For having an incredible story and deep complex characters.
you said that the video doesn't go against the points people are trying to make, he points specifically that they enjoyed the story
how can you enjoy a story that is nothing but tropes and rehashes?
again, what is there to like in Avatar besides the pretty pictures?
i wasn't referring to solomon but to like three other people who just said avatar is decent despite it being shallow and that it's pretty to look at and the sci fi tech stuff being neat. it's also not a non-stop barrage of loud noises and explosions.
don't ask me how i'm supposed to enjoy the story because i didn't either.
why?
Because it's neat. I like space. I want to journey to other planets and see alien species. I thought it was really great that this paralyzed guy got to go somewhere he'd otherwise never have a chance to go. It was especially neat that he got his legs back and he found someone that loves him rather than being stuck alone in a wheelchair on cyberpunk earth trying to white knight on girls that get slapped by their boyfriends.
edit:
I was genuinely moved by the story when I saw the movie on the big screen. Not so much now.
Loved Gone Girl. So tense.
how much money it makes is immaterial.
this also doesn't matter, better avatar than transformers...
Of course it matters. 3D is a thing now. Highly funded movies with more effects than content are bigger than ever.
Look at the general opinion about what a good romance is. They'll more likely tell you Titanic than Rust and Bone even though a good and healty romance is a natural one.
Success sets trends. Trending media influences the viewers. Not saying it's a vicious cycle but movies with honest heart in them should be more successfull than manufactured string pullers.
Tell me honestly: Do you want more Jack and Jill or more Enemy?

There were no other points made besides "alien atmosphere" which is again a thing of design and the stuff they put on screen and yes it really did very well with that.
How am I supposed to reply to people when their reply to the basic point that everything but the pictures was awful in Avatar is "but it was decent" ?

people saying "it was decent" are probably saying that because they don't want to write up a huge post that goes over every single that was good and bad. but from what i can personally say about the good things about avatar is that the images were very nice, the story and theme at least stayed consistent and true to itself, it wasn't a barrage of explosions and deafening noise, and the movie was held together in an effective way that kept things movie forward at a brisk pace.
it's not very good at all but i think those points should make avatar at least "not dog shit".
Any good bank heisting movies out there?

You know, I gave you a constructive response as to why I liked Avatar. Don't get butthurt and complain about how OMG EVERYONE IS ONLY MAKING ONE POINT !!!! when it really just isn't the case.

Inside Man-- Spike Lee's foray into mainstream hollywood is a surprisingly strong and smart one
Saw "Into the Woods". Solid 7/10. The only thing I really disliked was the wolf.
Yeah, the effects are nice and all but that's more what the point of the movie is. It's a really fantastic looking movie, it's just not too great in the other departments.
Speaking of which...
TRON: Legacy - 8/10
I may be overrating this a bit, but oh my it's a visual treat that looks wonderful on Blu-Ray.
"A digital frontier to reshape the human condition."
TRON: Legacy succeeds because of its deft hand in combining analog humanity with digital perfection. The brilliant visual design seamlessly combines CG fantasy with real (or at least real-feeling) sets - impossibly grand and glossy buildings and machines with just enough smudges and scuffs to seem real. Several shots look as though they were shot through a camera, or filtered as though seen on an old CRT screen. For a movie that's nearly five years old, the effects still look wonderful. Sure, Clu looks a bit odd from time to time but the seams rarely show.
Not just the effects, but nearly the whole of TRON: Legacy builds off this idea of the interaction between digital and real. This is explored seriously - the philosophical implications of this digital world weigh heavily on Kevin Flynn's mind, and choosing to prioritize the grid over all else had disastrous consequences on his family life - and humorously - while a life-or-death battle rages in the End of Line club, the DJs' (a cameo from Daft Punk, who provide a wonderful soundtrack) only reaction is to spin a higher-energy track. But for all the grandeur that the grid offers, it ends up feeling hollow - just like Flynn's digital fireplace in his all-too-clean home, it's a poor substitute for the real world. And though it may not hold a candle to the bright digital cityscape of the grid, the organic warmth of the real world is a truly wonderful place.
True, this movie is far from perfect. I may be overrating it a bit, but my oh my it's a visual treat that looks wonderful on Blu-Ray. The boardroom politics are flimsy at best (the movie doesn't really get good until Sam enters the grid), and the character development is spotty.
All in all, TRON: Legacy is a wonderful exploration of a fantastical digital frontier.
And now I want to watch Interstella 5555 again.
Just watched James Cameron's Avatar for the umpteenth time. Loved it, solid 8/10 can't wait for the sequel next year.
the sequel is actually still gonna happen?
oh boy.
gimme TRON 3 please
Gone Girl
9/10
So since it went a bit under I'll repeat:
Go watch The Drop
After rethinking it I'm correcting myself to 9/10
Captain America The Winter Soldier, 8/10
Pretty darn good! Besides GotG and The Avengers, this is the first marvel movie I've seen since Ironman 2, and it was very surprising. I'm excited for the upcoming marvel movies, which is something I never thought I'd ever say.
the sequel is actually still gonna happen?

It's a threequel. Releasing 2016, 2017, and 2018
[editline]3rd January 2015[/editline]
Filming this year in fact.

Also, Neil Blomkamp supposedly was working on a secret Alien film

plinkett reviews are solid criticism just told by a comedic character
X-Men Days of Future Past: 7.5/10
Pretty neat-o. Not a big fan of the X-men but I really liked a lot of this movie.
The Interview
Okay lets get something clear here. This movie is not a 'good' movie. You shouldn't watch this movie with any anticipation that its going to be actually 'good'. Its a Rogen/Franco movie. They're trying to cram the word "butthole" as many times as they can into about 2 hours. That being said I watched it with a bunch of friends at 1 in the morning last night and although it was completely terrible, I enjoyed and laughed at some of it. They at least get props for it being a pretty original concept.
3 or 4/10
Anyone seen The Theory of Everything yet? Just came out in the UK and apparently it's really great
[editline]3rd January 2015[/editline]
The Interview was pretty much exactly what I imagined in my head the first time I read "Seth Rogen North Korea spy movie"
[editline]3rd January 2015[/editline]
There was some good stuff in it and some awful shit
"The Babadook"
8/10. Good story, but it could have been scarier.

Are you kidding? It's at least a 6/10. It was a great barrel of fun.
Any good bank heisting movies out there?
Not just a bank heist movie, but I would give Heat a watch. I still need to buy it on bluray one these days. A solid 9 out of 10 in my book.
Haven't seen it yet, but The Town may be a good one to watch.
The Town was pretty good, watched it last night. It might not fully satisfy your desire for heisting though.
The Interview was a stupid movie, but damn it all if it wasn't fun.
Big Hero 6 - 6/8
great visuals, good humor, and fantastic animation
Are you kidding? It's at least a 6/10. It was a great barrel of fun.
And this is why I usually tend to not bother with numbers
with 4/10 I say its below average, which it is
I hate the IGN scale
Yeah everyone apparently hates the IGN scale but everyone uses it anyway
Yeah everyone apparently hates the IGN scale but everyone uses it anyway
It's a shame, but it's become so commonplace that you can't really deviate from it now.
