Thanks I'll be sure to check it out!
mud - really nice southern drama. this and killer joe have made me really like mcconaughey. the child actors were great too. pain and gain - bizarre. i don't know what i expected though. it was portraying these really serious crimes and murders comedically - something you could maybe do with fictional events, but not something based on a true story. mark wahlberg's character, the protagonist of the film, is still literally on death row irl. that's fucked up. it's not really a comedy, not really a drama, not really an action. it's not really anything. it's just a weird, fucked up movie with no real message. michael bay has a weird sense of humor. the movie even goes out of it's way to remind you half way through that it's still based on a true story. about real victims and real murderers. so why is it presented as a pseudo comedy? why is dwayne the rock johnson a kookie gullible jesus freak coke addict body builder? that guy's not even in jail anymore. he did some bad shit and you're portreying him like a cartoon. wtf? just weird.
C'mon sequel!
Nah I don't think it needs one. [editline]15th August 2013[/editline] On the other hand, just watched Stalker. The scenes were simply beautiful.
Why are you bias against tv shows
because this thread is about films not tv shows. make a thread about rating tv shows if you want to rate them watched a few films the past few days-- Audition- 3/5 A solid and interesting flick that takes a turn about half way through, starting off as a kinda quirky film about a guy trying to find a new partner in life after finally accepting the death of his wife. As it goes on there are hints that things aren't what they seem, but the final part of the film just got surreal as fuck and weird and dark. Strong acting, excellent cinematography and direction, a plot that keeps giving and you have no idea what it's going to give you next. The Host- 3/5 This wasn't as good as I expected since I've heard a lot of hype about it and it won fuck tons of awards in the South Korean film fest. Brilliant acting from the main star (also starred in Park Chan-Wook's Sympathy For Mister Vengeance and Thirst), impressive cinematography, very well constructed and paced plot. However I wasn't massively engaged the whole time and I think despite good pacing and a well thought out storyline the film struggled with tone. Either that, or I just didn't appreciate the humour. There were parts that were legitimately scary, some stuff hilarious, some stuff just weird and some stuff really dark but obviously trying to be funny. I dunno it was just too much for me. Also I give it a lot of points for [sp]naming the film The Host, giving the idea that there's a virus to the viewer right away, before even watching the film, then spending 3/4 of the film thinking the main character is infected and not knowing what's going to happen- then learning there's no virus at all and it's just made up by the media. Great way to play with the audience.[/sp] There's apparently a lot of social commentary in the film as well. Like, A LOT. But I didn't really get anything from it, but it's mostly South Korean political commentary and I know nothing about their state of affairs so. I enjoyed it but was ultimately disappointed. Martyrs- 3/5 I thought I'd seen this before but I think I missed the first 30 minutes or so since I only started to recognise the film when [sp]the girl kills herself and Anna discovers the secret passage[/sp] Interesting take on the revenge horror genre, although i'm still not sure if they went the right way with it. I'm still deciding if they went to far or didn't explore enough. It's meant to be existential but I dunno I didn't take a massive amount out of this. I have to give credits to the absolutely fantastic special effects as well. Well acted, nicely shot, reasonably well written and the first half was a very good take on the whole revenge film but I wish they expanded on it more. At the same time I feel the second half was lackluster because it didn't go deep enough at all. I dunno. I feel the film scratches the surface for both halves of the film. Neither half was bad, I understand what the second half was doing as well as the how and why. I liked it but it's not amazing. May watch it again at some point to try and dig deeper. Kick-Ass 2- 3/5 Funny and dark, I don't think it's quite as good as the first but it's not bad either. The superhero team thing sucked and was really lame (Although I guess it was lame on purpose, but it was still cringey as hell a lot of the time). Donald Faison was great tho. The names were all dumb as fuck and ok they're often funny the first time you hear them but they become stupid and retarded the more times they're said because the initial joke is gone. Some good action sequences and the film touches on emotions a surprising amount- moreso than 1. I give it a point for that. Imo the best parts of the film were when both the supervillian and superhero teams were out of it. Neither side were particularly good. Exploring Hit Girl's human side was well done and I enjoyed them, as well as furthering the relationship between her and Kick-Ass. I wish the film focused more on her because her parts were some of the best. It explores concequence more which I liked and the film is willing to go dangerous places and take risky turns, but they work. Oldboy (rewatch)- 4/5 Caught this in the cinema (The original version) last night, as it was being shown to remind us how good it is in wake of the remake :v: I'd seen it before but not in ages. So well written, greatly acted, brilliant cinematography, it's such a great movie. It's reminded me to start exploring South Korean cinema, I've got a bunch of films, directors, writers from there on my list. I look forward to exploring the scene since it seems to be great. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, New Orleans (rewatch)- 4/5 One of Cage's best performances, imo he deserved an Oscar nomination. everyone thinks of Cage as playing to extremes, which he recently said he does do, and as extreme as his character Terrence is, it's all about that subtleties that really sell his performance. The way he walks, how he uses his eyes, his little gestures, his going from off to on, so many little things. I've not seen Keitel's Bad Lieutenant but I know it's very different from this. I honestly think Herzog and Cage were the perfect team for this film. No one understands how to show the descent into madness like he does and no one can play it like Cage. Very very good film.

But I didn't really get anything from it, but it's mostly South Korean political commentary and I know nothing about their state of affairs so. I enjoyed it but was ultimately disappointed.
Yeah the movie has some of those lying around. Like[sp]when the scientists poured the chemicals down the drain, it was inspired by a real life incident when a Korean mortician working in a US military base poured some chemicals down the drain. Also Agent Yellow=Agent Orange. The Korean government and protesters/activists are inspired by the protesters in South Korea during the presidency of Park Chung Hee and Chun Doo-hwan. [/sp] You get some political commentary against the USA and the South Korean government which is also inspired by mostly during the turbulent times of the 1960s-80s. Inept and mistrusting governments, suspicious use of chemicals in warfare, environmental issues and times where America just didn't give two shits about South Korea. Hell, North Korean authorities loved this film because of its 'critical look' of America even though the director denied the film as an 'Anti-American film'.
The impossible - 2/5 Very good sfx most of the time. To be based on a true event the movie was cheesy and fake as shit.
I watched The Host dubbed and it is by far the worst dubbing job I have ever heard.
never watch dubs
Purgen - 7/10 Meh, cheesy ending and stupid characters but I liked the film in the end.
I saw Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. The plot is a bit wishy washy but its there. Character development for the decepticons is still non-existent and the big bad guy is all in all a bit lame. [sp] Also, they killed Ironside off half way through and he was the only Autobot other than Optimus I really liked. [/sp] My biggest gripe with this movie was the way it was a 'MURRICA! fanwank by Bay and despite the entire world being threatened personally and the media catching wind only America sends forces to stop the whole planet being turned to slaves. Would have been cool as shit to have the Russians,Chinese, Europeans to send some sort of aid. There were a few fairly obvious twists and one I expect your average film critic would have spotted right away. The blond cow that substitutes Megan Fox is just as dumb and unbearable to watch and the bit at the end where she talks to Megatron was...ugh. I liked the movie overall, and the way it portrayed the human dudes as being slightly less useless and not just a source of explosions was a step forward. From a enjoyment perspective I'd give it a 7.5/10 and a recommendation you watch it if action movies without brilliant plots light your fire.

It's on par with Battleship in its shittyness.
never watch dubs
I agree for live-action films, but animations? Sometimes dubs are better, or maybe it's my inner child speaking through nostalgia.
I tend to try out the dubs for animation. If everyone has a ridiculous attempt of an american accent i switch immediately. Then again i did watch all of dragonball and the voice acting wouldn't be anything if not cheesy.
Are you kidding? It's on par with Battleship in its shittyness.
Battleship is OK. None of the transformers Movies even comes Close in okayness.
i didnt see battleship cos it looked terrible but i am 100% confident it is offensively bad
Battleship is OK. None of the transformers Movies even comes Close in okayness.
The first movie was actually alright.
Evil Dead [sp]I prefer it over the original.[/sp] To be fair they are both very different movies. The original is a shoestring budget cheesy affair while this one is a relatively high budget hollywood gorefest. The main pull of this movie is obviously the gore and they really deliver; most of the effects were real, which is nice, and they looked great but the few that were CG looked fine too. I actually cringed at a few scenes which is rare. I had heard that the characters were shit but apart from the neckbeard and the blonde (who were indeed shit) the other three were okay in my books. The heroin addiction thing provided a nice setup, some decent character development between the brother and sister and gave the nurse something to do. Overall I give it 7 severed limbs out of 10.
I agree for live-action films, but animations? Sometimes dubs are better, or maybe it's my inner child speaking through nostalgia.
depends films, no. original audio with subs is best way. tv series, definitely go with dub. i can only stand asian VAs for so long.
honestly it really depends the brazilian dubs on shrek were pretty badass, though the biggest problem is how not every joke works when not in the original language (a lot of translators do a great job in adapting the jokes though) however, the brazilian voice actor for shrek died after the 2nd movie. I really dont remember if the 3rd one was actually bad, but I just couldnt enjoy any of it without the same voice actor
Are you kidding? It's on par with Battleship in its shittyness.
Blame me and my lack of refined tastes. I'm a sucker for films with dumb action and semi-coherent plots. Saying that I really don't think I'd like Battleship anyway, I mean even I can recognize that is shit.
so we changed the thread title to say "no tv shows" but left "april" in there :v:
Man of Steel: 9/10 Best Superman movie ever. World War Z: 2//10 I give it two points for it actually being pretty damn intense at times and its unique take on the zambies. But I'm a fan of the book. That pretty much says it all. The Colony: 3/10 It had a good initial premise and some notably decent cinematography at times. But its a case of massively wasted potential and laughably dumb writing. Oblivion: 6/10 I did enjoy it but I feel its one of those films which spoiled its twists in the trailer.[sp]The bit where Jack encounters the other Jack was pretty cool though. But its grand reveal and why the aliens were invading was completely lacking and bleh.[/sp] Pacific Rim: 8/10 This film was simply fun. Would watch again without skipping a beat. Alan Partridge Alpha Papa: 6/10 There were some parts which were absolutely fucking hilarious but its humor did get pretty annoying at certain times (felt very forced).
How old are you?
I watched Elysium It was a really solid movie, but I feel like they could have done a lot more with it. For a film that had so much viral marketing showing off the good life of Elysium, I feel like they barely showed any of it besides [sp]that one house party and when spaceships are crashing into the grass, which gave the Elysium a total runtime of like 4 minutes[/sp] All of the characters didn't really have any depth to them, except for maybe Frey. I just think that Elysium was much more standard and "going by the books" than District 9 was. The [sp]facial reconstruction scene[/sp] was rad though.
I can tell people who liked Pacific Rim just by their smell and looks, you either are a wimpy teenager or a dumbfuck jock boy or at least have the mentality of one of them.
Say what you want about Pacific Rim but you can't deny that it's an above average summer blockbuster.
If you judge people on a level where you question their intelligence based on the honestly made films they watch then you should probably seek help.
I can tell people who liked Pacific Rim just by their smell and looks, you either are a wimpy teenager or a dumbfuck jock boy or at least have the mentality of one of them.
Haha, get a load of this guy.
They Live 8/10 wasn't as bad as Prince of Darkness, so in my mind it's pretty good
I can tell people who liked Pacific Rim just by their smell and looks, you either are a wimpy teenager or a dumbfuck jock boy or at least have the mentality of one of them.
maybe we should introduce gmf''s No Kalluah rule to this thread as well Sympathy For Mr Vengeance- 4/5 The first film in Park Chan Wook's Vengeance trilogy (Oldboy and Lady Vengeance being 2 and 3), it's a strong film but not quite as good as Oldboy. It's a really good story but I felt a little bit lost at times. It might have been to do with the fact that some Korean text wasn't translated, some of it felt like it might have been important. I loved the idea of having a deaf-dumb main character, it was really interesting and it was used as an interestsing plot device on several occasions. My favourite part of the film was definitely the cinematography, which imo trumps oldboy, as great as the film looks. Mr Vengeance is a bit more stylised, and uses a lot of longer takes, although not the kind where you move the camera instead of cut- more set the camera on a tripod and let it run. The framings just brilliant, lots of shots that give characters plenty space to move and see everything, as well as the shot itself create a mood. The acting's top-tier stuff, it also stands up as one of the bests parts of the film. Worth noting that these long takes on cranes and tripods (lots of beautiful crane shots in this) make every kinetic movement even better. The shot when [sp]he wakes up to realise he's been robbed and his kidney stolen[/sp] is outstanding and one of my favourites in the film. Also, a great ending. If you liked Oldboy then you definitely shouldn't sleep on this, I'm going to watch Lady Vengeance tomorrow.
So is "no tv shows" a joke or do we need a "Rate The Last TV Show You Watched" thread? (Sorry to talk off-topic)
