7/10 for the godfather, hmm
what even qualifies as a great movie for you
i think he meant the trilogy as a whole
even with G3's flaws it still doesn't put down the first two being absolute masterpieces.
i haven't even seen the third godfather
godfather 1 and 2 are amazing, the second was my favorite. loved the flashbacks with robert de niro
Part III is okay. It has some good moments, but the whole cousin-incest plot was ridiculous, not to mention Sofia Coppola barely acted. That being said, Al Pacino is better in it than he was in Part II, in my opinion. However, I'm kind of biased because I didn't like Michael's plotline in II. Sure, the whole point was to make Michael into a monster, but it felt a little ridiculous after a while. Young Vito's plotline was much better.
The first film is the best one, Part II suffers from pacing issues and Michael's story line being weak because he becomes an insufferable asshole.
I haven't bothered to watch Part III yet.
John Carpenter's The Thing - 10/10
damn, what a movie
words cannot describe my love for the thing
The Thing is the best sci-fi thriller I've ever seen. Alien is good, but The Thing is on a whole different caliber.
Even though everyone likes john carpenter I always feel like he's underappreicated? Like everyone thinks of him as a cool b-movie director but like the dude's one of the fucking best from the 80s, so much absolute genius, thing is his genius is very subtle so it's harder to see exactly what it is that makes his films so good. I may be wrong by tho and everyone else sees this lol but he's pretty much perfect at what he does.

well, shit, i just had a 3day marathon with the godfather trilogy
Wait, but that's Dog Day Afternoon
oh hey, I watched Halloween last night
8/10, gr8 slasher film
The Lego Movie - 9/10
Had a good time watching it, but [sp]the way Lucy's and Batman's relation was depicted was absolutely bullshit.[/sp]
I wouldn't rate it as high. It's just a children's film, and not as good as, say Toystory or Monsters Co., and it didn't even have the motherfucking transparent orange chainsaw.

yes it did, sort of. i know they pointed it out when they went through the sets timeline scene
I don't know about that. Alien is easily the best horror film I've ever seen, but The Thing is definitely up there, and it's pretty comparable to Alien in a few ways as well.
John Carpenter is fucking amazing. Almost got the chance to meet him a few years back, but it never came to fruition.
In fact, if Alien isn't my favorite horror movie, it's Halloween. I don't know, there's something about the simple concept of it and how well it was made. Every scene is awesome to me. It's just a shame that they had to drag the series out as long as they did.

Plus omg have you seen the masks in the later Halloween movies?
Look at that. Lifeless and intimidating. The eyes seem empty, the face almost looks fleshy and dead. Classic mask.

Then Halloween 4 came along and fucked everything up, but that's not the worst of it.

Then H20 happened and WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?! You can see the eyes! The mask looks plastic! The hair is ridiculous! Why can't they just use a Michael Myers mask? I could find a better one at a fucking party store!

[sp] I actually liked H20, though. [/sp]
fun fact: the original mask was a mask of william shatner painted white and had a wig glued onto it.
13 Assassins - 10/10
I'd never been a big fan of samurai movies, I never could appreciate the cheesiness of some. This movie, however, builds up a very real suspense. The first half is nothing but great acting, building the main characters and plot perfectly before the climax. More importantly, it felt real. Absolutely zero wire-fu, more of what you'd expect of that time period. One character throws off the feel of the movie by a LOT, which made zero sense to me until I found out he's not exactly what he seemed to be. Despite that, I highly recommend this beautiful bloodbath.
I did some Halloween film night. First double feature: two new westerns, The Homesman and The Salvation
The first one, directed by the great Tommy Lee Jones is actually a road movie simply with a western setting. It has an amazing ensemble cast (with many of them appearing for a single scene), and this element and direction was amazing. The film had a very raw feeling, with soft cuts and little to no flashy gimmicks. The story was lacking, and sometimes even boring but I guess if you like something calmer and more dramatic - it's a good choice.
The second one stands on the opposite side of the spectrum to the first one. Starring amazing Mads Mikkelsen, Eva Green, Eric Cantona (wtf?) and poor man's Javier Bardem it is an amazing tribute to the golden age of western, I could easily see a film like this being made in 60s. I'm not sure if it's a spaghetti western, or more of a classical one, it certainly has elements from both. It's entertaining, at times even thrilling but also cheap (but not corny) and naive, with painful CGI. I'm a huge fan of westerns so despite all of that I really enjoyed it.
Now, there's traditionally The Thing waiting for me.
Hercules
6/10
This movie exceeded my initial expectations, I thought it'd be some lame shit like "Immortals" or "Clash of the Titans". But this movie was pretty good for what it was. I really liked the way they never really "tell" that he's the son of Zeus, and it all is just the effect of storytelling and legends.
Now it wasn't a masterpiece, but if you want to watch some ancient Greece action, this one is pretty solid.
I like immortals and clash of the titans better, which I agree aren't great either. Hercules tries to do something original in showing how his legend might have originated but it means you get a boring run of the mill action/revenge story without the cool greek mythology.

they didn't have wire-fu in the 60s
and 13 assassins was only made 4 years ago
not to mention it's a jidaigeki film, not the matrix. they don't do crazy martial arts, they just fuck shit up with katanas. also the zatoichi series is gold.
A Separation (Dir. Asghar Farhadi, 2011)- 10/10
Absolutely incredible film, first piece of Iranian cinema I've watched but this and the new film "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night", described as a "Vampire-Western", have me very intrigued in the country's industry. I was blown away by this piece of very real, visceral and fantastic drama. As the title suggests, it's about a husband who is going through a divorce with his wife because she wants to leave Iran as she doesn't feel safe in the country, and also take their daughter. He wants to stay. As the wife is at her parents, Nader, our protagonist, must hire a helper for his father who has Alzheimers. The film is about what unfolds around the helper, and one event truly sets the film in motion, coming in after a very good character-building 30 or 40 minutes. We see how this event affects everyone, from the husband, wife, daughter and carer and her family. It's all so dynamic but so natural and fluid, the entire thing is genuine and uncompromising. It also gets rather political as it goes on which was very interesting.
This film is perhaps the best of 2011 and I can't really think of anything better in the years since, either. I expected greatness from this, but I was truly blown away. Just an absolutely masterfully crafted film, with very genuine acting and tpo-notch subtle direction. It has no music [sp]until the final shot of the film as the credits roll over it, which is just... Incredible[/sp], and it works really well, the story unfolds amazingly and it's actually very scary and grounding.
I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good drama, about real people. Its 2h runtime is not notably long anyway, but it just flies by because of how fantastically paced and well-made this film is. Engaging from the first shot to the last, I adored it entirely.

still need to watch that director's follow-up film... supposed to be real good.

Fredo had a machine gun in The Godfather? when?

He also faked his death on that boat and went to Wyoming
Nightcrawler
Yeah it was great. Really gripping, great cinematography and a fantastic performance from Jake. It was also surprisingly funny at times, mostly down to how bizarre the main character is. Seriously he's such a good character, holds the whole film up with ease. It may not be for everyone though, as the guy sitting next to me was very vocal about how much he disliked it; constantly yawning and stretching and breathing heavily, then once it finished he said "well that was fookin' shit" loud enough so that everyone could hear.
fuck that guy though it was super good
Just got done with the book and the movie of Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix.
Book-to-movie adaption, 5/10 almost a waste of my time.
Movie by itself 6.5/10, its a bit of a mess of a movie.
Nightcrawler
5/5
Someone said that this movie was 2014's Drive. They sold this movie short. This was amazing. Jake Gyllenhaal was fucking ace.

it's a botched adaptation alright but as a movie it's in the upper half of the series.
half-blood prince, however, should be burned and remade. the movie, not the book. book was excellent imo.
the thing 2011
the only thing i commend this movie for is being the worst possible movie i've ever been able to watch all the way through ill the end, which is something i can't say about that new die hard movie and a few others.

How was his eye-blinking on this one? I need to know that first.
Watched Maze Runner last night.
I really, really, really liked the first 4/5 of the movie where the maze is this mysterious thing and they have to find out how it works. They could constantly be in danger and the whole thing is governed by rules which they have yet to find out.
And then come the last few minutes of the movie.
[sp]
The maze isn't some interesting ancient structure, but the whole thing is basically Truman Show 2.0. The maze wasn't governed by rules, but just some people watching them on monitors who just did whatever they felt like.[/sp]
[sp]
And the explanation they give why they did it sounds like pure bullshit. "The sun burned the Earth"? Couldn't they at least have used a meteor, a super volcano or global warming?
And what's that with the virus? Why even "destroy" the world when they whole point is the virus and not the destroyed Earth.[/sp]
[sp]
I assume the reason is A. sequel potential and B. a side effect of a (bad?) book adoption.[/sp]
So all in all, my ratings are:
Maze Runner first 95 minutes: 9/10
Maze Runner last 18 minutes: 2/10
Maze Runner as a whole: 8/10
im not sure who goes into that movie expecting something genuinely smart
The problem is that it's trying to be smart. I'd have liked a simple everyone outside the maze is dead because of mutants, the people in and under the maze are all that's left. Have fun.
I thought it was a 6/10 and pretty bland until the last 30 minutes where they just gave up and the movie stopped trying to make any sense. Don't know how it managed to get so dumb in so many ways there.
The Thing is the best sci-fi thriller I've ever seen. Alien is good, but The Thing is on a whole different caliber.
If The Thing had been a bit smarter about when and how to show the titular monster instead of giving really long well lit shots of it just to showcase the practical effects it would have been better than Alien as a thriller.

Saddest thing about the 2011 reboot/prequel/whatever the fuck is that they initially had all the practical effects done and functional but had to scrap the whole thing for digital effects. It's a shame too, because the practical effects looked really nice. Even then it wouldn't have been a good film but at least it would have been a good showcase.

i don't get this idea
john carpenter did way more stuff in dealing how to place, show, hide, the thing than just gratuitous "look at my cool monster guys" shots
