Llewyn Davis was panned? Had no idea. I saw it at a preview screening so I had nothing that could have coloured my opinion but I think it's one of their very best films. Need to see it again.
It received a lot of backlash when it premiered at the Cannes Festival (before releasing being the favourite among the critics, because Coens but ultimately failed to meet the expectations). As a result it was almost completely forgotten at major shows, and it's not a rare thing for me to hear from people considering themselves "Coen fans" that ILD was "a bore".
In my opinion it was a small masterpiece.

Probably have to agree, I'm sure it'll make its way into my best of 2014 list. Really, really great film- not working with Deakins was an interesting and imo positive change too, gave a different feel to the film but one that likely suited the story more than Deakins would have. Fantastic soundtrack, and Oscar Isaac was great. Lots of really nice moments throughout.
Also, who said the movie was panned?

uhhhhh
I dunno, I remember clearly Cannes reactions. Looks like it picked up after full release. But that still doesn't explain the absence at award season.

What source are you using? "Rotten Tomatoes For Kids"?

even though Cannes is a great festival, I think the audience are absolute dorks sometimes.
Why would you yell "Boo" at a premier with the filmmakers there, that's disrespectful.
Even if it was Transformers 4, I wouldn't yell like an imbecile.
Cannes' initial reactions are never anything worthy of note. People pan things all the time, and walk-outs are near-useless as indicators of quality. People walk out of films all the time, because it's a festival. Every minute is precious. If they're not enthralled right away, they likely will not stay. Maybe they had an eye on a film by one of their favourite directors, that happens to start 45 minutes into the film you're about to go see. You'll leave it to go see this other one you have expectations for, etc. Plus, as you say AK'z, there's a load of tossers at Cannes :v:
Interstellar 8/10
great movie, although stained by some poor writing.
Cannes audience is the fucking worst.
also
Guardians of the Galaxy - 8/10
Fuck you movie for making me tear up for a walking tree.

Of course, it's amazing how ambivalent the reactions at Cannes sometimes get. Best example is 1994 and Pulp Fiction when it was booed by some, and later managed to get Palme d'Or to everyone's surprise (mostly Tarantino, because he and rest of the people expected Trois Colours: Rouge to sweep everything).

that ending sequence though
him dancing made me burst into laughter, and made me wish I had gold member so I could have it as an avatar
movie was a 9/10 for me
Just watched The Judge 2014.
I loved it.
Soylent Green.
6.8/10
Has its charms for a 70's movie but I really think that the acting was quite bad even for a movie of that age.
But IMO the movie deserves a remake and have the whole story rewritten.
I decided to watch every single MCU movie in order of release (or close to that if it makes more sense).
Iron Man: 9/10
Fucking amazing start to a fucking amazing universe.
The Incredible Hulk: 6.5/10
Much, much better than I remember it. I think most of my bad memories of this film are actually from the 2003 film which was just terrible. I liked how they skipped his origin story and the film actually started months later. Edward Norton is not even close to Mark Ruffalo though.
Iron Man 2: 6.4/10
I knew what to expect which made it a lot more bearable, but drunk Tony Stark, Justin Hammer (that other arms dealer guy) and Ivan Vanko (Whiplash) made me cringe. Other than that it really wasn't all that bad IMO.
The Consultant: 3/5
Fun little 3 minute short film about the end of Hulk featuring Coulson and some other guy I should probably know.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer: 4/5
Short scene showing Coulson being funny, cool and badass. In that order.
Next up is Thor.
I continued my MCU "marathon".
Thor: 7.5/10
I actually really like this one. The only thing that seemed really off was the romance subplot. Jane Foster is literally the first girl he runs into [sp]more like she runs into him hehehe[/sp] and him falling in love with her comes out of nowhere. I liked Loki's origin story though and the destroyer was fucking awesome. The humor was also great in this one. (This drink. I like it. *SMASH* ANOTHER!!)
Captain America: First Avenger: 8/10
It starts of very slow, but gets a lot better later on. The villain is interesting and entertaining as fuck.
The whole movie actually gave me old school James Bond vibes. The eccentric villain with the hidden base in the alps, the endless supply of faceless minions, the spy gadgets, the infallible hero. It was awesome all around and filled a hole Skyfall left empty.
Agent Carter (One Shot): 5/5
The first bigger budget One Shot. Instead of one scene this is actually a full blown (albeit short) story about what happens a year after Captain America and makes waiting for the Agent Carter TV show much harder.
Avengers: 9.9/10
SO AWESOME PURE BLISS
I love how they even managed to get most Avengers fighting against each other at some point. HOLY SHIT CIVIL WAR IS GOING TO BE AMAZING!
Item 47: 4/5
Also a much longer and fleshed out short than the two shorter Agent Coulson ones. It focuses on two characters that are completely separate from the movies which is a nice change IMO and their story is fairly entertaining to watch.
Next up: PHASE TWO
Sin City 2
I didn't hate it like a lot of people did, I honestly found it quite watchable although its a huge step-down from the first one. It's not as brutal, and the story is much less tense and ruthless. Visuals were stunning, I just love the whole black and white thing going on. The greenscreen was mostly good although there were are few times in which I was like "nope, that looked terrible".
I'm just pissed that it didn't live up to expectations, feels more like a sort of lower grade imitation of the first film.
overall I'd say 6.5/10
youre going to get well soon, dont worry about it
I already heard that Captain America 1 is considered a bad movie, but I never understood why. It's one of my favorite Phase One movies. What's wrong with it?

IMO, way too many corny elements for a movie that gets its charm from how down to earth it is. The first half has that 40's feel and it works really well, but the laser guns and the cheesy evil plot ruined it for me

That's interesting. My thoughts on it are literally the exact opposite. I didn't care about the 40s feel but really like the crazy villain and everything that comes with him.
I'd say it comes down to a matter of preference and, even more important, expectations, if you hate or love that movie.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1
Honestly really enjoyed this one. Most films get worse with sequels, but I'd say The Hunger Games has actually been an exception. There were still a few cheesy/bad scenes [sp]when Cannis gets throttled by Petar I lost my shit it was so bad haha[/sp], but found that it seemed to be a bit smarter than the rest.
7/10
Just saw Coherence and it was pretty neat
I totally think that it would be a great film to go in blind on though, like, if you watched it without looking anything up about it or even knowing what the genre of the film is it would be a pretty cool experience
Hungry Games Part 1. 7/10.
Really liked the 2nd movie, was really well paced and overall enjoyable.
This movie dragged its feet so much and it didnt really go anywhere. Now i knew this was just a setup for the grand finally in Part 2 so im not going to hate on it too much.
i managed to enjoy the corniness of guardians of the galaxy and liked it about as much as the winter soldier, both of which i see as the best marvel films
The winter soldier kinda bored me.
The winter soldier kinda bored me.
My issue with it is that for a movie called Winter Soldier, it's sure lacking of him.
Is there any photoshop version of Rocky Balboa thats instead say Rocky VI. You know, like the other 5 movies were titled.
why does nobody like captain america 1
I think it's an okay movie, just that the time period makes it have a completely different atmosphere to the other Marvel movies. Like, even Thor is set at the same time as the others, so despite the fact it's about mythological beings and Asgard and things like that, it's still grounded in the same time period and feels attached.
I haven't reviewed a film in a while tbh, I've seen a lot but haven't watched anything worth putting into words tbh..
until now:
Starred Up
HoLY FUCk, now this my friend... is a film.
Prison films NEVER, and I mean never do justice to what in my mind, it's really like.
This film is so raw, that it makes Shawshank Redemption seem like Alice In Wonderland.
Now I'm not one to bullshit you, but this analogy is absolutely crystal clear. And now after I successfully predicted Shia Laboof will be the next best thing, here we have another guy who is so potentially the next greatest British actor it's unreal. This is Jack O'Connell, a young dude who just is the shit m8.
You thought you saw it when you watched Bronson?
No.
Grab this and you'll know what I mean immediately.
This film has well and truly crushed my soul.
At first it was like:

but now it's like:

This film needs eyes on it immediately. Britain keepin' it real for once.
this is among the best of this year m8.
i loved Starred Up and ever since i saw Jack O'Connell in Skins i knew he could be extremely amazing if he was written for other parts.
Jack O'Connell is good. He was in This Is England, and played a very good villain in an early Fassbender film, Eden Lake, a horror about a couple who go to a lake for a holiday but a group of chavs attack and hunt them down- O'Connell's character being a genuine sociopath. Very good flick. Can't wait to see Starred Up, missed it in the cinema run, it's out on DVD but still quite expensive so idk. I'll catch it soon cos I know it'll be great.

why would you want that for the worst rocky movie
why would you want that for the worst rocky movie
Worst Rocky or not, i like them all to have matching cover art on my shelf.
As Above, So Below
how do these movies get made - 2/10
