a critic and user review aggregate is worse than a pretentious music reviewing site lmao okay
at least pitchfork can be funny.
Nah.
They try really hard to be funny and smart but they always end up sucking their own dicks instead.
How can a review aggregator be funny anyway?
That's like comparing Something Awful to Rotten Tomatoes.
rotten tomatoes is bad too.
do you even try anymore
rotten tomatoes is bad too.
Very poor form.
you people take hot beverages and review sites too seriously..
why do people even care about what other people think about an album just form your own opinion jeez

Go read the reviews. Most people seem to dislike it because it doesn't sound like Merriweather Post Pavilion or it's "hard to listen to". Which is hilarious, because the band itself said they weren't going to make anything like Merriweather Post Pavilion, and that it would be hard to listen to. :v:
merriweather is good.. but nowhere near as good as Sung Tongs.
That's just my personal experience, it's still "euphoric" and all that.. I saw the video to "My Girls" and it was way too obvious.
Before that they weren't compared to the Beach Boys, now they are and it's weird.

Maybe people these days read "inaccessible" as bad, when they should instead figure out what's going on.
Not heard the new one though.

MPP got them so much exposure, we have people who don't realize they never do the same thing and get angry when they aren't the modern version of the Beach Boys. ODDSAC and Centipede Hz are probably a testament to how AnCo's never been afraid of doing whatever they feel like.
It's hard to describe their new album, but I'd say it's like Strawberry Jam mixed with Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished and Here Comes The Indian.
Well I dunno the new Swans album is immensely inaccessible(considerably more inacessible than anything AnCo ever did, actually) and I've seen nothing but praise for it.

Critics fawned over AnCo all the way back in 2004 though, MPP was only a commercial breakthrough and not a critical one.
animal collective are mainstream.
swans are not.
It got 9/10's, critics went fucking nuts. I don't even think its nearly as good as Sung Tongs or Feels.
In other news, of Montreal is releasing a new album called "Daughter Of Cloud" containing unreleased work on October 23rd.

By that logic shouldn't they actually be praised for breaking free of the boundaries of their mainstream success and doing something wildly different instead of just going even more mainstream and accessible?
Also, [sp]Animal Collective isn't mainstream lmao[/sp].
AnCo is pretty mainstream.
Chicks dig Grass, Fireworks, My Girls, Brothersport etc.
They're in that weird "internet mainstream" zone

I just knew that would happen. They release an album slightly less poppy than MPP and people complain as if MPP was their definitive sound, when really they change sound from album to album. Most of the complaints seem to be about how dense it sounds but all the critics are probably listening with headphones. It's much less hectic played on speakers to 'air' it. This is still AOTY for me though.

So what you are trying to say is that the album is bad then listened to through headphones, but it's good when you hear it through speakers?
That's not making any sense. At all.

73 is a good score, I don't know what you're complaining about

yes and no, also you're wrong.
I think there's a bridge between mainstream success and non-mainstream.
Rihanna/Lady Gaga/Coldplay is the top end of the scale, but Animal have only just got on that bridge. They don't seem like a "commercial" music making group anyway.. so yes I'm surprised that it got that much success.

I'm not saying it's a bad album when listened to with headphones, it's just really dense and there's so many sounds going on that it's a bit overwhelming when listening that way. The band have said that MPP was very much a headphone record because that's the way they wrote and recorded it. This album was different because they went for a more live approach and listening through speakers allows for there to be that space so it's not all up in your face.
I'm hearing that Centipede is similar to the Strawberry Jam album they did, that true?
Should I be excited about dr dre's new album that is overdue even though im white or am i just a wigger.
i think i first heard about Detox on an Eminem album maybe 10 years ago?
detox was indeed being talked about probably all the way back on 2001 and has since been brought up on the eminem show, encore, and relapse. I don't think they ever said it on recovery but still
I'm hearing that Centipede is similar to the Strawberry Jam album they did, that true?
It's definitely closer to Strawberry Jam than it is to MPP. Mainly because it's less sample-based and actually has live instruments. But the production and theme (being the radio signals and such) make it pretty unique. And it takes a few listens to wrap your head around, lots of stuff happening at once. I'd say if anything it's closest to Here Comes the Indian because it's pretty hectic, with much poppier songwriting though.
Favourite tracks at the moment: Moonjock, Rosie Oh, New Town Burnout, Monkey Riches, Amanita
