I just saw True Romance for the first time
Incredibly good film. Really, really enjoyed it.
Minority Report
4/5
SciFi Tom Cruise = Best Tom Cruise. An interesting thriller that begs you to ask the question: is a murderer still a murderer if you catch them before they commit the crime? It's really neat. Tom Cruise is still very Tom Cruise, but at least it works well with the character.
The Bourne Identity (2002) - 7/10 - Bit split on this. I do legitimately like the movie, but I couldn't get into it for some reason. I'll watch Ultimatum tonight, though.
I'm a little late on this, but I certainly hope you meant Supremacy right?

I'm not sure how I ended up missing one of the films. Didn't watch Ultimatum tonight anyhow, so no harm done.
I thought they took the wrong direction after the first movie and went batshit with the whole concept. It was interesting while it remained simple.
They should make a movie out of this one:

I think it could really work out.
The Last Airbender - 1/10

Raiders of the Lost Ark: 10/10 (ofc)
I hadn't seen this movie since I was a kid, so watching it again, it's still great. I don't really have to explain why this movie is fan-fuckin-tastic, but I will anyway! It perfectly accomplishes what it sets out to do, tell a re-imagining of old film serials. You got your Nazis, your exotic locales, your world-altering macguffin, and your steadfast american hero. It's always over the top but it's never cheesy, because it fully commits to its setting and themes, something that Crystal Skull doesn't, which explains why I wasn't a fan of that.
So yeah, if you haven't seen it in a while, watch it, it's definitely the best adventure movie, if not the best action movie, full stop.

I don't think this is quite right, I think the Tom Cruise in Magnolia is the most ballsy and true Tom Cruise in the history of cruise.
He just acts so natural in that film and you can really tell he got a buzz from just being what he really is in that movie :-)
Just watched Inglorious Basterds for the the first time. Jesus what a trip.
I love the scenes were they're just sitting down talking, and you're constantly trying to read the room. It has you by the balls just through the atmosphere. After those kind of scenes you actually feel sorta tired, like your brain was going haywire trying to pick up on every little thing the characters did. That wouldn't work unless the actors are damn good, and the movie delivers on that aswell.
10/10 definitely recommend!

Haven't seen Magnolia, but I knew he was in it and it was a PTA film. I'm going to have to seek it out now.

While I agree that Cruise works amazingly well in these usual people-drama, the best Tom Cruise is clearly Ethan Hunt.

I watched it too and I think what you're trying to say is that it doesn't feel as ... manufactured(?) as many "quirky" movies do.

Yes. I hate movies that feel dumb and odd for no good reason. There was effort put into this movie to make it feel real and it had a heart and a message. I've seen some stupid indie films that do "indie" stuff for "indie" sake but this isn't one of them. This is just a good movie.

nah, you could have had any old goof play that role, there's nothing special about Mission Impossible imo; they're just a bit of fun except MI:4 was actually quite very good.
With Magnolia though, you could never replace Tom Cruise no way.

Yo, that scene in Mission Impossible 3, where Ethan is pleading with Phillip Seymour Hoffmans character not to kill his wife shows how good an actor he is, the desperation and anger there, beaut.
I really liked all the mission impossible movies actually, save for 2, which is just too over the top.
A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
I'll summarize it for you guys quick

There now you don't need to watch the movie
Edge of Tomorrow: I will never ever judge another movie by its poster. Didn't care about it when it came out in cinemas, then I saw that even /tv/ liked it so I gave it a watch and damn it was good. Even though the core concept has been done before (Groundhog Day, Source Code) it still felt fresh and surprisingly funny at times, while it avoided becoming flat. 4.5/5
Edge of Tomorrow

Very enjoyable. The aliens were well portrayed. Wish they kept the battleaxe.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Special Edition - 9/10
One great thing about CE3K is its lack of direct narrative, leaving the mind of the viewer to interpret most of what's going on-screen, this is noticed by several of the characters as they tend to ignore everything else around them and focus on either visions of Devils Tower or the ETs themselves. In addition, there are just so many great shots throughout the film.

This version is notable for the fact that it adds an interior view to the ship, which apparently Spielberg was 100% against since he wanted it to remain a complete mystery, but the studio wouldn't allow a re-release without it. Of course, he still makes it a fucking stunning sequence and really I have to agree with Ebert on "why wasn't this in the original to begin with?"
The pacing feels a little unbalanced in comparison to the theatrical and I distinctly remember a scene or two that didn't make this cut that put more emphasis into Roy's obsession destroying his relationship with his family (not that it was all that great to begin with), which I've not seen in years so my memory is a little foggy when it comes to remembering, but I'll definitely be watching the dc and theatrical probably tomorrow or Monday. Overall, it's still a fantastic film and definitely does not hamper the theatrical edition in anyway.
Also, John Williams is the fucking man, as usual.

I still don't understand what this was, maybe some kind of elder extraterrestrial? It just shows up, and then is gone the next scene.
TL;DR I fucking love this film.
The Man Who Would Be King: 9/10
This movie's tone is so batshit weird that I love it. It's about two utterly insane british soldiers from the 1880s, played by Michael Caine and Sean Connery. Then then decide that they're going to go to a afghanistan and take a small chieftan and turn him into the king of a huge area. Oh, and they're also freemasons.
It's like Lawrence of Arabia on meth. And listening to Caine and Connery (the actors with arguably the most distinct accents ever) speak to each other is the funniest thing ever.
A Walk Among the Tombstones - 5/10
I tried not to compare it to Taken but wow it's hard not to. This one is lot slower paced and gives half of the film devoted to investigating the case, which I find interesting, but it started getting dull. Then the film just kept falling deeper in Taken territory (yes I know WATT was a book before Taken). The phone call to the captors telling them that he will find them and kill them, a fist fight to the death, it's all there. It's starting to really show that Neeson is getting typecast, which is a shame because he's really capable of acting.
There's a lot of hints toward symbolism or themes, but it never gets anywhere with any of them, so it just felt like it was getting too artsy at the end without having any substance to go along with it. The ending was also pretty unsatisfying. I did like the black kid though, he was a good character.

I'd give it a 7 or 8 just because of the cinematography, music, color correction, locations, etc. It was way more suspenseful and atmospheric than I thought it would be, but to be completely fair I had really low expectations.
Anybody seen The Guest? I never watched You're Next but this one sounds interesting.
Shawshank Redemption: 10/10
This is one of those movies I had put off seeing because I thought I knew everything about it, man goes to jail for a crime he's innocent of and breaks out. But of course, it's much more than that, it's a story about hope, right down to it's core. At first it's Andy's hopelessness that helps him to fit in with the other prisoners, who are as hopeless as him, but as it goes on, it's one of those rare movies that gets more and more hopeful as it goes on. A really beautiful movie, and I'm glad I finally watched it.
Now I'm gonna watch Schindler's List, 12 Angry Men, and Good Will Hunting and get back to you on that.
After that I'll have watched pretty much all the classics.
Empire of the Sun
watched with my 8 year old nephew, you may think it was hasty to choose a war film to watch with a young kid relative but he needed at least one mature movie in his canon of viewing and this movie was fantastic.
Christian Bale, child actor and he is a motherfucker in this one. Not often you find a hollywood kid actor and he turns out to lift the film to a new height.
This film is highly Spielbergern, and it's so clearly his style it's not even funny. Very predictable but the character acting was highly worthy. Mr Malkovich just a great pick to play alongside Mr Bale.
I had a few issues with the film itself, it's slightly longwinded and kind of inconsistent, but in my opinion fuck all that out the door and let's talk about how influential it would be to see this as a kid.
The faults like in the fact that it's supposed to be a war film but falls into a more adventure style which just wasn't right in the context of the preceding scenes.
That being said, it had potential to go up against thou Schindler but in my mind, it's on its way to being a mini-Schindler/Dr.Jones and that's ok.

But can you at least admit the final fight scene was awfully edited? Whoever did it just zoomed every shot in post, it looked hilarious
just saw Cold in July
Was pretty good. Although it felt a little weird towards the end [sp]since it was basically "three old guys go and murder a bunch of young guys". I know they had a pretty good reason for killing them but it still felt a little weird[/sp] but yeah overall I enjoyed it quite a lot
The King of Comedy
4/5
A strange Scorsese movie, in the sense that it's a comedy. It's not incredibly funny- in fact, it has some rather sad moments- but it has some good moments. De Niro does a great job as the aspiring fan, and Jerry Lewis is good as man dealing with fame. Again, it's not what you expect from Scorsese, but on the other hand, it's brilliant in an understated way.
Guardians of the Galaxy
amazing/10
story isn't all that great, but the characters, soundtrack and overall charm made me forget about it and just sit back and enjoy the ride. great movie, enough has been said already.
i haven't watched GotG yet, fellas, so stay tuned for an accurate appraisal of this film
