Did anyone see 42? Really wanna go see it. Huge baseball fanatic and love a good story.
I saw 42 last week. I thought it was really good. Acting was top notch, Harrison Ford was great. You also get to see Wash from Firefly say the N word about 80 times in 3 minutes.
Oblivion - 9/10
I was pleasantly surprised with the plot, and blown away by the soundtrack and beautiful visuals.
Oblivion 9/10 - Excellent film, Great twist to it as well, was not expecting that at all.
Badlands
A topical movie considering what has happened in Boston now, it is based on the Starkweather-Fugate killing spree in 1958. Very tense and the narration did serve a great purpose. Martin Sheen performed well. I think this movie should be more recognized, it seems it's pretty unknown for most people. I recommend it.
7/10
Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney)
Eh I guess it had some entertainment value, checked it out merely out of curiosity of how the source material was handled. Definitely a movie for the fans, as the characters are introduced and handled quite poorly in my opinion. Even then, Maya and Edgeworth especially, are poorly acted (relatively to the rest of the cast) and not exactly true to their game counterparts. It takes over two hours to rush through three cases from the game, and what sort of made sense in the context of the game is painfully debunked as loony in the context of a live-action movie.
The movie follows the game closely, but it doesn't really work in it's transition from cartoon style game to live-action film. But I still respect the attempt.
5/10
Escape from Alcatraz - 9/10
Staring Clint Eastwood, very good movie about the prison, and how three guys escaped from it. I actually went down to San Francisco last week, to see the actual prison, and it looked amazing!
Never Let Me Go
Depressing as all hell but also beautifully shot and acted.
Star Trek: Nemesis - 7.5/10
The Royal Tenenbaums 8.5/10
I too saw Oblivion. Again, I hate giving numbers to things, but it's probably the first great film I've seen from this year so far. I'm a bit disappointed to see it get lukewarm reviews so far.
I keep hearing that it borrows bits and pieces from a lot of different sci-fi movies. [SP]I will say that the whole clone thing reminds me of Moon. And I guess the Tet and it's destruction is kind of like the Death Star.[/SP] I can't think of much else right now off the top of my head, though. I still enjoyed it as a whole, however.
Day of the Dead 2008 remake 1/10
There is only one term I can use to properly describe this, namely 'fucking awful'.
The editing is annoying at times, the camerawork looks like it was done by someone who's drunk, the special effects range from merely sucky to downright laughable and the characters, with the exception of the black guy whose levels of genre awareness reach new levels for a zombie movie, have the brains of a potato.
It even has a character turn into a zombie without attacking his friends. Why is this? Well, one of the characters comes up with the theory that it's because he was a vegetarian when he was alive. That's right, vegetarian zombies. You have got to be fucking shitting me.
Remakes tend to get too much shit but DotD makes the world's best argument against them. It's an ungodly bad piece of shit that never should've been made. The only upside is that Alone in the Dark now has a friend. Up until now, AotD was the only movie I genuinely consider to have wasted my time on and I hope DotD is proud to join it.
Ouch, I feel sorry you saw that thing. Maybe you should rewatch the original Day of the Dead to wash the memories out of your brain?

I still get nightmares when visualizing[sp]the death of that guy who gets vocal chords damaged causing his screaming to get high-pitched, which is apparently medically accurate[/sp]
So I watched Evil Dead (original) and ED2 in succession for the first time because its.been a while since i saw the first.and i wanted a side by side comparison
i forgot how shitty ed1 was (in the best way) but it was interesting to see how campbell had improved as an actor and how the character of ash changed so radically between the two films
also raimis directing and the writing
also rewatching the original gave me a better appreciation of the remake which fucking owns by the way go see it if you havent
overall the experience was a solid 10/10
Finally decided to get Netflix, meaning that I'm going to go on a bender watching movies that I have yet to see. To start me off I watched Armageddon.
Thought it was pretty good but there were some aspects in the plot that were kinda dumb and it felt like they rushed through the whole getting to the meteor section.
All that said I did quiet enjoy it so I think it's around a 7/10.
Seen the new evil dead twice in the 4 days it's been out here. Gonna see it at least one more time cos I know someone who wants to see it.
Its fucking outstanding- amazing film on its own and a totally fantastic addition to the Evil Dead series. I don't really view it as a remake at all, and more just another evil dead film. it's pretty much not a remake. So different from the original but still super evil dead.
And the special effects were just unbelievable. All practical and everything looked real as fuck. Some girl in the theatre tried to leave but ended up passing out on her way at the [sp] scene where the nurse is cutting her face open with the mirror[/sp]
She was walking out in disgust, I was sitting there loving it and thinking to myself how I cannot wait for the uncut version on DVD :v:

I watched Evil Dead 2 as well for the millionth time, forever a 10/10

I saw a late night screening of Enter The Void last night too. The director's cut. 3 hours long. 8 reels. (it was a print version) It's directed and written by Gaspar Noe, who did Irreversible (which I absolutely love)
I really don't know what to rate this film. It is an absolute technical masterpiece with some of the most impressive and unique camerawork I have ever seen, as well as truly outstanding sound and cgi. Amazing visuals.
As for plot, that seems to kind of wither away after the first 20 or so minutes. the first 20 minutes are all POV of the main character (drug dealer in Tokyo), blinking and all, but then he gets shot and dies and his spirit leaves his body and from there on the plot stops become as solid. It becomes a combination of the main character seeing his life playing over again to watching the effects of his death on the people he knows. It becomes absolutely bleak the further into the film you get as well. It just kind of becomes little stories viewed from the pov of the main character's soul or something.
I can't say I enjoyed this movie, but I don't think it is a film made to be enjoyed. It is absolutely an experience.
It is an important film and I like that it exists. It's something utterly unique and different in so many ways. I do think Gaspar Noe is one of the most innovative directors of the past two decades, possibly ever. I love his stuff, and I know this film was his pet for 15 whole years before he was able to complete a script and get the $13million needed to make it (definitely a lot for something like this, but it definitely was needed to make the film as fascinating and unique as it is) and honestly I think it falls into its own trap. It is too self indulgent. Noe wrote this and just didn't want to get rid of anything. I think he just wanted to get everything onto the screen. I think I'd be able to say I liked the film much more easily were it about 45-60 minutes shorter. You could cut this down to about two hours and it'd still work imo. There were definitely scenes that either dragged or weren't necessary.
This isn't something I'd recommend to most people by any means but if you're interested in psychedelic imagery and experiences, innovative and incredible cinematography, and something that is at times utterly thrilling but can also be utterly soul crushing, I'd recommend it. Go in with an open mind and don't try to think about the point or how long it is- it ends when it ends, you'll make it worse trying to find the end before it comes because you'll just annoy yourself.
[editline]22nd April 2013[/editline]
it does have the best credits ever though

you can tell the film is a trip before the film even begins
Upstream Color was beautiful, especially the sound. Probably not a movie for everyone, but for me it was 9.5/10. The only things keeping it from a 10 were a minor plot hole and a bit of weird editing.
Sparse dialogue, a sort of "put it together in your head as you watch the movie" plot.
It's only getting a very limited release, so I have a feeling nobody will see it. If it's playing nearby and you get the chance, I definitely recommend it.

Also it's by the guy who did Primer.
Red Dawn (2012)
For those who don't know this a remake of the 1984 classic Red Dawn.
The remake was shit, 2/5
The characters were typical, the ideas, typical, people not understanding what 'orders' are in the military for about half the god damn movie which ends up harming others because of their selfishness and lack of selflessness.
The action sequences weren't always that great tbh, a few ambushes here and there were cool, but still, shit overall.

i hate how even though i live in a pretty major city, the only movie theaters that exist are those big megaplex theaters that only show blockbusters so if i wanna see upstream color or any new indie or foreign film, i'll never see it in a nice big screen. i'll have to wait for the dvd. there is one small theater that actually shows off-beat films. i'm glad for them, but they don't seem to usually have the licences to show some of the more popular little films.
the only cinema showing of that near me is next friday at 8:45am...
the fuck? :(
saw quite a few
Ripley's Game
Imo, Malkovic's best performance. Not everyone will agree but he really rules this role. Really well casted, very worthwhile crime thriller.
History of Violence
Same kind of thing, bit more psychological. Cronenberg is very skilled but in all honesty not his best. Eastern Promises really does hit another level compared to this, still worth a look.
Cell 211
Superb spanish prison film. Feels less about prison life but more kind of riot themed, but really an intense watch through and through. Not very popular which is a shame.
Rosemary's Baby
FU Polanski, you ruin my life :(
always twisting my brain it's not nice
The Place Beyond the Pines:
2 Hour drive to Columbus (Select theaters only), to see a 2 1/2 hour long movie. Extremely worth it.
I was surprised by how much depth it went into. Based on the trailers I just assumed it was Ryan Gosling robbing banks, but the story branches out into something much more dramatic and emotional.
There were some extremely tense scenes that were well done, like when Ryan Gosling is chased by the police and the camera doesn't leave the cop's dashboard. It's the little things.
9/10
The Motorcycle Diaries 8/10
Not at all a bad movie, but there's really no reason to watch it unless you're interested in Che Guevara's past.

i hear the two-parter with benicio del toro (simply titled Che) is more accurate than TMD

That's one of my favourite endings ever.
"He has his father's eyes"
if that whole statutory rape thing never happened, polanski, staying in hollywood, probably would have made even more great movies instead of stupid shit like this:

Take Shelter - 8/10
Shrek 2 > Shrek 1
I want to just tell you
Shrek 2 didn't have enough adult jokes as Shrek did
Well in all fairness the badguy is named Lord Fuckwad and is a human phallic symbol.
But I still reckon Shrek 2 is better.
Take Shelter - 8/10
This is a brilliant movie.
saw the Children Underground documentary.
just horrible.. so fucking rough and painful. Literally 10 year old kids being abandoned to live in horror among young paint sniffers and violence in a subway.
just damn..
Just finished Season 4 of The Wire
