Boogie Nights
9/10
The movie really echoes Scorsese both in style and form; it's probably most similar to Goodfellas and Raging Bull but it is held together in such a unique way by Anderson, you forget about the inspirations he took (kinda for me because I love Scorsese?). Filled with really great performances (e.g. dr steve brule, dr octopus and burt reynolds) and focused on such a interesting/strange subject matter with honesty, the movie is an amazing watch.
You really stick with the characters, story and the setting. The era of the 70s-80s really sinks in but it never gets too obnoxious-in-your-face (unlike american hustle imo). A special film and a great example of Anderson's cinematic flexibility.
So I rewatched alien resurrection because I found my dad's DVD copy of it
1/10
The 1 is for the test tube room scene. Everything else in this movie is fucking garbage, holy shit.

okay wow i remembered the ladder scene
[sp]why the fuck did dreadlocks man cut himself loose after the alien clearly died, after ron pearlmen spent like 15 seconds shooting at it upside down with 2 guns, missing at least 20 times (with guns that were explained as being disposable with "20 shots," and these are pistols so they probably had even less)?? like, the alien was dead and was hanging on by a finger or two. he could have shaken his foot, or -could have climbed out of the water- because he was clearly okay, aside from an acid burn[/sp]

Not even including The Shining, for shame.
Also, the first 3 Romero films are worth mentioning (Night, Dawn, and Day).
the shining is pretty good but its not scary (i dont lke the film much tbh Im not really sure why. i get that it's good but not for me)
other good horror films are:
Martyrs
Kill List
The House Of The Devil
Sinister (i expected this to be generic american haunting film but it's different and really really good)
The Descent
The Devils Rejects (idk the consensus on this film really but I fucking love this)
Maniac
this is all pretty new stuff (last 10ish years), all good tho

halloween, h2, 3 is optional, 4 and 5 are silly but have continuity with 6, end with h20. rob zombie remake is optional but don't watch his sequel.
Kill List
I watched this the other day, at first I was mixed on it but the more I thought about it the more I liked it
also
The House Of The Devil
I love this movie
Gone Girl
finchy finchy finchy... why you do this to me m8.
For years, I've admired Mr Finch and his style and intent has always been so certain and so poised... ever since his debut film Se7en.
This film fits VERY snuggly in his great campaign of movies and it is really one heck of a film.
Thing is, since day one I've always trusted Mr Finch to do good and this time, HE HAS REALLY FUCKING TWISTED MY BRAIN. :(
What makes the entire film even more uneasy is the way Trent Reznor makes ambient music. And the more delicate and sweet the music is, the harder it is to concentrate on how this film is really DEGRADING MY BRAIN. Nothing feels good.
Thanks.
Oh yeah the music in Gone Girl really made it. The soundtrack in the scene where [sp] Amy kills Desi [/sp] was fucking harrowing and really made the scene for me.
What a great film. Wanna see it again.

Okay, so I forgot a couple.

And that. Kill List is fucking excellent.
every film on mikeys list is fucking great, watch them all
reminds me to give Zodiac another watch, it's probably the only Fincher film I haven't given a good viewing. Saw it years ago but can't remember it much.

Probably goes without saying, but watch the Director's Cut if you can. It's one of his more underrated movies.
I seriously can't stress how 10/10 Alien is. Check it out if you haven't. Best horror movie.
Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are up there as well. Throw in any of the Evil Dead movies if you want something a bit more ridiculous.
And if you want something a bit more recent, The Descent is probably the most effective horror film of the 00s.
I saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time this year as the closer to an All night horror thing one of my local cinemas does (every 6ish months, the last one was actually this Saturday just passed but I couldn't make it) and I ended up hating it because past the first 30 minutes the audio is fucking nothing but the girl screaming at the top of her lungs and being tired as hell (it started at like.. 7:30am?) and it being really fucking loud i felt like my ear drums were gonna pop for a whole hour and i resent the film a lot for that
the film was probably fine i just couldnt goddamn stand getting my ears destroyed tbh
I tried watching the sequel though and I turned it off after 30 minutes cos it's fucking horrendously shit
[sp]the blair witch project[/sp]
The Crimson Wing - 8/10
the flamingo is my new favourite animal period

what is this no mention of

build up to 4:50
The fact that she did that is pretty much the only cool part of Alien Resurrection.
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly - 10/10
never saw this before for whatever reason, watched it tonight and holy god what an amazing film across the board
it's hard for me to articulate how much i loved it, this is pretty much essential viewing
yeah i loved the ending, especially when it showed the pov of [sp]Ugly on the noose[/sp]
fuck i am so glad i watched that instead of xmen
I wrote and directed a western one time, wish I still had the video somewhere. It had a standoff at the end to Ecstasy of Gold and shit, it was awesome.
lee van cleef in the intro for 'the bad/angel eyes' is still the best thing ever
"The pity is, when I'm paid, I always follow the job through."
I love that line.
Gone Girl
That might be the most Fincherish of Fincher's film I saw. Stunning, brilliant, and although at the beginning I hated [sp]the lack of closure at the end,[/sp] after awhile I've realized that any other option was unexecutable and [sp]it was actually a great showing of the stalemate they've put themselves in. Oh, and I'm a sucker for the "same ending/beginning scene but with different meaning".[/sp]
Simply flawless.
Purge: Anarchy 6/10
a big step up from the first turd of a movie, which isn't saying much. The first act is good but it gets kind of weak towards the end and as a whole it wasn't really anything special. Just a mildly entertaining flick.
Haven't seen Gone Girl yet, but I have to ask a question I haven't really seen people discuss: How's Tyler Perry in it?
Preferably without spoilers, but it's not a big deal for me

He's actually quite decent. Nothing spectacular, but he plays his role exactly the way it was meant to be played. So no worries here.
