Inside Llewyn Davis Fantastic film and a fantastic soundtrack. This really shows what the Coen brothers can do, and Oscar Isaac is fantastic as the titular role. Very, very excited to see what he does in the future after giving a performance like that in the infancy of his acting career.
I tried that one but by the end I was craving the credits and didn't give a toss about the character. Odd isn't it.
The Drop (2014) After seeing it recommended here several times, I decided to check it out. I think the film was good. Even though it's slow, it's also relatively short (106 minutes). It may not be the most exciting crime story ever, some characters were undeveloped, but the banter was really enjoyable. Tom Hardy did great, I don't think his performance range will ever stop impressing me. From Bronson to Locke, from TDKR to this, it's like he's a new person every time. One thing I figure I should add. Don't ever watch the trailer for this movie, the way they cut together the scenes immediately gives away a good chunk of the movie. That's probably their most glaring mistake.
I saw Edge of Tomorrow/ F5. F9. F5 Holy hell took me off guard. Best Hollywood action movie in a long long time. 8/10 for me. The dumb ending without much of an explanation is what keeps it from being a 9/10 for me though.
Gone Girl - 9/10 Loved it. First half and second half of the film feels completely different. Story was great too. Only thing I wasn't happy with is [sp]the ending. I really wanted to see that psychotic bitch jailed.[/sp]

I recently watched 'Night Watch' and 'Day Watch' Rating: 5/5 Awards I Made Up to Give to the Film(s): Most Creative Use of Subtitles in a Foreign Film I went into these films thinking it would just be another terrible fantasy movie in the modern world. I'm glad I was wrong. The mix of action and comedy (my two favorite things in film) was balanced perfectly. If you haven't seen it, go watch them on Netflix for US customers.
just gonna blanket-spoiler this post [sp]I had heard all the jokes before seeing it ("Bryan Cranston is great but then dies and we have to put up with his boring son", "they cut away from all the action until the last 20 minutes" and so forth). I definitely feel you on how his character was. Cranston is insanely devoted to figuring out what really happened - his research both before and after the incident show that. He also has a strong emotional connection - he blames himself for his wife's heartbreaking death. (Incidentally, his anger stands as a strong contrast to Watanabe's almost reverent fear of the kaiju - and they don't even have a proper scene together) By contrast, Aaron doesn't have a connection anywhere near that strong. When they ask him about what he knows, it's a one-sentence "I don't know much, that was my dad's thing" and that's all. Plus the series of events in which he encounters the monsters border on comedy - "Hey honey, I'll be in Hawaii tomorrow and then San Francisco from there" SMASH CUT TO "General, the monster is en route to Hawaii and then San Francisco!" Although the slow-paced, tense MUTO reveal was excellent, I wonder why they didn't even attempt a reveal with Godzilla. It was just sort of "he's here now" and we see his spines hanging out behind the ships. It felt pretty weak.[/sp] This is definitely true, I think I just said that because the flying MUTO perched on a collapsing building reminded me of Otachi and I thought "man, I could be watching Pacific Rim right now" Definitely not a fair comparison, though, just me getting frustrated at the lack of action. [editline]4th January 2015[/editline] The effects were fantastic, I loved how Godzilla moved
I kinda feel like if the movie went with [sp]Cranston and Watanabe being the main characters, with a conflict between them about the kaiju, whether godzilla was a balancing force or just a force of nature, would've made for a much better film.[/sp] Because honestly, I loved all the action sequences, the [sp]Godzilla roar was fucking incredible[/sp] and it just felt good to watch, but the characters flop so badly to the point that it's almost transformers level. personally I'd say 7/10
Whiplash Oh. My. God. Oh my fucking Christ. This film works on so many levels that it's incredible. Jesus. I still have shivers on my spine it's so good. I'm speechless making me unable to mention what this film did right, which was basically everything. Soundtrack? Phenomenal, every jazz fan will have eargasm after eargasm hearing it, that's obvious. But what struck me at the very beginning was narration - it's simple and straight to point. Five minutes in, literally like ten lines of dialogue and you already know what's going on, what are the stakes there and what defines main characters - shit that while made by some other directer would take about half an hour. Cinematography? Stunning, surprisingly. So many beautiful shots but not in a way that would took you out from what's important - the music. And the cherry on the top - the duo. Miles Teller is already among Hollywood's favourite young actors and this film proves why. He gave a hundred percent in his performance and I'm waiting what this kid will show us in a few years. But yeah, everyone and their mother won't focus on him, because J.K. Simmons steals all the spotlight. This film might make him big, and I'm talking AAA big, like Oscar league. He's menacing. Every minute he's on screen you're clenching your fists because he's simply fucking scary. It's indescribable. You simply have to watch it. I've yet to see Birdman, Inherent Vice, Foxcatcher and few others main players from 2014 but I'm fairly convinced that this was the best film of the year. If somebody would've told me that a scene with a guy playing drums will be more tense than most if not all what action cinema presented in the last 10 years, I'd have laughed. It's 10/10, and if not, it's really, really close.
yeah, I watched this based on your recommendation and it was every bit as good as you said it was. maybe not quite 10/10, but it may as well be.
No Mans Land (Nicija Zemlja) (2001) Fucking hell what a great film. It's a war movie without much shooting and action in it, but it was so well acted. And god damn it was funny at parts too, but horribly depressing at others. It also does a good job at not vilifying either the Serbs or the Bosnians in the Bosnian War, but instead shows the complete uselessness of the UN during the war 9/10, I fucking loved it. Highly recommend you watch it if you're interested in all in the balkan wars
the imaginarium of doctor parnassus well that was pretty good. then again i usually enjoy terry gilliam's films.
The Guest: 8/10 This movie rules
The Guest (2014) At first I was confused why it'd be compared to Drive, I think I saw such a comparison here. And then it hit me like a fucking speeding truck. It's a good movie, even if predictable. It's one of the movies that continue the crazy traditions of the '90s. If you're in the mood for a story-light movie with a good pay-off, you should check it out. [sp]I think I saw the KGP logo somewhere in the movie before the reveal, but I'm not sure. Did any of you spot it or is my mind playing tricks on me? It's just a geometric shape, after all.[/sp]
killer joe: 7/10 I have no idea.
Time Lapse 7/10 Timetravel movie and a surprisingly good one for what looks like a real low budget movie. Good for what it is and a plot that doesn't end up being too trivial althought some tropes are pretty bad.
the guest - 8.5/10 adding on to what everyone else has said, there were a couple cheesy moments during some of the action scenes, but overall, really good movie with an awesome soundtrack
A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) Wow, I've been on a roll lately. For this one I wanted to write something like "the Taken series will never stop impressing me lel", but this movie is above that. It's a cheap detective drama, I don't think it even qualifies as a thriller. It's predictable. The only remarkable casting choice was David Harbour. The way they cut the final sequence sucked. And still, it's not a "Taken" movie, far from it. It has a solid story, plotlines don't just dry up and disappear. It tried to have a message that I somehow managed to predict an entire hour before watching the fucking movie. I heard it on Fringe, "When you go out for revenge, dig two graves". The film didn't have shitty shaky-cam sequences or fake fighting scenes. In conclusion, they tried. If you need some background noise for two hours, this is the choice. It won't put you to sleep, but it's not exciting either. I have mixed feelings about it. Speaking of predictability, what the fuck is up with movies lately? I think I've used that word too much in my recent posts. Today's writing doesn't surprise anymore. I was thinking about checking out that Pre-something movie, it was about a comet in Latvia or some shit, but, sadly, I forgot the name. Is it any good?

It did a great job building tension and utilizing the main plot device for pacing. I'd also call it 6.5 or 7/10. Great effort, and generally a smart and engaging movie. Still, though, why not [sp]Put a piece of cardboard or something in front of the camera, idiots? Easy solution to everything. No extraneous information to fuck things up or create causality issues, and you only remove the cardboard when you have deliberate information to send. You avoid that entire (irrelevent, in the end) problem of being a slave to what the photos show. Also, idiot, of course your bookie is going to have a problem with you winning tons of money. Don't place all your bets in one place, and always seed a few bad bets in there to make your wins look plausible. Goddamn, a 12-year-old could handle this situation better.[/sp] Whiplash - 10/10 What an excellent movie. There is no way you are not standing up and cheering by the final scene. I love how pared-down the movie becomes by the final act. You think it's going to be some Step Up-ish bullshit or formulaic sports move that just uses the core subject as a vehicle to tell a love story with a bunch of family drama. You have all those things in the beginning...but Andrew's obsession grows and grows and just shoves everything else out of the way until it's just him, the drums, and JK Simmons. It's a total inversion of what you expect. Intense, engaging, memorable...I fucking loved this movie so much. If it doesn't make you feel something, you are dead inside. Enemy At The Gates - 8/10 When you jettison all the "true story" shit and take it at face value, this is a pretty good movie. The opening 15 minutes are just gut-wrenching. I know the love story was shoehorned in and could have been abandoned altogether, but I have a massive crush on Rachel Weisz and I can't bring myself to bitch about her inclusion in anything. I love Ed Harris and Jude Law in anything. Even if the rest of the movie never matched the opening, the ongoing duel between Harris and Law in the ruins of Stalingrad was wonderfully compelling. There was a lot of visual stuff in the staging of the duels and how they were shot that I really enjoyed, too. Watch it as a movie, not a documentary. Man, I really need to see The Guest. I remember being interested in it, but never got around to seeing it in theaters. The second round of word-of-mouth is really gettin' me pumped though.
The Gambler: 3/10 Mark Wahlberg starring as Mark Wahlberg with some vague character motivation for excessive gambling. I haven't seen the original with James Caan, so I'm not sure if it is better in that. Omar from the Wire and John Goodman seem to enjoy their time in this movie, they're certainly the highlights of the movie. The script is weird, like the pacing is strange and the dialogue ranges from pretentious to cringe. Absolutely forgettable too, I can't remember anything except for Mark Wahlberg running for three hours straight. Not worth the price of admission.
dear lionsgate [t]http://images4.static-bluray.com/movies/covers/113029_front.jpg[/t] please dont make a habit of putting rotten tomatoes on your front covers thanks
They just want to tell people about their trophy [t]http://i.imgur.com/KcaWG2P.jpg[/t]
it's on other lionsgate movie covers too though [editline]7th January 2015[/editline] which is really really bad. we should not give power to rottentomatoes
Blade Runner, original cut I believe - 6/10. I suppose it's my fault for going in with the expectations that I did. I've heard absolutely nothing but good things about this film for years and years and years and years. Finally decided to sit down, watch it. It was okay. Just okay. I can definitely see for the time maybe it was impressive or something, but right now it just doesn't do it for me. And I don't mean the sets, make-up, or what have you, that shit was dope. It's the inability for the narrative to engage me on any sort of level after the first 30 minutes. I was completely disinterested in the happenings of the plot, but again that's probably my fault because I was expecting this movie to really make the cogs in my head spin. No such luck. I intend to watch the Final Cut very soon, as evidently it's the only cut that Scott had all the control over.
Ishtar, 8/10 So hilariously bad that I honestly can't hate it.
RT is what everyone in the world uses the get an idea of if a movie is worth watching so it makes perfect sense.
it's a ridiculous system. a movie can get 6/10 and still get 95% on tomatoes. [editline]7th January 2015[/editline] even metacritic is not that bad

I guess you can say that if something has a high fresh percentage, it means it's a safe bet to say it will be serviceable. However, relying on rotten tomatoes will make you miss out on some polarizing, interesting movies that get 50% 2/10 and 50% 9/10 or something to that tune.
