films I saw yesterday in the order I watched them in; No Country for Old Men (rewatched) still really flipping good. its quality has, unsurprisingly, not changed since the last time i saw it. so no worries there lads Ghost in the Shell Pretty good. For some reason I built it up in my head a lot to the point where I thought it was gonna be way more philosophical than it was, but it was still a pretty enjoyable film. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Flippin good as heck, although it was a bit anticlimactic imo. also [sp]I thought it was a bit odd when Guillam was using pretty obvious spy techniques to get his bag into the archives in the middle of the circus, flippen spy central. how did no one see what he was doing[/sp] but yeah I really liked it. [editline]17th July 2014[/editline] now I'm gonna go watch Contact and probably a few other movies. see y'all later
Enemy - 7/10 A lot of subtle symbols throughout the movie that relate to the ending. I did not get it fully until a second see through. Then again I did not get 2001: A Space Odyssey until the second watch, even then it can be interpreted different by anyone else.

saving private ryan - 9/10 it mightve been 10/10, but i dont have much experience with war movies
Contact Pretty heavy handed with its message, but the fact that it was still a pretty decent story saved it. The last half-hour or so was a bit ehhh but it didn't detract from the rest of the film, in my opinion. I liked it a lot.
contact was great, even if on the surface it's in your face a little bit and try hard I think it's one of the rare sci fi movies with a strong spiritual backbone. First time I saw it, it moved me to pieces. A.I. is another one, but didn't get it on first watch. [editline]17th July 2014[/editline] if only sagan wrote more books like that :[
planet of the apes (1968) - 8/10 considering how iconic this film is its a marvel that i hadn't caught it before. interesting and thought provoking from start to finish with multiple themes explored: animal mistreatment, racial division, science vs religion etc. it has aged well in my opinion; campy as fuck but the aesthetics of the ape civilization make up for it, along with this dashes of light humor keep the film from taking itself too seriously. editing and camera work is top notch, i absolutely love the use of fast zooms into objects/people of interest. acting, characters and script is great - highlights are the famous "damned dirty apes line" at the culmination of a fun and extended chase sequence, and of course the ending of the film which despite being spoiled for me a long time ago, gained much more significance after watching the rest of the film. if you haven't seen this check it out, its pretty much essential viewing.
I thought they were very obvious.
You'd be surprised how people didn't notice the cracks in the windshield not looking like a spiderweb. Or how the tram rails didn't look like them either, or the beginning of the movie where he is at an 'auction' of some sort, and the lady steps on the spider Some people didn't catch that stuff, and were surprised by the end of the movie. They were also freaked out.

He was liked by everyone, would it do anyone harm to help him and give him the bag for a moment?[/sp] But in all seriousness, it's a recurring theme in Le Carre's novels, showing how fucking sloppy and careless was MI5 and MI6, how stupid mistakes they made through the Cold War. I think that's why I love his books so much, this harsh and bitter reality. [editline]17th July 2014[/editline]
Some people didn't catch that stuff, and were surprised by the end of the movie.
theres a screening of locke in my city should i give it a go?
It's very slow and barely anything happens. If you don't mind that, go for it.
Rise of the Dawn of the Apes: 8/10. -1 for the head human guy. He was boring. Very monotone and didnt do a lot. -1 for the story being a little different than i thought it was going to lay out. Not saying its bad but a little disappointed.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole - 6/10 rewatched this the other night in a Mexican hotel because it was late and there were like three channels in English It's an all right adventure movie. The animation is fantastic and the direction is pretty good (although the Snyder-Slo-Mo™ gets a bit old). I've seen the movie before and read the books as a kid, so I had a good handle on the story. However, what with the compressed storyline and the very little exposition I imagine the lore could be absolutely impenetrable to a less interested viewer. It's good but not great. [editline]17th July 2014[/editline] also that is one heck of a title
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: 8/10 Really really good second entry into the (expected) trilogy. So glad that the film was majority about the apes, in particular Caesar. If it was about the humans again, I would've been crazy bored, but it's not! The film sorta stagnates around the middle bit, but you don't really notice it because the apes are fun to watch. Didn't do anything groundbreaking though, in terms of plot, but was really fun to watch.
contact - 9/10
Damn. I need to rewatch Contact and A.I. Incredible movies.
A.I. gets a lot of imo undeserved hate/scorn for being a "poor emulation of Kubrick sci-fi" or whatever. I didn't like the movie much at first but now, I think it's neat.
Calvary Holy fuck. I didn't expect it to be so cynical and sad. One of the best films I saw this year.
A.I. gets a lot of imo undeserved hate/scorn for being a "poor emulation of Kubrick sci-fi" or whatever. I didn't like the movie much at first but now, I think it's neat.
...but Kubrick was involved in the production?? He would have directed it if he hadn't died
Raging Bull: 87% Imo this is the best movie that DeNiro has ever done. His acting was brilliant and so was Pescis's.I just can't believe i didn't watched this movie before. It should've gotten an oscar for best picture.
i always liked ai ever since i saw it when i was a kid but was under the impression that most people hated it
AI freaked me out as a kid and I haven't seen it since.
AI freaked me out as a kid and I haven't seen it since.
watch it again, it's still freaky but so good once you get it. :] The first half is probably what puts people off tbh.
The ending is also shit
Nah, the last 30 mins made me realise how good it actually was. But yeah, this was on the third viewing.. Before that I thought it was faceless and void of anything real. Then you look at the damn title and wait a minute, how did you manage to get me empathising with an artificial human. That made no sense and forever I'll be confused. I got a lot more Kubrick vibes with how it ended than the rest of the film.
You really think Kubrick would have ended with the happy, bittersweet ending? That was straight Spielberg, man. Kubrick would have left him in the ocean.
You really think Kubrick would have ended with the happy, bittersweet ending? That was straight Spielberg, man. Kubrick would have left him in the ocean.
Pretty sure the ending was Kubrick's idea.
I still think Kubrick ended on a high note with Eyes Wide Shut. I know it's not his most well-received film, but to me, it's one of his best. I'd put on the same tier as A Clockwork Orange.
I think Eyes Wide Shut would be considered his masterpiece if not two "ifs": he died before finishing editing (and if you're familar with his filmography you can see, you can feel that's something's off), and second one - this is an ultimate proof that real life marriages not necessarily translate well on screen. That was a nice experiment on part of Kubrick but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be satisfied with its results.
Pretty sure the ending was Kubrick's idea.
obviously getting senile with age, i absolutely hate the ending. I think it removes all emotional impact. Kubricks masterpiece is obviously 2001, though.
I don't think EWS is that good, personally. Kubricks masterpiece is obviously 2001, though.
Kubrick had too many excellent films, and that's why EWS may seem pale in comparision to others. I'd say 2001 is his magnum opus, but his best, absolutely flawless film? Paths of Glory.
You really think Kubrick would have ended with the happy, bittersweet ending? That was straight Spielberg, man. Kubrick would have left him in the ocean.
watch more Kubrick tbh, he's the type of guy who'd fiddle with your emotions in weird ways. Clockwork Orange made you empathise with a psychopath and not many films do that well.
