Kingdom of Heaven
5/5
My favorite Ridley Scott film after Blade Runner and Alien.
imo the director's cut was really good but not 5/5 material.
the original theatrical version was pretty average.

If you want aged Mifune, watch the great miniseries/movie Shogun (though watch the miniseries cause it's the whole story whereas the movie cuts most of it). God I can't wait for the blu-ray release, the cover of the bluray itself excites me, god I love Shogun so much I just realized how really good it is and it's been a while since I watched it. Also do not watch Shogun with subtitles, it spoils it deeply.

Has anyone ever seen Westworld?
My mom brought it up when we were watching Iron Man 3, where Tony Stark makes a quip about that one douchey bald dude while trapped underneath the water tower.

I love that movie. It's a very exciting 'sci-fi' thriller, anyone interested in the genre can't miss it.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 8/10

I've watched several movies in the past few days, so let's get into it.
You're Next - 7/10
Tried to watch it a few weeks ago but stopped maybe 20 minutes in. I decided to give it another chance, and I'm glad I did. It was a really fun watch. Though there are trope-y moments they're always fun, and a couple of story elements subvert your expectations and make the movie much more interesting.
Sin City - 7/10
Watched it after the recent talk in this thread. Though I did like the style and though it was pulled off really well, and though every individual story was well-formed despite their conciseness, I did regret that the stories weren't more developed. I did really enjoy it and was never bored, but I feel like I would have enjoyed each story more if there was more substance to each individual one. But I can understand why each story had to be succinct.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - 6/10
Don't really know what to say about this one. Amazing visuals, and almost every scene was fun to watch, but it just all felt so aimless. I guess that's sort of the point of the film, aimlessness and outlandish behavior, but behind the visuals it kind of felt like a void. Wasn't a huge fan, but it gets points for the astounding visuals and being an entertaining watch. Maybe this is a film I'll be able to appreciate more when I watch it again.
I also watched The Big Lebowski but honestly I have no idea what to make of that movie. That's definitely a film that I'll have to watch again. I feel like someone is going to be upset at me about one of these ratings.
Robocop 2 - 3/10
Really boring and crappy sequel. Unsure about #3 but I don't think I'll watch that any time soon.
I'll never understand why some people like Robocop 2.
The entire movie is aimless; it doesn't really get an actual plot until around 2/3 of the way in. They do a complete reversal of Murphy's character arc from the first movie, essentially resetting him to step 1. Every time I try to watch it, it just feels like a slog that I'm forcing myself to trudge through.

I was completely unaware people actually liked it. I've just heard nothing but bad things about it.
It's not the worst film out there, but it's certainly got lots of stupid moments.
mike stoklasa like it for some reason
mike stoklasa like it for some reason
Probably because he has no taste.
Robocop 2 is a decent movie. Nowhere as good as the first one, but still not a bad movie. It's fun to watch.
And it's nowhere near as bad as the third one.
Yeah I liked Robocop 2, but Robocop 3 and 2014 can suck my ass though.

Nice try, Mike.

Btw. guys - looks like The Hateful Eight will start shooting next year - http://thefilmstage.com/news/quentin-tarantinos-the-hateful-eight-to-shoot-early-next-year-according-to-kurt-russell/
Nice to know Quentin didn't just throw it out like he was going to.

I think that live reading really helped, but I wish he kept the original ending where [sp]everybody dies.[/sp]
buncha loose monkeys 2 - 8/10
this was a very well-made sequel, i look forward to the next one which i suppose will lead to the inevitable ending from the original.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (or Buncha Loose Monkeys as Pops calls it)
I always liked Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the concept of rebooting the PotA franchise in general. The original movies, although they are hallmarks of cinema, have aged very poorly, and the sequels were unnecessary. It is plainly obvious to anyone that the film deserved to be updated and made less campy.
Thankfully, they have gotten good treatment in this most recent reboot. Not only does DotPotA succeed in being a good reboot, it is also a good sequel to RotPotA, and it is a fantastic movie in and of itself.
It is very much focused on Caesar and his band of monkeys. Most of the drama and weight is on him and his fellow apes. The humans make decent characters, but they are only in there for setup. The apes got the most screentime, and it is all about their progression as characters and how they show us what being human is, despite not being human. It is easier to digest our species' characteristics and traits when we observe them in other species, and that is what this film does well.
The chemistry and character of the titular CGI apes is surprisingly good. Their scenes are very emotional and you can tell so much just by looking at their faces and body language. The CGI team did and excellent job, and this movie would have suffered without them. All-around, the performances from both the real and not so real actors and actresses were excellent. The writing was solid, cinematography was also very good, and the direction was good as well.
All-in-all, DotPotA was a very good movie, and I had a hard time thinking of anything I disliked. I think my only criticism is that the humans didn't get much characterization and what little characterization they were given was kind of forced.
TL;DR - 9/10
The Man from Nowhere
(Man, I've been watching a lot of Eastern movies lately)
5/5
One of the best films I've ever seen. There was plenty of action to keep me satisfied, the story was great, and I was hooked the whole way through the movie.
I think that live reading really helped, but I wish he kept the original ending where [sp]everybody dies.[/sp]
But [sp]that's how most of his movies end (Maybe not everyone dies, but most do)[/sp]
Damned Dirty Apes 2
They portrayed the apes and humans rather well with each other, their own flaws and stuff like that.
Gary Oldman's character could have been better though. The story shows each side surviving. The change in atmosphere from the first to the second shows but a little of it is still there with the apes.
Caesar and the other veterans were cool. The orangutan was badass. I would give this a 9/10
The Hunter - 5.5/10. Can't say I enjoyed it all that much. There was pretty solid acting but I felt as if there was hardly anything going on. The climax was fairly powerful but the buildup wasn't really that great so it didn't have as much impact as it could have. Visually it definitely looked good. Overall it's predictable though, I was dozing off a little throughout. Dafoe is great as always and I give him credit for that but I honestly would reccomended watching something else, unless you'd like to see a few beautiful shots of Tasmania.
The Raid 2: Berandal
If you liked the first movie and haven't seen the sequel, watch it. It improves on everything the first movie did right. Most of the fight scenes were better than the best fight from the first one. It also has a better plot. The movie is 2h30 minutes long but it didn't seem to drag out to me.
The Last Stand - 4/10
Very dull movie. would not watch again.

they're MEANT to be dumb nitpicking, if you don't realize that then you're the one missing the point
just saw Kill List
pretty neat. I think that's the first time I've heard someone use the word "gaff" meaning their house unironically
