the most memorable thing about the movie is how completely incompetent the military are in it they literally cannot do jack shit about anything. hi mr protagonist you are the literal only person in the entire united states army who knows how this bomb works. the only one. we have one guy in the whole army.
To be fair, the army has never had to go against giant monsters that emit emp's either. [editline]12th September 2014[/editline] I don't think there's a handbook for that shit.
The Omen - 2/10 shit film, shit script The protagonist is also a dumbfuck that would still say "this is nonsensical!" after seeing many evidences of various deaths.
Gran Torino (2008) I knew nothing about this film, and I think that's what made it all the more entertaining for me. My expectations were of Clint Eastwood just being Clint Eastwood, and whilst he has his trademark badassery, [sp]his tale of redemption and sympathetic friendship towards the Hmong family really caught me off guard, it surprised me in the best way possible. I definitely did feel emotional towards Walt in the final scenes leading to his death, and when it happened, it hit hard, and that scene specifically was exceptionally well shot, as if the whole movie wasn't already. The resolution to the film was definitely something different, relying on your expectations being subverted, thinking he is just going to shoot up the place, but is instead set in the reality that one man cannot take on the world alone.[/sp]Overall, a highly enjoyable film.
it's eastwood's epitaph rest in peace... [editline]12th September 2014[/editline] i mean after this: you can't really bounce back...
The Omen - 2/10 shit film, shit script The protagonist is also a dumbfuck that would still say "this is nonsensical!" after seeing many evidences of various deaths.
I'm assuming we're talking about the remake?
The Drop - 8/10 Highly enjoyable film! Very interesting from start to finish, good writing, great acting (besides the muddy accent from Noomi). Lots of twists and turns, Hardy is a fucking master, man. I love everything he is in and this is no different. I really liked hi performance. It was subdued, quiet, and very interesting. Gandolfinis last performance, while good, is certainly not the swan song that was "Enough Said", but you could tell he himself was settling into a new era of his acting. He had such fantastic performances in his last few films, its sad. People would have seen how great he can still be. This movie speaks a lot about the variety of characters he can play, since he is not a very typical "gangster" in this movie, but I dont think he will win any awards. His part was important but his screen time was only around 35-40 minutes. Hardy overshadowed him a bit, but it seems like he does that in every film he does. To my surprise it was even a little funny! Some very light-hearted moments [sp]the puppy was so cute![/sp] Overall, highly reccomended.
Whoops, accidentally posted this in the MCU Thread! Let's hope I chose the RIGHT thread this time...: My Godzillathon continues with 6 (SIX!) more movies watched. God DAMN do I need a hobby! Mothra Versus Godzilla: I think this is probably one of my most favorite Godzilla movies ever. Probably because it was one of the first ones I ever saw (not sure if it was THE first, but definitely close to it). But even so, the movie's got all the things one would want from a Godzilla movie without being too cheesy like later films. And the dubbing's pretty decent, to be honest (that may be the nostalgia-goggles talking, though). Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster: Another solid G-movie. I mean, this is where the series truly starts to skew towards the cheesy side what with the martian prophet and a monster from space (admittedly one of the most badass monsters to ever come from space), but it still delivers some good plot and monster action. Monster Zero: Pretty much the last movie except with more evil aliens and no Mothra. This is probably the first movie that gets heavy with the stock footage usage (as in, scenes from previous movies being reused to save money). I mean, there was some stock footage used in the last movie, but it got real noticeable here. Still, it's decent in terms of Godzilla movies. Godzilla Versus The Sea Monster: When you realize this was supposed to be a King Kong movie before they ended up swapping out Kong for Godzilla for some reason (I guess their deal with RKO/Universal fell through or something), it makes a lot more sense. And by that I mean this did not feel like a Godzilla movie. Very poor choice to make a Godzilla movie where all the monster action takes place on a tropical island and not a city. Still, it was much better than... Son Of Godzilla: Whoever thought Minya/Minilla/Godzilla's Son was a good idea should have been smacked in the face by a woman with really long and sharp nails. And they also kept with the "Godzilla on a tropical island instead of a city" theme. What the hell was up with that? Destroy All Monsters: Quite possibly the greatest Godzilla movie of all time. I don't know which sequence was better: the one where Godzilla, Rodan, Manda, and Mothra assault Tokyo (and the epic military bombardment that came after), or the final battle with almost every single monster Toho ever created at that point against King Ghidorah. Too bad this turned out to be the last breath the Showa (1954-1975) series took before drowning in a sea of cheese. Most of the remaining 6 movies in the first wave of Godzilla movies are just disappointingly bad.
I'm assuming we're talking about the remake?
Yes. The channel didn't put the year after the title, which they usually did, so I didn't know it was a remake. [editline]13th September 2014[/editline] How's the original?
it's eastwood's epitaph rest in peace... [editline]12th September 2014[/editline] i mean after this: you can't really bounce back...
Boo, he's a republican, career ruined!
To be fair, the army has never had to go against giant monsters that emit emp's either. [editline]12th September 2014[/editline] I don't think there's a handbook for that shit.
I think many people say it's a militaristic movie because despite the army fucking up in every single move(hey look they emit emps look it's even in the news but lets get our helicopters and planes as close as possible to them) the movie itself still contained a HUGE amount of showing military vehicles/men shooting and doing action movie stuff. It's not so much about whether the military loses or wins but the amount of military footage sure radiates that military wank-fest feeling.
ok ladies and gents: Enemy Now here's the thing, before the review; I am not confused. For the first time in my life. From the get go I knew this wanted to fool around with my head, but it was time I got my shit together and let the signs ease their way in and let it all flow m8. Now I ain't gonna spoil shit but this film is very very very dreamy, and I don't mean dream-like or dream pop but I definitely felt uneasy about Jake GylanalHAhall's character. His demeanor was very void as if in an earlier situation he had lost a lot. What he teaches is only vaguely important imo, it kind of binds the arachnid scenario together. It's also a metaphorical device to symbolize what his brain functions like. You can dig however deep into this film as you like but all in all, I enjoyed the film thoroughly and if you don't stick ye eyes to the screen then you'll lose. All throughout the film I was like "what the fuck is he doing and why", but then I realise, yeah this is all really fishy m8 and who the heck is this director anyway. edit: oh he directed Polytechnique, been meaning to see that.. Good film, go for it lad. [editline]13th September 2014[/editline] and IMDB average: Rating: 6.8/10 it's yet another time when the consensus can bury a deep hole, fill with spiders and dive into.
Boo, he's a republican, career ruined!
Even the Republicans thought that was pretty batshit.
How's Expendables 3? I'm just looking for some stupid, but fun movie. Last time I thought I was going to a stupid, but fun movie I got Transformers 4 and I'm still dealing with PTSD from that. :(
probably shit and not actually fun thats what the other two were
isn't it also pg-13
Yeah it is. Really, the only really fun movie out right now is Guardians of the Galaxy, and it certainly isn't stupid.
Even the Republicans thought that was pretty batshit.
I saw it. It was cringeworthy, but then I saw even worse things made by other people in the name of politics. But that's irrelevant. It's also irrelevant in terms of Clint's body of work. The question is who cares, and why.
what did he do and why he talkin to a chair
The Mummy with Boris Karloff More like Boring Karloff watch Frankenstein instead
The Mummy with Boris Karloff More like Boring Karloff watch Frankenstein instead
I haven't seen the original Frankenstein yet, but the 1932 version of The Mummy is not boring at all, to me at least. It's definitely a slow burner, but it is quite a haunting film, the opening scene especially. [editline]13th September 2014[/editline] Mallrats (1995) A super silly movie, but enjoyable. It's hit and miss at times, and I thought the character of T.S. was honestly a bit boring, but Jason Lee's character Brody was honestly hilarious, he definitely stole the show. Michael Rooker was great too, and I have always liked Jay and Silent Bob, Bob especially after seeing Chasing Amy before this. I liked it overall, despite it being hit and miss like I mentioned before, one scene I thought that was honestly not funny at all was the [sp]topless psychic, it felt quite pointless to me.[/sp] With that, I can still see myself coming back to this as a comfort movie.
Michael Rooker's ass is the highlight of Mallrats.
what did he do and why he talkin to a chair
He was speaking on a Republican convention. The talking to a chair was a part of an act, where he pretended to speak to Obama "sitting" in that chair, by asking rhetorical questions. He kind of overdone it by attempting actual dialogue with nobody. Many people laughed that he's the only person to lose an argument when talking to himself. But still I don't see how that affects his previous or future filmography.
Really, it doesn't though. Jersey Boys did well enough and got decent reviews, so it's not like people have stopped seeing his movies.
Boo, he's a republican, career ruined!
he's been a rep longer than we've been alive
r.i.p. [editline]13th September 2014[/editline] such a genius
Michael Rooker's ass is the highlight of Mallrats.
I agree completely.
american psycho - 8/10 was better than expected.
More Godzilla movies, and this time I made sure to post in the right thread! Godzilla's Revenge: Without a doubt the worst Godzilla movie ever made. No matter what you may think of any of the other movies, at least they aren't "bullied and neglected child fantasizes about hanging out with Godzilla's son to escape from the pain of it all". And boy does it give a lesson for the ages! "Children who are neglected and bullied can win respect from their peers by beating the local bully leader then joining them in their spree of torment and vandalization." This movie is a true inspiration to all, ain't it? Godzilla Versus Hedorah the Smog Monster: This movie is pure, uncut 60's funk. One must wonder at exactly how much pot was smoked when this movie was being made. Judging from the scene where Godzilla uses his atomic breath to fly, it must have been a lot. It's pretty damn dark, though. It probably had the biggest on-screen bodycount since the first movie, and the deaths are pretty gruesome, too. Hello, bodies literally dissolving until only bones are left! This stands in stark contrast with the fact that this movie continues the trend the previous movie started by having the main human protagonist be the schoolboy in short-shorts. Godzilla Versus Gigan: Okay, I still think Gigan is one of Godzilla's coolest adversaries (Ghidorah's my favorite, though, as you can see from my icon), but god damn was this movie dumb. I mean, space cockroaches looking to establish "perfect peace" by wiping out humanity with a cyborg chicken dinosaur? Ugh. Weirdly enough, this did not have a schoolboy is short shorts as the protagonist, though. Instead we have a comic book writer, his black-belt girlfriend, and two hippies. Oh, and Godzilla talks in a couple of scenes. Yeah, you heard that. This movie is notable for being the first movie where Godzilla actually bleeds, probably in order to win back some of the crowd that Gamera drew away with it's own bloody battles. Godzilla Versus Megalon: This was one of the best episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 ever. Godzilla Versus Mechagodzilla: Pretty decent, to be honest. Yeah, it's cheesy, but it's also pretty bloody. Apparently the bit of blood shed in Gigan encouraged Toho to spill gallons of Godzilla's blood, because he gets practically covered in it by the end of the movie. Mechagodzilla is an absolute badass, because every inch of his body shoots lasers and missiles. It's every child's greatest fantasy. Speaking of which none of them appear in this movie either. Yep, apparently only 3 of the 15 Showa Godzilla movies prominently feature schoolboys in shorts so short anyone who sees them automatically gets put on the Sex Offender's Registry (the third one was in Megalon). So that's one prominent myth about the series debunked. I guess people must have gotten that from the Gamera series, because kids like that were fucking everywhere in that series. Terror Of Mechagodzilla: This movie is REALLY dark. Like, "one of the main characters commits suicide and dies in the arms of her grieving lover" dark. And Godzilla gets his fucking ass kicked all over the place, it's one of the few times you wonder if Godzilla is going to be able to make it to the end of the movie. The movie itself is pretty good, although the low budget and waning interest in Godzilla shows in some places. It's no wonder that this was the last in the first wave of Godzilla movies. The shot in the end where Godzilla walks off into the sea was meant to be symbolic of the franchise as a whole going off to rest, possibly forever. But as some of us may already know know, there are still 15 more of these movies for me to go through (if you count the 1998 and 2014 remakes, because yes they are going to be included in my bingewatch), plus the rewatching of the Japanese version of the 1954 original (as mentioned before, I watched the American version with Raymond Burr first). Damn, Godzilla's got a lot of movies under his belt. If you count the two American movies he's had one movie released for every two years that have passed since he first rose from the murky depths of Tokyo Bay in 1954. Good thing I have them all! Or maybe not. Depends on your opinion on Godzilla.
Watched The Hundred Foot Journey. Rather good movie, okay plot, okay characters. Although it could use more food porn. 7/10 At least it was better than Lucy
