Godzilla (1998) 0/10
The only good thing about the movie was Jean Reno. Pretty much during the entire second half I was just praying for the god damn movie to end already.
Why did this get panned by critics? Any particular reason for the polarized opinions I'm seeing in this thread and on IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes?
Because they don't understand symbolism. This is literally the reason why people are saying it sucks. They also most likely haven't seen Valhalla Rising and have never experienced this type of film before.
The whole part with him being a smug twat dancing in the streets and shit should have been cut from the movie.
Hell no, I want a Symbiote Spider-Man spinoff, that shit was hilarious.
The whole part with him being a smug twat dancing in the streets and shit should have been cut from the movie.
I always thought that, as unfitting as it was, it was funny as hell
could work in another movie maybe, idk
Finally got around to watching How to Train Your Dragon
7.5/10 - Started a bit slow and I didn't think I'd like it but when the introduced Toothless I grew attached. I love his dopey faces and everything. Hope they put a little more character in Toothless though, which I felt was a little lacking. The trailer for the second one looks like it'll be great!
shame is great and i love it's rendition of journey to the line

did it better than zimmer tbh
saw Blue Jasmine. an incredibly sad character extrospection wonderfully acted by cate blanchette, as an unhappy upper class socialite whose world collapses around her, leaving her with the difficult choice of facing reality or actively refusing to, clinging to an ideology that ultimately leaves her totally unable to cope with where she is. it's a depressing study of people who are fundementally 'broken', people who have nothing to offer the world who's only goal is to climb financially by getting hitched. their sole attraction in the world being wealth, being totally blind to anything else by whoever has it. it really paints her as someone who doesn't even realise how unhappy she is, and will be, no matter what. the money she strives for secures her so that she doesn't even need to face any problems. and when it's taken away, it leaves behind the same person, only unable to blindside themselves to the world with wealth and status. but inability to blindside themselves aside they still try to, never really accepting the new world around them. she is so very delusional and incapable of happiness with or without wealth it is truly a sad movie. not in a way where bad things happen to a good person. in a way where bad things happen to, not a bad person, but a cruel, delusional and fundamentally incapable person.
Gran Torino: 10/10
Just... that was an amazing movie
The Shining
9/10
Such an awesome movie and after reading some really in-depth analysises it just feels more awesome to watch it. It's like a puzzle, beside of that the whole movie has such a great atmosphere.
I didn't understand the shining. Was it a horror film? I watched the whole thing with a bored expression on my face.
It's a horror film it's just not scary

How do you even...
I didn't understand the shining. Was it a horror film? I watched the whole thing with a bored expression on my face.
Calling the Shining a horror movie is not right, it's not even that scary. It's really more intruiging and bizarre. At first I found the movie a bit overrated but after rewatching it and reading about it, it got more puzzling. If you watch the movie and take it at a face value, it's a story about a haunted hotel. The real meaning is told through a subliminal narrative which is only distracted by the obvious and somewhat generic horror story. If you analyze the movie for a bit there are many odd references and characteristics that reappear constantly.
Calling it a simple horror story is not enough, there is far more hidden beneath it's apparent surface.
There is a nice analysis of a guy called Rob Ager. It's just amazing what how many details this movie has. Also this is only for people who like to read more into movies. Also Kubrick is well known encrypting different narritive storylines with subliminal messages.
Plus I don't think Kubrick intended the film to be a simple horror/scary movie. Like junker154 said, it was a hell of a lot more intriguing and bizarre than 'scary' but that's why I love watching it over and over again. It's always fun to look into Kubrick's direction and handling of the film too. Like, the movie isn't Care Bears and I do know a lot of people that get really scared by watching it but its strong focus isn't because it's "ohmygodhowscary" (because movies like that tend to age really badly) but the nature of a haunting and a man's descent into madness.
Everyone said how scary Rosemary's Baby was but it's not that 'scary' these days. However, the movie goes beyond that and into how it truly feels like to be alone, miserable, in constant fear and pain and knowing that everyone in the world around you is somehow against you and/or lying.

I remember seeing that in theaters and crying my eyes out when Zilla died. :(
I should totally rewatch it and ruin my memory of it.
Tbh all the best horror films are the ones not done by horror directors
What about Carpenter?
oh yeah forgot about him. Carpenter is very good. Aside from that though I honestly can't think of any director who does only/mostly horror that actually makes legitimately great films, not just good horror films. Wes Craven maybe but I've not seen any of his films so idk. From what I hear he's good.
I kinda think that American horror is terrible anyway, even most horror classics, since they're never anything more than average in terms of direction, acting or writing. Halloween, Friday The 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc are all pretty weak. I maybe credit Texas Chainsaw as having good direction since it has a constantly tense atmosphere. But a good horror film is generally not a good film overall imo. Its just that horror is a weak genre most of the time. I know that sounds silly since every genre has more bad than good but I mean even the supposedly good ones aren't very good.
The Wolverine
pretty decent to start with but my god the plot is an awful mess
also [sp]wait...TWO HANDS!"[/sp] possibly one of the dumbest things ive ever seen
Evil Dead owns but they're funny and over the top and work as fun b-movies/comedies not as legit horror films. imo at least.

Maybe it's because directors who only do one specific genre of film aren't that great except for a few exceptions. Craven is good but he just kinda makes fun of his own movies now and I don't like Scream that much anyway. Yeah I know what you mean about 'horror is a weak genre' because most of the time, I just think it's shallow. You need to have more than just 'scary' and even if it is, in like 10 or 20 years, the scare factor goes away. Also, I find it hard to watch a standard horror flick over and over because all it had going for it was the scare factor and since I'm used to it, it's not that fun anymore. Maybe it's fun if I watch it with a group of friends who are scared easily but like I said, not that fun when I'm alone and the movie's been watched a couple of times. You need extra layers to it and that's when you get better memorable movies like The Shining, The Thing, Evil Dead 2, Jacob's Ladder, Rosemary's Baby, The Fly and etc...
Gran Torino: 10/10

Not really worth a 10/10, but still good.
Kick-Ass
7.5/10.
I loved it. It was a fun movie. I liked the dad-daughter relationship between big daddy and hit-girl. I wish the movie showed it more. Hg fighting was fun to watch. I didn't like the romance between kick-ass and that girl. I think the plot could have been better.
Million Dollar Baby
8/10
The 2nd part of the movie came unexpected to me and was just depressing. I found it weird [sp] how that german boxer was still allowed to box even though she broke the rules all the time. Also it was weird how the movie implied that Maggie lost, even though she would have won through DQ. And could Franke really have walked in kill a patient and walk without anybody noticing? Guess those details were not important enough?[/sp]
Matrix
8/10
Matrix 2
7.5/10
Matrix 3
7/10
I liked the idea of the matrix but I didn't really like the whole machines being octopi thing. I wish there were less scenes dedicated to the real world and zion. The romance between neo and trinity felt cliche in matrix 2 and 3. I liked how abstract and mysterious the first was. The second revealed more secrets about the matrix so the mystery was gone a bit. The 2nd part had some charismatic characters though. For some reason I didn't really enjoy the fights. Maybe because they were always fighting random guys besides smith and the fights against smith were just boring and unsatisfying because he is unbeatable and neutral. The 3rd movie had the most real world/zion scenes and it felt more like a generic post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie. I enjoyed the trilogy overall but I feel like a lot of potential was wasted.
Sunshine (for the millionth time) 10/10
Oh god the soundtrack. John Murphy + Danny Boyle is an amazing combination.
Fucking masterpiece.
Starship Troopers
8/10
Holy shit that was so fucking cool
one of the most badass films that I've seen
[sp]MEDIC[/sp]
I just watched firefly.... It's brilliant!
If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater
Only God Forgives - 6/10
I was hoping for so much more but I was disappointed. Characters were left very shallow, and the plot left rendered meaningless. It could've been a lot better but I feel it was rushed. But the cinematography was stunning.
population 436 - 6/10
eh it was sort of interesting but nothing great

the effects in that movie own
[editline]27th July 2013[/editline]
oh and [sp]how every main charcter ever dies a terrible death that also owns[/sp]
Starship troopers is great because it's so shitty and you know that the makers of it made it that shitty on purpose. Does that even make sense? It does to me. It's so stupid in an ironic way that it's brilliant.
Did they make sequels?
i saw both of the sequels here is a tip dont
Starship Troopers 2 is about a 3/10. It's a predictable, generic space horror.
The third movie is probably about 5-6/10. It takes itself even less seriously (and the acting is pretty terribad), but I think in this case that sort of works, since otherwise I don't think it would be watchable. Like, when's the last time a dictator was caught singing on stage?
If you had to watch one, watch the third.
There's also a Japanese-made CGI spinoff that also introduces the mech suits from the books, and that one was pretty good, actually.
