With HBAO on the shaders change to match the angle of the sun, weather, so forth. The shaders also look more crisp and match what they're shading better.

AMD cards will probably run it just fine.
Also the HBAO+ I believe works full res by temporally smoothing between two alternating sampled half res AO passes.

HBAO+ was a new thing Nvidia added to their drivers.
