i watched death proof and planet terror on ifc a while back without knowing anything about them. it was so painfully obvious which one was tarentino's movie (which was miles better even though it was nothing special at all)
they might be similar in some ways but rodriguez is pretty much inferior i think. i don't really need to see people getting their testicles ripped out and having nothing to show for it. i mean it's just a movie but it was honestly fucking disgusting to watch, i turned it off pretty quickly
i agree his style can be a bit too much, such as when machete [sp]rips out that guys spine in the first movie then uses it to propel down the side of the building[/sp]
but its that over the top violence with little to no warning that i find interesting about his style
i can't see not finishing the movie because of it though; thats pretty dumb
i wont say that hes better than tarantino, or even on the same level, but he'll always be one of my favorites regardless of what the objective opinion is
"from dusk till dawn" is a good example of them working together; you should watch that if you havent
on another subject, what does thread think of kill bill?
ive got a movie buff who refuses to watch it for whatever reason
i really don't mind gore at all but rodriguez can be fucking weird in a bad way
my problem is that he's even more over-the-top than tarentino but with zero intelligence, they're like shitty video games. thought they'd be at least fun to watch but maybe i should read up more on stuff before i see them. i've heard good things about some of his older stuff, maybe those two movies left a bad taste in my mouth
it is what it is mang
some people like it and some people dont
thats the subjective nature of movies
now what about that kill bill
honestly dont know why he wont give it a shot when he likes tarantino already
i don't think kill bill is a must see, but if he likes tarentino he'll definitely enjoy it. it was pretty good but it's def not up there with reservoir dogs, inglorious basterds, etc
Nah, Kill Bill Vol 1 owns bones. Vol 2 on the other hand is more reflective, but, excluding the confrontation with Bill, is not as good.
Naked Lunch (1991)
Great.
This is the third Cronenberg movie I've seen this week, and the further I go, the better it gets. Is there anything of his I should watch next? What should I stay away from?
Definitely check out Eastern Promises and A History of Violence next.

The Dead Zone is pretty good too. It's an adaptation of Stephen King's book of the same name and it has the Walken in it.
The Battered Bastards of Baseball - 7.5/10
Just a overall cool watch about Kurt Russel and his dad and their involvement in the baseball world.
imo no one is comparable to Quentin Tarentino. his movies are very unique
Unique is not the word I'd use when talking about the guy who copies entire scenes and plotpoints from earlier or eastern films. He's a competent filmmaker who knows exactly what he wants to create, but there's nothing unique about him.
unique as in no one in the current film industry has his style
i think thats what he meant
whether he took inspiration from decades old movies is another matter i think
The Ugly Truth 8/10
Gotta love a bit of Crude humor
just saw Perfect Blue
great film. would totally recommend checking out even if you are in the "lol anime is for gay nerds!!" camp
because this is kind of like a general talk thread;
i've been watching alias, because it's trash and funny to riff, and this scene happened

i'd like to point out that quentin starred in (and most likely wrote/influenced a lot) two whole episodes of alias prior to this...
i think quentin it's possible that quentin was just that huge a fan of alias
Kill Bill, IMO, is better to see in a whole sitting.
just saw Taxi Driver
pretty neat, but didn't live up to my expectations because of the insane hype around it

that's not saying anything, were you expecting a different kind of film?
It's the best Scorsese film by miles how can't you love it

Is probably what he's talking about actually lmao but still it's great what did you not like
maybe what he was actually watching was this:

wow, that is a terrible poster
Queen Latifah's such a ghetto name.

Lol, Teen Laqueefa
Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut
Worth of Jerusalem according to Saladin / 10
i felt let down by taxi driver, too, tbh
i liked it and everything, but i couldnt honestly give it more than a 9/10
and even then, i feel its more of an 8/10 movie
i never knew gangs of new york was scorsese
watch that asap
its amazing in every way
that's not saying anything, were you expecting a different kind of film?
I wasn't really, it was pretty much how I thought it was gonna be in terms of story and style, but considering how more or less everyone says it's an amazing brilliant fantastic 10/10 film, I was expecting there to be something surprising in there that set it apart from other films
and then there wasn't. so while I'll straight up say that I think it's a very, very good film, it wasn't mindblowing or anything

fair enough, when I see a film like that I see how it sets itself aside from everything pre-dating it and you see that in Scorsese's movies.
Was there ever a movie that moved like Goodfellas before Goodfellas? That being said, I still wouldn't put Scorse on my top 5 directors.
[editline]22nd August 2014[/editline]
and I also don't think Taxi Driver is his best.
[sp]Raging Bull[/sp]
but this is arguable and not everyone will get me. :)
reason i felt let down by taxi driver but still gave it an 8/10 was because everyone was hyping it up as a masterpiece
i really wish i could be like you guys and give it a 10/10, but i just dont see what you guys see :(
also, who wouldnt put scorsese in the top 5?
You wanna unpopular opinion about Scorsese's best film? The Last Temptation of Jesus Christ was his best. On par with Raging Bull, but still.
I think Goodfellas is my favorite Scorsese film, but I haven't seen Gangs of New York yet.
Taxi Driver is a fucking masterpiece. 10/10 film.
Goodfellas would probably be my personal favorite but honestly, it's just a personal preference.
Try watching The King of Comedy. I think Scorsese said that it has his favorite De Niro performance in it...and that's saying something.

I also think that Last Temptation is definitely one of his best and on par with Raging Bull. It's a fantastic movie.

"unpopular" no, I don't think anyone dislikes Passion. It's a really great film & tight soundtrack. I love the music so much in that it's ridiculous.

But even among people who liked it, it's a rare thing to consider it his best.
