I don't give a shit about marvel movies, but Guardians was really fun.
it's more GDT than the first, that's for sure.
watching the movie not knowing shit about the comics made it seem a little odd but fuck me did it have some beautiful visuals, and the first one was awesome enough to attract comic and non-comic fans
i want hellboy 3 and have been wanting it since 2006
I prefer Hellboy the first one over the second one, but that's mainly because it follows the comics more closely.
See, the comics differ from the movies in two main ways. First off, the comics are more rural. Hellboy's more likely to go out in the countryside to track down a goblin than he is to fight a monster in downtown. Mignola really loves old legends and folktales, and he implements all these different cultural tales in his stories.
The other big difference is that the existence of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. are common knowledge. One of the funny things about the comics is that nobody reacts to Hellboy's appearance - there's never an "oh my goodness, that fellow is large and red and has a giant stone hand" it's just "oh hello Hellboy". As such, the whole "where do I fit in with humanity" idea is very much downplayed - Hellboy doesn't like to know about his lineage (half-human half-demon, incidentally) but there's never a conflict with society or other characters.
I just prefer the more straightforward Hellboy than the sequel. However, I did really appreciate all the effort and passion Del Toro put into The Golden Army. The man loves his monsters, and you can tell he just went all-out creating the fantastic (practical effects) worlds and creatures like the troll market or the plant creature.
Also Hellboy has a fantastic soundtrack
Blade Runner
Absolutely nothing like I expected. I was assuming it was an action movie in an interesting setting. What it actually was was a lot more thematic and unnerving. I really liked the atmosphere of it (which is what everyone talks about when there's discussion about it) and I can definitely see how it pioneered what we see in modern cyberpunk, but I don't think we got to see enough of it. I thought the movie in general was very oddly paced. I much rather watch scenes like [sp]Deckard chasing the replicant through the rainy streets of grungy future LA[/sp] than him staring at a picture on a TV for 6 minutes, or the climax that was actually very very slow, taking up 20 minutes of [sp]Deckard and Roy running around Sebastian's building without anything actually happening until they made it to the roof, where the excellent "tears in rain" speech happened.[/sp] I also felt like the theme of Blade Runner about human nature wasn't as explored as much as it could have been. And lastly, I honestly don't think the characters were that interesting, except for Roy, who was brilliant and should have been in the film more.

I'm probably gonna get buttdestroyed for saying this
Yeah was blade runner perfect?
No.
Was it a damn good movie though, and better than most?
Absolutely.
It's not a superhero movie at all, the only powers people have are "can use knives well", "can build big guns" and "is a tree"
aside from "MARVEL STUDIOS" at the beginning, a few easter eggs, Thanos (for one and a half scenes) and the Collector there is virtually no connection between it and the other Marvel movies
the main characters are all varying degrees of selfish jackasses in (well-deserved) trouble with the law and half of them have no direct quarrel with the villain, they just want the macguffin
but what if his mother was natalie portman and he is actually the son of thor ???

Dude that entire final sequence is absolutely A+ cinema wtf

Also, which version did you watch? It's a film known for having a lot of different cuts. Director's cut is probably the best.

I'm totally with you, it's so uplifting and great to hear people narrating drunkenly:

That's because you watched the inferior version.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Okay, I'll bite. It was fun. Enjoyable, emotional at times, hilariously funny at others. Main issues? A bit too much and obvious explanations all over ("This is Nebula and Gomora, there are sisters, daughters of Thanos, the big bad bully that teams up with Ronan that wants to destroy everything"), but that is understandable seeing how big universe they've opened. I think with the world already established, the next movie can be even better.
But bigger flaw? Shit villains. Face it, Marvel in their movies had two interesting villains, and one was killed, the other is milked for three movies straight. But what hurts more, they've had potential, through the actors playing them. Both Lee Pace and Karen Gillian are amazing, but they were just shoehorned to be typical antagonists with no motivations whatsoever. He's evil just because, and you have to believe it because we tell you that, and she hates her father because stuff. They're basically irrelevant.
If DC did anything right with their films, it's definitely the villains, that were both memorable and actually fleshed out.
Except Talia al Ghul in TDKR. Fuck everything about her. I refuse to acknowledge her being in that film.
1 Night In Paris 3 / 10
Awful camera work, literally no plot whatsoever, shoddy lighting and crappy dialogue.

i thought everyone agreed that the final cut was the definitive and best cut ??
I don't actually know the differences, I thought it was just the final scene but apparently a lot of it was tweaked.
Definitely checking out the theatrical some time.

you're giving dc too much credit. it's not fair to say compare the current marvel movies to the dozens of dc movies released before them- or rather, it's not fair to give dc credit for "making good villains" when the only reason they have more of those is because they've had more chances to do so
and why is using loki for three movies "milking him"? i'll admit he was kinda shoehorned in thor 2 but why bother mentioning the other two films he's in, their usage of him was just fine in them
i thought everyone agreed that the final cut was the definitive and best cut ??
I can't remember the differences or if ive seen the final cut but I think the director's is the one I have on dvd lol what's better about the final cut?
Its literally the uncut movie just as Ridley Scott wanted and had full artistic reign over it, with higher quality footage and better sound

Read this I guess

The world's end 8/10 well that ending was unexpected
Just watched Transformers 4 because I felt like going to the cinema and Guardians of the Galaxy is not out until next month.
-2/10 Holy motherfucking fuck was that cringe worthy levels of bad. I expected stupid fun, but got offensively bad jokes, the most hateable characters possible and a far too long movie.
Surely you had better options. That's like choosing between eating cake and being waterboarded.
Dawn of the Apes - 9/10
Finally, a great movie that topped Cap 2 as best summer movie. I have yet to see GotG, but personally I think Dawn is now my favorite movie of 2014. Andy Serkis should receive a Oscar for his performance, he was absolutely outstanding as Caesar.
My next movies will be GotG and then...TMNT (my friend is forcing me to see this, don't ask questions).
Surely you had better options. That's like choosing between eating cake and being waterboarded.
I forget what movie it was, but someone put something on that was so awful that me and my friends literally went out back and waterboarded ourselves.
Persepolis
(again)
9/10
guardians of the galaxy
8/10
good fun summer film, went into it not knowing anything about it and really enjoyed it. will probably watch again when i'm not fighting tooth and nail for the first 30 minutes to save seats for my friends who were late
The Grand Budapest Hotel - 9/10
Really loved this movie from start to finish, the only flaw I saw in it was the slow beginning to the film.

I'm pretty sure it was the final cut, it didn't have the piss poor narration and included the weird unicorn scene.
guardians of the galaxy 9/10 this shit fucking godo you fucking see it nigger or ill fukcing blow your brains out see
Also Dawn of the Planet of the Ape of the - 8/10
I liked the first one better, but this one was still pretty great. The apes all had some character to them, which is better than I can say for the human characters. I'm a bit bummed that there wasn't any "OOOOHHHHHHHH" moment in this one, like when [sp]Caesar says "NOOO" for the first time then ultra-slaps the guy in Rise,[/sp] but Caesar still sounds awesome every time he talks in this one.
rewatched the avengers. still a great film, although it's kinda funny seeing some of the cgi looking outdated despite it only being released a couple years ago :v:
also, after seeing guardians of the galaxy, the chitauri and everything like that has the effect of making it seem totally believable that all this would be happening in the same universe. when i was watching GotG, it felt like it was far too different to make sense being part of the wider marvel universe, but the chitauri kind of bridge the gap imo. so yeah, it totally works
[editline]3rd August 2014[/editline]
also after typing that out it would probably make more sense in the marvel universe thread but eh
Guardians of the Galaxy - 9/10
Only significant complaint was that the team came together a little too quickly but hot damn was that film a lot of fun.

It's not about the quality, but if we take 1 Marvel film to 1 DC film, the latter one can have up to 3 good villains (without it being too much), to Marvel's zero, let's just focus on the last 10 years, you have 7 DC films but let's just exclude Watchmen, cause it will be unfair. Even in the shitty Man of Steel, or even shittier Green Lantern you have villains with proper backstory, proper motivation, giving them some sense of realism in the terms of character's creation. Marvel prefers to take time in their films to focus more on the protagonists, and that would be fine, if they wouldn't forget about the antagonists. I don't even remember the villains in Hulk, Iron Man 2, or Thor (beside Loki that was a half-villain there), and give me a month and the same will be with GotG. And maybe that proves the strength of the last one - it can work basically without villains, based only on the interactions between main characters.
Loki was good in Thor and The Avengers, and that should be the end of it for at least 5-6 years. He was unnecessary in Thor 2, and I can assure that we will see him in the next few films.
