Just finished Trance by Danny Boyle.
I'd give it a 9/10 but you see Rossario Dawsons tits and clit so I'm bumping it to a 10/10
branson 8/10
gattaca 7.5/10
White diamond
Loved it. Some Of the nature scenes were mesmerising with the tribal music that worked so well. it was beautiful and troubling and strange and interesting.
A sign that it was great: kept me interested even though it was a documentary about airships, something i have little interest in.
The Call - 5/10
The first two acts were pretty damn good and had a palpable sense of tension but man did it fall apart in the last half hour, turning into cheesy B-Movie horror and a final scene that completely goes against the character of the two protagonists.
Pacific Rim.
7.5/10
Solid enough action, working story, and a fun watch.
Did they actually change the Glados voice from the trailers? Or is it still there?
Fast and Furious 6 8/10
Spring Breakers (rewatch)- 4/5
I saw this on release day when it was in the cinemas and just decided to watch it again. I still think it is excellent and I don't agree at all with people calling it cheap exploitation shlock. I've defended the film before and I think it holds a lot of merit.
I might piss off a few people here but I don't really care, because I just noticed something while watching it. Spring Breakers is basically a Terrence Malick film. Seriously. It's his older youthful rebellious films combined with his beautiful and personal later films. This film is The Tree Of Life meets Badlands in 2013. It might not hold as much symbolism as Malick but I'd still say it's pretty damn close to his works.
Ok with that observation out of the way,
This is the best film 2013 and I don't see it being beat out by anything I know of. Tbh I can't really be bothered writing up a proper review since I've written about the film a few times on this thread but yeah, imo it's outstanding. My biggest complaint would be casting Gucci Mane as the opposing gang leader since his line deliveries were fucking awful and he has a retard voice that you can barely understand. But yeah, still, excellent film with one of James Franco's greatest performances and overall a strong cast- I'm actually interested in where Vanessa Hudgens goes from here on, since she's clearly breaking free (no pun intended) from the whole Disney thing, which I respect I guess.
I also think it's gonna hold as the best looking film of the year- the cinematography, colours, lights, costume design (and actresses)- everything about this film is gorgeous. Korine really steps up his game here in terms of visuals. It holds his usual style in a sense but at the same time you can tell he's clearly watched Tree Of Life a few times :v: (I do know he's a big Malick fan)
It seems like it's a film you either like or hate though, I mean looking at the IMDb demographic it's 14.5% 10/10 and 15% 1/10. Whole lot of hyperbole in IMDb though and it's a horrible community full of trolls who'll just rate something bad because say Harmony Korine directed it or it stars some Disney girls. But there's also people who just kinda missed it I guess and I get that. But imo it's a great satirical piece of filmmaking that deals with things like loneliness, being trapped, I recently read something that gave some interesting insights on how it has a lot of religious undertones. Not sure if I agree with it since it doesn't seem like something Korine would do but it was convincing enough. You can't look at this as Project X, American Pie or Eurotrip or whatever because it's not a film like that.

Also I noticed a few people thought the scene with James Franco [sp]sucking off the two pistols[/sp] was laughable but imo it was incredibly intense- I didn't have a clue what was going to happen or anything, and I found it to be a very powerful scene in that it's a total role reversal, there's the whole femdom thing which kinda ties in with the whole idea of the film, it was really tense and a bit surreal but genius.
[editline]8th July 2013[/editline]
Also I feel Franco deserves a Best Supporting Actor nomination for this film, he was outstanding. And a cinematography nomination would not go amiss.
I've seen trailers for Spring Breakers and posters for it. If what you say is true, the movie had the worst ad campaign of all time. When I see girls in bikinis pulling off heists so they can afford a spring break trip(in a movie titled spring breakers, released when most people are on spring break), the first thought in my mind is that the movie is complete garbage and I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole. The last thing I'd expect is quality acting or writing. All I see is a quick cash in flick. Now I'm insanely curious/skeptical after reading your post. Even if it is a decent film I highly doubt you could call it best film of 2013.
Just out of curiosity, did anyone else here enjoy the film? If so, I might actually be tempted to watch it.
Yea it's 100% not project X 2 although it was advertised like that. It kinda is for the first 30 minutes, but more to wear you down, then it totally changes.
I saw it because I knew it was a Harmony Korine film and through that knew it was gonna be something different. I dunno if I would have been interested otherwise. I'd recommend it but I'd say be openminded and don't view it as trash because if you do it might be all you see.

tbh I feel like this year has been a weak year for bigger films and the only film that rivals Spring Breakers is Mud. Not really watched smaller films since i usually catch up on that stuff a few months-a year (or more) after but yeah. Imo it's one of the best. Hollywood's been pretty shit this year.
Well yeah. Last year and 2011 were big film years, this year and the next is more of a video game year
Hoosiers - 7/10
Maybe I'm just not big on sports movies, or maybe this one influenced a bunch that came later so it seemed hackneyed, but I didn't find this one all that great (certainly not The Best Sports Movie Ever). There were some good character bits (mostly Hopper) but it just felt like a generic underdog sports movie.
Also an 80s-synth score for a movie set in the 50s was a bit jarring.
Imo it's one of the best. Hollywood's been pretty shit this year.
Literally this.
Hollywood can fuck off this year... Let the little'ns rise above them. I doubt the acadamy award stuff will change though. Yet to see any real frontrunner so far.
For you, you mean...
Yeah I suppose, for me. Don't mean to stray off topic any more than this but I sure am looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077, Star Citizen, Rome II, Mirrors Edge 2, Witcher 3, GTAV (hopefully), Watch Dogs and A Machine for Pigs. Not to mention Last Light which relatively just came out.
Saw "Now YOu See Me".
Blahrgh. 4/10
At one point I didn't even care for anything anymore. I think when I realized they hamfisted a car chase into the script. Was already fed up with the non-existing character development.
The film is just too full of itself.

Hated it because the 4 girls are literally retarded. No that would be an insult to retarded people. I don't know.
Red State 6/10 Definitely one of the weirdest movies I've seen, Although i would say its an odd movie for John Goodman
/r/movies has just come full circle. This is outstanding. Perhaps the biggest dicksucking of all time. The kind of circlejerking that only happens once in a lifetime.
[editline]8th July 2013[/editline]
"This needs to be a thing now with different directors. Can someone get on this with tarantino?"
SO GOOD LOL
??? he really likes christopher nolan movies. whats the problem? he doesnt know the dude irl, how is it dicksucking?? the only problem i see here are the comment on it, which are all completely moronic
Just finished Trance by Danny Boyle.

Knew I missed out when it left theaters.
Happy Gilmore 7/10 Hilarious movie one of Adam Sandler's best
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back 8/10 Without a doubt one the funniest movies I've seen in a while

well its more just the circlejerking in /r/movies is ridiculous over like Nolan/Fight Club/Tarantino etc and this just kinda sounds like a self-parody to me. He also says memento is his best film, then when TDK comes up he says HE TOPPED MEMENTO then Rises HE TOPPED THE DARK KNIGHT get your shit str8 poster
I think its funniest to me cos i browse /r/movies and read /r/moviescirclejerk though so yea.
The Departed 9/10
This is the end
solid 8/10, one of the better comedies I saw in past few years.

reddit is a cesspool why would you even consider going there
i usually find /tv/ to be WAY more accurate on films, you've just gotta get used to the 'pleb' and 'patrician' attitude there
i also agree there seems to be a huge circlejerk on Nolan's films. The Dark Knight, The Prestige and Memento are the only really good ones he's made in my opinion.
thing about nolan, he's never really written anything that caught me in the heart, he's just a bit more of a mechanical kind of director.
It's kind of if Tarantino never made Jackie Brown, that kind of thing. That film made me greatly respect the dude even though he'd already established his style.
I just doubt Nolan could ever pull away from big conceptual ideas and just focus on the writing and tone.
have you seen following??
not yet. maybe i'm dumb.
also I'm watching The Terminal and just realised that trekkie girl is actually Uhura in Star Trek :O

I personally find /tv/ to be pretty insufferable because they're so afraid of being "plebeian" that they're aggressively contrarian. Any film with less than 75% on RT is declared a flop and the blunder of the century, while any film with more than 75% is audience-pandering dreck. They're still circlejerking about how terrible TDKR was, and would rather discuss their waifu's feet than acting ability.

If you haven't seen it already, I suggest watching Insomnia. I really enjoyed that one, and it's a far cry from the high-concept style of Inception or The Prestige.
Kapringen (a Hijacking) 8.5/10
written and directed by Tobias Lindholm, who was the co-writer in Jagten
and you can tell because this movie is like a brother to jagten, but still offers a completely new and fresh experience
i was just heartwrenched during the last shot, which was a very meaningful way to end the movie.
the movie is about the hijacking of a transport ship and about the negotiations that goes on back at the office with the CEO whos trying to save them, and the movie keeps switching back and forth in a balanced way throughout the movie and it really does feel like youre being warped into 2 different worlds
An intense rollercoaster of human emotions on such a realistic level i genuinly got disturbed at one part
prolly as good as jagten imo
fuck jagten, ruins lives :(

Reddit is good so long as you stay away from the shittier (usually the bigger ones tbh, /r/movies is a default sub so it gets lots of people who dont really care about films a whole lost posting- hence nolanjerking)
I use /r/truefilm for actual discussion mostly, it's one of my favourite subreddits. Far better community.
