Taken 3 (Tak3n) 3/10
Jilted husband's fantasy- [sp]my ex-wfe's husband is a huge piece of shit and I'm a super-skilled person who is beter than him[/sp]
Worst detective on earth who apparently knew everything right from the start and spends his screen time eating or playing with a chess piece or a rubber band because that is obviously some deep symbolism. Possibly, symbolic of his lack of skills.
Let me summarise the movie's general tone with a description of a scene: [sp] Father drugs daughter and hides in her school's female toilet in plain sight for her to inevitably appear at what must be the ONLY toilet in the school before grabbing her when she appears[/sp] Did the CIA teach you the optimal toilet positioning for snatch-and-grab missions, Mr Mills?
An arthritic cameraman who moves more than the people fighting, honestly the action sequences in Paddington were better than this
Things this movie doesn't have problems with
-Murder
-Extrajudicial justice
-Collateral damage
-Assault on law enforcement
-Teenage Pregnancy
Things this movie SERIES has problems with
Birdman 5/10
I really didn't enjoy it that much, i feel like it was a bit all over the place with the plot. I feel like i'm going against the grain here a bit, some people have said they thought it was the best movie in the year. I dont know maybe it went over my head.
I didn't think it was the best movie of the year, but I'd rate it higher than a 5 for the camera work/editing alone
Whiplash - 9.5/10
Wow, what a film! As someone who has personally gone through a similar struggle with my jazz band director (wasn't as insane as J.K but i'll be damned if he didn't push his students) this film really hit home. The scenes made me so tense, especially [sp]when he had the three drummers in the room for hours working on the tempo[/sp]. The finale also was almost entirely perfect. I still don't know whether or not I should [sp]like J.Ks character or despise him. For one, I understand what he's trying to do, albeit he's too extreme[/sp]
Blue Ruin - 9/10
Its like a cross between Memento (storywise) and No Country For Old Men (in style). Pretty great, I'm looking forward to the follow up, "Green Room".
Intouchables 9/10
Gone Girl
?/10
I'm going to need a second viewing, positive feelings generally but it's fucked with my head so much to critique it or applaud it.
Sorry, but I fail to see how you'd struggle to comment on it. It's pretty damn clear what's happening (apart from perhaps the beginning), there isn't really anything to prevent you from forming an opinion.
Gone Girl was astounding. I love David Fincher. Superb all the way through.

Not doubting it's clarity, it was just something to think about. But I'll just have to rewatch it. It was enjoyable yes, but I feel like I should give it another try to get a clear picture in my head of how I feel about it.
I'm just unsure about it, and I'm doing a sensible thing by rewatching it. I get the impression that most people in this thread will absolutely defend the film but I'm not attacking it, I did say before that I was neither praising it nor criticising it.
I hope I'm not coming across as contrarian or anything and I'm just trying to give some sincere thoughts on how I felt about Gone Girl.
Birdman- 9/10 easily the best directed film of the year. Michael Keaton and Edward Norton are fucking astounding in this.
i disagree. i think Whiplash and Foxcatcher have much better direction. Birdman is impressive because of the one shot thing but it's not like they push the boat out with any amazing shots, it doesn't even generate any kind of amazing atmosphere.
Foxcatcher generates this really uneasy mood throughout the whole film, like nothing's ever quite right. An accomplishment of the directing.
12 Years a Slave (2013)
9/10: a painful film about a horrifying but however true story. Hard to watch (the hanging scene had me cringing the whole time), but I was immersed from beginning to end. Great actors (Chiwetel Ejiofor as the main character is fantastic), fine direction and scenario. At times it reminded me of Christopher Nolan's more dramatic films.
Themes/keywords: slavery, racism, nigger, 19th century, Louisiana, plantation, (in)justice, lots of pain.
Oh, nigger is in the historical meaning of course.

Yeah, me too. Maybe I just didn't get it, but it was hardly the best or funniest movie I saw this year.
escape from tomorrow - 5/10
neat little gimmick, but everything about this movie was cheesy as hell, and the story made no sense
giving it a 5 because it was at least entertaining, and some of the stuff made me chuckle
Taxi Driver - 7/10
Finally got around to watching it. Very good performances, especially by Jodie Foster, it's so hard for kids to not act like garbage. It was an extremely good depiction of 70s New York grit and grime, and all the shots from inside the taxi just shooting what life was like back then was cool, especially with the use of lighting. However, a lot of the scenes kind of lacked character imo, like some of them just felt flat. The final [sp]shootout[/sp] (do I even need to spoiler tag?) was extremely lame actually, and goes against all logic of how a gunfight would play out. It really took me out of the movie how unrealistically that happened. Seriously, [sp]one of the clients runs up to Travis to shoot him with a completely clear shot, but when he walks up to him he just shoots him in the arm? And then Travis, despite just getting shot in the arm, manages to use his (admittedly cool) assassin's creed gun with the same arm to kill him?[/sp] I really think it could have been done better. Also, I'm not really making this a complaint because I really enjoyed how the movie established the city, but the first half of the film seemed pretty aimless. Not that I had anything wrong with it though, seeing Travis' loneliness made him a more sympathetic character later on, and I guess you could make an argument that the aimlessness parallels how Travis felt during most of the movie.
Also one question, how did Travis even save up the thousands of dollars to both [sp]buy the guns and send Iris back to Pittsburgh?[/sp] I guess taxiing all day erry day pays well.

My brother actually thought it was alright, and says if you like musicals you'll probably like it.
The Guest - 8/10
Pretty great stuff. Sort of a mashup of Drive, John Carpenter, and The Terminator, this was one cool movie. Some of the acting was spotty, but Dan Stevens knocked it out of the park with his uncanny ability to swap between politely affable and menacingly psycho.
Whiplash was goddamn amazing. That final act was astounding.
I really liked the color gold tone Whiplash had throughout some scenes the movie, very lush.
ill probably go see taken 3. because i have 22 free movie tickets
i saw taken 3
i dont think liam neeson is well?
ever since neeson's wife passed away he's been a much lesser actor than he once was. :(
I did like The Grey though.
it really seems like he's physically very limited now. he's not even that old. even someone like clint has more speed and flexibility. like, I think that liam is not okay. it was very clear from taken 3 that he can only move at a snails pace and can't even, but rather just a hobble. it is actually very sad to watch. he's never been a great actor, but he seems to getting on in his years quicker than he should be
[editline]14th January 2015[/editline]
like, look at him in batman begins, he's able to duel with christian bale. in taken 3 (and apparently 2? i never saw it) he can't run or fight with anybody without 10 cuts a second to hide it. 10 years has fucked him up
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1. 8/10
Followed the book very good even though there was small details missing they still used every scene.
too bad part 2 is shit
Oblivion
It's like Moon
but with more explosions
Liked it
too bad part 2 is shit
Yeah ive heard that. Im almost done reading the rest of the book.
Yeah ive heard that. Im almost done reading the rest of the book.
they focused heavily on the battle at the castle instead of the entire second half of the book and changed around a lot of shit for no real good reason. prepare for disappointment.
As someone who never read past book five that's kinda all I wanna see? A giant wizard war sounds awesome. Is it just not well done, or is it solely disappointing because it strays from the book?
Both.
Whiplash- 10/10
Nothing can be said about this movie that hasn't already been said, it's fucking perfect. It's one of the great slice of life films and easily one of the best music films.
J.K Simmons as you've heard is absolutely mesmerizing. They establish right from the opening scene who his character is, how he behaves and what his motive is. They don't fuck around and make you think he's "not that mean" in a few scenes only to have the movie "trick you" later on. The only exception is that scene at the jazz club when Fletcher [sp] talks to Andrew about getting booted from teaching because of how he treated his students. I knew in that scene that something wasn't quite right. He was reeling Andrew in like a fucking fish the whole time, although as far as Fletcher goes, he was a lot worse in the first two acts, but I supposed he was on stage at the time, so he couldn't exactly freak out. But in the end, he finally got his Buddy Rich. [/sp]
The writing and how things come back later on in this movie is spot-on. It doesn't try to be anything bigger than what it is, but you genuinely care about these characters and how they're going to overcome whatever conflict comes their way. The dialogue scenes in this movie feel very real and unrehearsed. The relationship that Fletcher and Andrew share is one of the greatest I've seen on film because it's so unconventional and it's the furthest thing from black and white. By the end of the film, there really isn't much love between them, and there never really was, but what does grow with them is a mutual respect.
Also, that final drum solo was incredible. The only--only complaint I could think of isn't even that much of a good one, and that's that the film just kind of ends without a big resolution, but I don't think that's what it was trying to achieve. Andrew's story with Fletcher, at least the most interesting parts, are over. You just kind of hope for the best for him, and that's all you can really do in this world anymore, regardless of talent.
Go see this movie. It's the underdog film of the year.
Just finished this myself, I'd give it an 8/10, really good and one of the very best of the year but no 10/10 like so many people have given it. It didn't quite capture me in that way. But I do agree that there's little to criticise. An incredibly solid film all round and two amazing central performances. Really enjoyed it.
Back to the Future Part II - 6/10
Arguably the weakest of the trilogy but still an enjoyable movie nonetheless. Alternate universes in films make for interesting scenes and plot points. Characters and story still very memorable and engaging. Still waiting on my Nike shoes though later this year.
Up - 9/10
Definitely one of the better Pixar films. Lots of emotion within the first 10 minutes alone. Some amazing scenery and visuals round out a hear-filled story with plenty of humor to boot.
Back to the Future Part III - 8/10
A satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. I prefer the old west setting as opposed to the future in Part II. The only real weakness I see is the running jokes from the previous two films kind of wears on you after awhile. Some people may find them humorous however.
I like Part II more than Part III. All the different settings are neat.
Scary Movie series. 10/10.
