The Guard 9/10 That was almost perfect, funny, clever, cheeky. Great movie.
In Bruges was better
American Psycho - (2000) Really good. A disturbing and violent film with a lot of interesting character development by Christian Bale. Don't think I'd change anything. [sp]The scene where he had his secretary Jean (over?) was amazing.[/sp]
In Bruges was better
I liked the main character in The Guard much more though, maybe that's why I like it a bit better.
Generation P (2011) For me, it's one of the best Russian movies ever because it doesn't hold back. It's almost acidic in it's satire, quite a lot of our Soviet past gets shat on, including but not limited to the Yeltsin presidency and the Soviet mentality. It's a book adaptation, and, sadly, it's noticeable - quite a lot of dialogue is cut (Gussein is a notable exception), and some design elements are different. If you're ever in the mood for a trippy movie about marketing in post-Soviet Russia, prophecies, and drugs, Generation P is for you. Beware it's international trailer, for it's quite deceptive. It doesn't convey how the movie feels at all, but it's the only way for you to know what it is. This is my second viewing in 3 years, and it's still as good as the first time. It's a shame that they had to make it 2 hours, really.
Boyhood - 9/10 I get why people would mostly see it as a 7 or 6, but oh wow I'm in love with this film. I don't really care about the whole gimmick of using the same actors throughout, but it did mean that they all had prior experience working with each other and it shows, they felt like a legitimate family. I probably rated it higher because I can relate pretty strongly to Mason, and I kinda felt like almost everything ever said to him was said to me at one point or another, I realise that was the point, but it still drew me in. I'm also incredibly happy the movie ended the way it did and that it didn't go TOO overboard with the drama or rely on little fun film moments that wrap things up but feel forced.
Gone Girl 9.5/10 I really enjoy those types of movies where [sp] the genre simply changes right in the middle of the film, but subtle enough to keep the main themes going [/sp] and that's what really sold it for me. Going in without knowing anything was a really good idea.
Dead Poets Society. 10/10 I have no idea why i did not see this one sooner. What a great movie. Go see it before you die boys.
Gattaca (1997) almost made me cry/10 It was good.
ok ok ok, serious movies this week: firstly these 3 films might disturb and infuriate people but the choices kind of fell into place and that's all: Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer Monster First two are quite good documentaries regarding Aileen (both made by the same British bloke) and then I saw that Monster was actually a feature film based on her. The documentaries aren't essential but they do give you an insight on the fucked up nature of the entire situation. For one thing, this disturbing person managed to make me empathize with her and that's very rare. Not often do serial killers get this much attention but what's unique is that the fact she lived through a ridiculous upbringing, kicked out at 12 and had to sleep in the woods for her life and then hitchhike just grabbed me completely. Then her demeanor when interviewed. SO not the Charlie Manson scenario, but the closer to her death sentence you could clearly see she was mentally obtuse and she ended up dying believing she'd been set up. That's fucking tragic and the MOVIE is absolutely outstanding. Charlize Theron encapsulates the goddamn role like no other and she's just naturally gifted enough to completely lose herself to the role. That's tough, and she looked the part I have no clue how they managed to derange her look to that level. Great film though and has immortalized the uniqueness of this particular serial killer who you can't help but feel for, in the end. Green Zone Paul Greengrass-tastic. Yet... such a poor average rating and I think it's all to do with politics and not actual content. The acting wasn't marvelous but in my mind, it was all about intent and execution and it never for a second deviated from that Greengrass feeling. It also might not be historically accurate but that didn't make Braveheart bad so why this? I thought it was just as good if not better than Captain Phillips, not so much with performances but as a whole it was a heart-clenching film that didn't stop moving. Well photographed too. Even at the end, there really is no calm at all. Mr Greengrass is very good at lowering life expectancy. IMDB consensus just really did poorly on this one.
Automata I was quite looking forward to seeing this being a fan of robotics, artificial intelligence and the like in fiction. So I was pretty let down when this movie didn't really feature those things too much. Yeah they were there and they were involved, but what the movie really boils down to is a pretty simplistic plot about a man being hunted down while stranded in the desert. It felt shallow, in need of a more fleshed out universe and larger scope. But it is a fairly low budget movie and for what it is it was okay.

I was actually hoping it would be a Blade Runner of our time.
Damn, what a shame. I was actually hoping it would be a Blade Runner of our time.
The city is definitely influenced by it but that's where the similarities end.

The movie not explicitly spelling out the things you mentioned doesn't mean they're not there. The setdesign was great and telling more than enough about the world they are living in, the desert, the wall, the slums. What the movie didn't do was pointing the camera at things going "here now look at THAT" and I really like that. The viewer has to pay attention. And about the AI thing, the scene with the doctor and especially the way the laws were created(which even is explained later on) give more than enough material to think about. The things the movie lacks in are not the simplicity of the plot. Simplicity done good is always better. Just the ending should've been a bit more ... creative, I agree with that.

I didn't want everything spelled out to me, I never even said I was confused and I certainly didn't miss anything. There is just nothing there. In place of a complex thought provoking plot there is just empiness filled with pretty visuals.
Automata But it is a fairly low budget movie
in this day and age, $15 million is definitely not a low budget movie. Monsters was only $500k and it did a lot of things millions of dollars didn't.
if it's under $10m it is consider low budget
in this day and age, $15 million is definitely not a low budget movie. Finished watch Dracula: Dead and loving it Funny as fuck, and I loved Leslie Nielsen. 9/10 I didn't watched the youtube version, but if you want, there's the full movie up on youtube:
But it featured those quite a lot. Only not as in-your-face as in iRobot ?
It didn't though, that's what I'm saying. That's where we disagree. You're saying that this movie is a work of incredibly subtle genius while I'm saying there is simply nothing there.

The robot that polished the locker in front of his station so he could look at himself, the gesture when the other one gets shot, the way the laws were integrated into the bio-kernels, the chick-bot even showing some character development, the "dog" and so on and so on? Then about the backstory, what about the wall, the slums, his drive with the train and pretty much every piece of set design full cues about the world they are living in? Did you miss all of that?

But you said it didn't feature robotics and AI stuff. The story was a man hunting down someone who altered the robots but finds out that [sp]the robots alter themselves[/sp] So how exactly is the story unrelated
Frank Quirky, wacky, incredible emotional and hilarious at times, but most importantly - extremely original. I think the meaning was a bit lost in the film, or it wasn't meant to have one - either way, it's going to be a cult classic, especially after Domhnall Gleeson and Scoot McNairy will become big in a few years, their work and [sp]Fassbender's[/sp] was just stellar.
You don't have to spoiler tag that, his name is already on the fucking poster for the movie. If anything spoiler tagging it is a bigger spoiler in itself.

Gone Girl 85/100
wrong song
So this is where [sp]she fell[/sp]? Anyway the film was an absolute beauty, masterpiece. Every cell in me loved it. [editline]12th October 2014[/editline] Brought a tear to my eye now, god damn it.
Lucy it was certainly interesting and surprisingly low on the movie sin counter the sci-fi got a bit bogus at times but it was still good. 7/10
