Third time seeing this all the way through and still love every second of it. Probably my favorite movie, if you haven't seen this you need to.
10/10
I know you're perma-banned. I know you might not ever see this, but thank you for this post. I never heard of this movie(I don't know how), but holy fuck.
Amazing. Just absolutely fucking amazing. It made me cry because of how it is.
jesus christ i tried to start watching twin peaks but its just so goddamned depressing and dark
theres just something about stuff that was made back in the 80s and 90s thats just so visceral and depressing, like this and the shining and stuff like that

i really love the juxtaposition between the quirky, and silly activities and characters with the dark, and depressing events that are unfolding at the same time.
I found Twin Peaks melodramatic and cheesy.

Well yea it's literally a satire of soap opera
saw john wick and it ruled?
[editline]6th November 2014[/editline]
the opening is a beautiful example of 'show, don't tell', that too many actions fail to adhere to these days. it shows you everything you need to know with great shots and no dialogue. it's perfect
i hope keanus stunt double makes more films? he clearly knows how to do action and has a good grasp on storytelling to boot.
its got a heck of a lot of directorial flair for the debut of a stunt double
John Wick really feels like David Leitch grew fucking tired of being in movies where the camera never stops shaking as a cheap effect and decided to take his revenge with the steadiest god damn movie he could pull off while keeping action scenes efficient.
I, too, would be fucking pissed if I had to be a stunt actor on The Bourne Legacy.

I'm just saying that I didn't like that about it.
Benny's Video (dir. Michael Haneke, 1992)- 7.5/10
Interesting and very captivating film about a 14 year old who lives live through the disconnect of TV and video. Recording most of what he does, looking through the window via a camcorder hooked to his TV rather than the windows which constantly have the blinds down. The boy is also a sociopath, as we learn more and more as the film goes on, climaxing early but the repercussions of this event resonate brilliantly through the rest of the film. The climactic event where [sp]he kills the girl with that gun thing[/sp] was truly fucking harrowing and disturbing to watch, up there as one of the hardest things I've watched in a movie- seeing it all play out by looking at the TV screen capturing it all (via camera), it really adds this disconnect but also makes you realise where you are and in ways this film works similarly to Haneke's next feature, the masterful Funny Games which is one of my very favourite films. Both male stars in this film are also two of the 3 main male characters in Funny Games.
I recommend this, not Haneke at his most masterful but a very good early film with a great lead performance and a really interesting story with some great, great moments.
Misery (Dir. Rob Reiner, 1990)- 6/10
It's okay? Not very scary, some good moments of tension though. Kathy Bates was not that great imo and it was absolutely not an Oscar worthy performance or even close, she was hammy as fuck and even though that worked for the character I suppose, she was still very flat the entire time. There was no emotion or depth to her performance whatsoever. Wow sometimes she was quiet and sweet sometimes she was rly loud!! amazing. shouting=good acting i guess (dicaprio shouts and gets red a lot.. wheres th e oscar??). Unfortunately the entire film rests on her performance as many people say however as I was not convinced by her I didn't really like this movie that much. I thought James Caan turned in a much better performance. The story is average, the dialogue is cheesy, the direction is also cheesy (you can tell Reiner is an American comedy director from the 80s/90s... very cliche), the overuse of generic music is cheesy. It was ok?
Not really recommended but I wouldn't turn you away from it, thing is it's not a very interesting drama/thriller nor is it scary. Just kind of sits in the middle and does nothing much. A resounding "meh".
[editline]5th November 2014[/editline]
Misery also felt rather empty, I'd have liked to see more info on the characters, be it backstory or peronsality or something- there are very, very minor hints at Annie's past but really it's nothing. Not that I like to be spoonfed but a bit of characterisation doesn't hurt... Not to mention it'd spice up the lackluster story with some interesting development and mystery solving (like if Caan worked more stuff out during his times around the house or something?)
pls explain what was so good cos im aware it is pretty acclaimed but I just didn't get it at all

the wave
a pretty good update
Lethal Weapon 6
One of the most emotional and manliest of all Lethal Weapons yet.
I won't spoil the film to an extent, but what caught me off guard is an event that is akin to the Red Wedding. It caused an emotional distress between Murtaugh and Riggs, which eventually drew them closer together as partners and friends. The shower scene was so raunchy with manliness that it made me cringed from the sight of other manly parts that were shown.
The epic gunfight at the end drew me on the edge of my seat. I wasn't sure if Lazarus was going to get away with it or not, but here comes in Riggs's basketball shot, which was an amazing climatic ending to Lazarus by the way.
Just don't watch the ending. I nearly gagged at it.
is it worth watching completely? i dropped it around the time the two main actors switch roles. very confusing

the wave
a pretty good update
I liked the 80s TV movie of The Wave, would you say this is a lot better, if you've even seen the 80s one?
I liked the 80s TV movie of The Wave, would you say this is a lot better, if you've even seen the 80s one?
yes i have seen the 80s one (it's a mandatory viewing in my old high school), which is why i was interested in seeing a newer version of it.
just keep in mind that there are alternate parts but for the most part the plot is the same. also, it's in germany of all places which makes it even better imo.
also i don't think you can really compare one to another, the way they flow is based on the periods they were made in, i wouldn't be surprised if we had another remake in the next 30-50 years.
Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem - 8/10

This was an interesting movie. Sort of an extended music video, featuring Daft Punk's "Discovery" album in its entirety with minimal added sound effects, Interstella 5555 tells the story of an intergalactic band kidnapped to become an Earth pop sensation.
I had previously seen a little bit of this, the music video for "Harder Better Faster Stronger", and it was pretty odd and confusing out of context. Seeing the track - and the entire album - re-contextualized in this animated story gave me a whole new appreciation for both. "Digital Love", one of my favorite songs, has an excellent segment, and the part featuring "Something About Us" was similarly beautiful. I was reminded at times of Space Dandy, another anime featuring imaginative visuals and a funky electronic soundtrack.
Although some parts flow awkwardly, I was impressed at how well the story flowed without any standard exposition or speaking; some of the added atmospheric sound effects were fitting, though I found a few to be unnecessary. I similarly liked how the music tracks synced with what was happening onscreen - I'd like to know more about how the movie was produced to line up with the songs.
It was great. If you like Daft Punk, sci-fi, and musicals, and aren't afraid of a little strangeness, definitely give Interstella 5555 a watch.
I love Interstella 5555, Discovery has such a cinematic flow that lent itself to the film so well that I have to ask whether Daft Punk had the idea of making the film out of the album from the outset.
Watched Skyfall yesterday. I'm really disappointed.
The last James Bond movies I watched had awesome villains with ice castles and laser satellites and James Bond was a fucking super hero using exploding pens and remote controlled invisible cars.
In Skyfall James Bond is a shell of his former self, has trouble shooting guns, is an alcoholic and his most advanced gadget is a pistol that doesn't shoot.
And the villain is an ex-agent who manipulates stocks and and beats women.
Also, they can't count to 16

I had to pause the movie for a few minutes at that point because that was so offensively bad and cringeworthy. How does something like that slip through? That was supposed to be a major plot point.
5/10
Fury - 7/10
I thought it did a great job of showing tankers as soldiers, and rather fragile survivors. Also thought it was very neat how the tank is treated as really just a big iron box that you try and fight from any way you can, instead of what you'd expect from a tank action movie. I feel the end of the movie is a massive let down though, it could have been less ridiculous and still as bad ass.
Tangerines - 9/10
2013 Estonian/Georgian film about the war/ethnic conflict in Abkhazia after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Two Estonian's in a village look after two men wounded from both sides. One of my favourite war films in a long time. For the majority of the film it's just 4 men in a house, so it might not be everyone's idea of a good war film.
i loved skyfall as an action movie, not as a bond movie
It could easily have been a 7+ if they had left out the offensively bad techno-babble and didn't call the main character James Bond, but calling it a James Bond movie just sets expectations which it never even tries to live up to.
I like how Person of Interest does its techno-babble or tries to avoid it actually. When someone is doing some computer magic (literally magic like in pretty much every movie/show that includes computers) they don't try to explain how they are doing it. They just say what they are trying to accomplish. Showing hex codes with letters other than A-F and talking about "security through obscurity" like it is something good just feels like they are trying to personally insult me ("You are literally so dumb you wouldn't notice the difference between an A and an R if it was a major plot point"). Don't show the screen if you don't have anything of use to show. Just let Q explain that he had to give the bad guy's code full access to the whole building so it would show him the map. (Also don't let someone who we're supposed to think is intelligent give the evil guy's code full access to the spy HQ)
I realize that I might care more about that shit because I come from a technical background, but I can't imagine anyone would be happy either if they did CPR on someone's leg because he got poisoned when the cat stung him. You just don't do that in a movie that tries to get taken seriously.
interstellar. weird.
it had me up until a certain point, and then sort of jumped the shark.
[sp]eventually matthew mcconaughey accidents himself into the 5th dimension and discovers he was the driving force of their initial discoveries by poking books off his daughters book shelf. trapped in the 5th dimension. built by future humans, for this purpose. so he can save humans. who would not be alive to build this 5th dimension accessible by wormhole because he would have failed his mission without it. so that doesn't make sense. and then afterward once he delivers his message to his daughter the 5th dimension world closes (???) and he's back floating in space and actually gets rescued. like wtf. for reallies? up until this point it was fucking great.[/sp]
[sp]i really wish it had wrapped up less nonsensically without any impossible to suspend disbelief for made up future science and time travel.[/sp]
disappointed. cuz it woulda been a real masterpiece without that stuff.
[editline]7th November 2014[/editline]
this is going to be a repeat of inception. people walking out of the cinema still on the hype being like 'wow that was so great i did NOT understand it so it MUST have been great and too complex for me! haha!' except this time it actually just doesn't make sense its just convenient space magic
XMen Days of Future Past - 8/10
I really enjoyed it.
Tbh I think skyfall and casino royale are,the best bonds but I've never really liked any of the earlier ones. Not that I've seen them all though
casino royale is my favorite out of the 'new' bond movies but stuff like from russia with love, goldfinger, on her majesty's secret service, the living daylights and maybe golden eye are very good too
I used to hate Casino Royale for being really different from previous Bonds, but then I realized it's better than any other in every aspect.
Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999)
Extremely entertaining. What it may lack in visual direction it gains in soundtrack choices. Honestly, it made one of the most boring subjects intersting to watch, at least for me. Bill Gates is the real gangster.
As for the Bond discussion, I agree that Casino Royale is great. I just wish it wasn't followed up by Quantum of Solace.
Quantum of Wallace was actually not that bad. You people need to rewatch things like "A View To A Kill" and "Die Another Day" to know what dreadful really is. :)

We were talking about 90s-era Microsoft and Apple in class the other day (we watched some of that Steve Jobs lost interview) and that movie came highly recommended. I saw a few clips and it looks to have an interesting style.
