I spent most of Friday at work trying to argue that Drive is amazing and Django is overrated. (my boss actually compared Django to Monty Python)
Django was great but it was one of Tarantino's weaker films in anything outside of pure entertainment value imo. The script wasn't up to his usual standard and the characters were pretty two dimensional, the acting was all really good but yeah it's got nothing on the wit, characterisation and unique scripts and dialogue of films like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and as a director it's not as impressive as his earlier films. It's stylish but it falls to the likes of Kill Bill, and it's smart but it falls to Reservoir Dogs. The plot is interesting, but not as much as Pulp Fiction. Christoph Waltz is also literally playing his character out of Inglorious Basterds and Carnage- the witty, kind of weird, well spoken charming German. Drive is a 10/10 movie imo, though. I absolutely love Refn's directing overall (Bronson is fucking amazing- need to watch the Pusher films, I Valhalla Rising is like the most boring film ever but it's beautiful to watch), but especially in this film. His stylish shots work so great with Gosling's subtle (or not so subtle, when the times come :v:) performances along with the soundtrack, and I just fucking love how beautiful the lighting is. That scene in the elevator is outstanding, and all the neon and that just is beautiful The film's both surreal and hyper-real at the same time, it's like a real life fairy tale it's awesome as fuck I could talk for ages about just how good Drive is but yes it owns, and if you don't like it you suck
