has anyone got any other movie recommendations along the line of Goodfellas? I've seen The Godfather, and I really liked that. First movie was best, the others were okayish.
these scores are the wrong way around sorry
also why doesnt everyone think Godfather 2 is the best one cos it 100% is
Ofc Godfather 2 is best, but the first will always be more personally memorable for me and I'm more likely to chuck that one on.
The second one is probably the most successful sequel ever by enhancing the first movie to that degree.
[editline]12th July 2014[/editline]
I think the way The Godfather II tries to tell Michael and Vito's stories means the film ends up being a little unfocussed. It's not as well paced as the first film either, when I watched the first Godfather I barely even realised three hours had passed, but with the second I could definitely feel it drag at points.
Or maybe it's just because I find it hard to care for Michael in the second film, he becomes an absolute douchenozzle.
yes, the second film is bitter as fuck, the first is far more family oriented.
also I agree with the pacing but really it being a sequel and prequel is just amazing to watch tbh.
There is a Godfather Saga cut with segues everything together but I've never bothered.
Am I the only person who just can't stand Gladiator? Its just so ridiculous like Braveheart that I can't watch it without cringing and laughing my ass off
As a movie Braveheart is good but being Scottish yeah I just cannot take it seriously cos it is so ridiculously inaccurate but I don't know shit about the.history surrounding Gladiator so I can just watch that and see it as great great movie. I never expect films to be a realistic depiction of events anyway cos they always senationalise or bend the truth or even just lie
I recently watched Sin City and I would honestly rate it a 10/10
I don't know whether it inspired me as a wannabe comic artist or just the tone and setting where so great but I just loved every minute.
The first time the credits played 40 minutes in I was really disappointing as I was really getting into it then the next story started and I've never been so happy.
I cannot wait for the sequel to come out
Sin City is legit my favorite movie of all time.

Not like I watched Braveheart or Gladiator for a serious historical discussion. I think they're far more character oriented than being historically relevant.

lol, you're that guy who posts in the Rome Total War thread and calls users idiots for not using historically accurate tactics, and scoffing at them when they don't know which units would be best to counter a certain type of enemy. Not surprised this personality trait of yours comes over to movie reviews as well.
Just about to watch A Fistful of Dollars!

I dunno, I enjoyed TGTBTU but not as much as I enjoyed Goodfellas.
been meaning to see that Hunter film with Dafoe, supposed to be good yet noone's seen it.
oooh it's great. I loved it
I wasn't really interested in Godfather part 2, I only remember the fishing scene and something and Cuba but that's about it. I love the first Godfather though and remember more of that than part 2, in fact I might watch The Godfather today.
TGTBTU should be rated a clear 10, a eight is too low. If you don't understand, watch it again. Every Sergio Leone western is a true masterpiece, personally TGTBTU and A Fistful of Dynamite are my favs. Originally I thought A Fistful of Dynamite was gonna be some western comedy. But when I started watching it, halfway it just changed into something different. A beautiful masterpiece about the revolution and how dark it was.
I posted this before, so I am gonna post it again to prove my point.

how can you think its anything under a 9 forreal
Gotta watch Once Upon A Time In The West. I've heard people say it's Leone's best film. Got it sitting in my room in a cool as hell case. I've seen the opening scene, I remember studying it in my media studies class. It's so great.

I originally thought it was okay. But liked I explain, if you watch a Leone movie one more time and just keep your thought to the movie, the scenery, the story. Then you'll see it as a great film.

Once Upon a Time in the West feels pretty different from Leone's other westerns, it's got a much slower, more deliberate pace and is more subdued in comparison to the extravagant theatrics that characterises the Dollars trilogy and the characters in it.
It's definitely a great film though, probably my second or third favourite Leone film, I can't decide wether I like it or For a Few Dollars More more.
I honestly don't understand why I get trashed for this, when its my opinion. People ask why I don't like them and I explain it every time but I always get dumbed down for it. Source inaccuracy when I'm very familiar with the source is just one of those things that gets me and oftentimes makes a movie hard to watch for me. I'll sometimes try to tune shit out but when its so fucking bad (see Ironclad) I just have to turn off the movie because of how insulting it is.
Everyone has something that makes them tick and this is mine's

That's fair enough, but you come across as conceited and self-important.
The Grand Budapest Hotel 10/10
I'm glad the other user posted saying he was smiling throughout the entire film. I can definitely see why. Ralph Fiennes is a fucking incredible actor, and his personality in this film was really humorous. I'm happy that I finally got around to watching it. Been putting it off for ages because I thought it'd be like that shitty The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Maggie Smith in it. I dunno why I kept thinking it'd be like that.
This is a movie I could happily watch again. I was also pleasantly surprised by the really wide range of well-known actors it had.
I understand what you mean, it's a legit reason, but for me it's about the characters so so long as they make it believable and effective within the world of the film (there's no such thing as the real world in film, be it fiction or documentary) I don't mind which is why I can enjoy Gladiator. I know it's not accurate but the characters are brilliant and amazingly portrayed, and it's one of Scott's best efforts as a director and he excels in most aspects of the film. It wasn't trying to be a retelling of history, it was trying to be a moving piece of cinema which it was (not that that means your complaint isn't legitimate)
[editline]12th July 2014[/editline]
Same goes for Braveheart, film sucks as a historical film but it's a good movie.

Watched Begin Again 2 days ago (yes, that movie with adam levine)
can't help but be charmed by it. definitely has its flaws, but i was so captivated that it didn't really matter. keira was phenomenal and adam levine stood his ground pretty well i guess. mark ruffalo playing as mark ruffalo.
quintessential date movie, or if you want something really light and uplifting. the soundtrack is reaaally good too.
8.5/10 !!!
The Cabin in the Woods
4/5
I needed a laugh. As far as a deconstruction of horror movie tropes go, this is brilliant.
Dawn of the planet of the apes
8/10
One of my favorite movies starring monkeys right up there with Dunston Checks In

How to Die in Oregon is a documentary that follows a couple of people who want a physician-assisted suicide for various reasons. The opening scene alone shows you how moving and intense this documentary is going to be. I would highly recommend this Documentary. It is on Netflix, for those who want to watch it. I am warning you though that it is pretty intense and very depressing!
