No, we do. Some people just don't understand the difference. Usually, in the US, you need to be 16 to open a checking account with a parent or 18 to open one without.
debitcards do work online, what are you talking about. Its the same as a credit card without the credit
Not all debit cards. I have a Maestro. Doesn't work on the internet. I used to buy MasterCard prepaids, but then I got PayPal.
Strange, in Canada: Debit card = Can't by anything online. Can't purchase anything if you have insufficient funds Credit card = Easily buy things online. Can purchase things even with insufficient funds Debit-credit card = Like a debit card but you can buy online
The only reason I'd ever get and use a credit card would be to start building a credit rating

Which is super-good for people like me, can't dive deep into debt. Otherwise it functions exactly the same as credit card.
PaySafeCard is fucking amazing, it's easy to buy because we have PayShop fucking everywhere and it takes like 30 seconds and BAM isntant online money
I remember when I got my own Visa Debit back when I was 14. Absolutely destroyed my life savings near instantly. Wouldn't recommend you get one if you haven't learnt to budget. But hey at least I could buy shit for my friends online and get a profit out of them. We're all adults now and some of them still don't have credit/debit cards.
Man this is a weird thread to pop up exactly when I have questions about these. If I buy a visa prepaid card, link it to my paypal account, and then try to use paypal to buy something from Japan in Yen, will it work even if it's a domestic use only card? Does paypal act as a proxy in those regards?
Anyone know how to get cash out of one of these cards? I was given a $500 card and I'd rather have it in cash than only being able to use it at certain locations.
I would make an alt on paypal and send the money to my main one.
Anyone know how to get cash out of one of these cards? I was given a $500 card and I'd rather have it in cash than only being able to use it at certain locations.
Buy $500 with it :v:
Before I got my hours cut I was really looking at getting some prepaid credit cards. I don't want a REAL credit card because I don't trust myself, and don't want to take that risk with one. Sure wish I could afford to buy a 50 dollar one or something, I have a lot of things I want to buy :(

Pre-paids are kind of silly unless you're buying them as a gift for, say, your children. Get a Visa/Mastercard debit; pay for all you want and don't worry about over-withdrawing. Every commercial bank has them.
[editline]6th May 2013[/editline] Why not get a debit card instead then?
If you're over 18 your bank can stick a very expensive overdraft onto your debit card, mines £10 per day if you're even 1p into the negatives
Mine's $35 for an overdraft. Something charged my account by mistake which put me about $0.02 in the red which added a $35 fee. Then I stopped at McDonalds because I thought I had money and that was a $5 meal with another $35 fee. Though I called my bank up and got them reverted.
In Australia: Eftpos = bank account Debit card = credit card without the 'credit' Credit card :)
I have a debit card, but I cannot use it for instant transations. I've gone down to my credit union (There's the problem, probably) and they said I HAVE to get a credit card for online purchases.
I've used my VISA Debit Card for the past 5-6 years in shops, online, ATM's...

[editline]6th May 2013[/editline] Why not get a debit card instead then?
I have a debit card, if you mean bank card, then yeah, I have one. I know that the TD bank in Canada or at least Saskatchewan has theirs so that people can shop online with them, they work as credit cards as well. But I go through a bank that doesn't offer that, so I'd have to either set up paypal with my bank account which sucks because it takes so long to process payments that way, or buy prepaid cards.
do these things even exist outside the US? I have never ever seen a prepaid card
do these things even exist outside the US? I have never ever seen a prepaid card
they do.. pretty big in alot of countries.
they do.. pretty big in alot of countries.
Finland doesn't really have any pre-paid cards, I think. Well, except for Paysafecards. Even then, those are more like paper receipts with an ID on them, but they still can be used for buying hats for TF2.
Fucking love prepaid cards. Terribly convenient for wasting money on often useless stuff on the internet. A while ago I had some left over money on a prepaid card, so I decided to get some music and an app or something for my iPod. There wasn't much money left on the card, so I spent a while deciding on what to get, and when I finally decided on what to get, I got it, then checked the balance on the card. It hadn't changed. Since iTunes doesn't (or didn't, not sure how it works now) charge the prepaid card like a debit card, it treated it as a credit card and left the remaining balance on the card. So I took advantage of that and pretty much got to get a bunch of free shit from the itunes store. Unfortunately, I lost that iPod and when I got another one I used the same account to try to buy some stuff with an itunes card, and when I redeemed the card all of what was on the itunes card paid for the shit I got for "free" :v:
If I have a $100 Walmart gift card, can I buy a different pre-paid card for the same amount from Walmart?
If I have a $100 Walmart gift card, can I buy a different pre-paid card for the same amount from Walmart?
Yes, if the register won't let the cashier do it then a manager can do it for you.
I don't think they'll give me $500 cash back :P I want it in cash so I can in turn deposit it into my checking account to add it to the sum of money I currently have saved up to purchase more parts for my car online. Most autoparts sites don't accept American Express.
I think there is a website where you can sell giftcards. Obviously you wont get the full $500
NEVER EVER buy one of these: Or probably anything on the same rack as them. My mom got my bro and I these, and little did she know, they had all sorts of hidden stupid fees, including fees to simply "cancel" the card.
I buy Vanilla Mastercards and Visa giftcards here in Canada. They do me pretty well with almost anything online. I also have a titanium mastercard from money-mart, except they have a $15 monthly fee if there is any money at all on it(even $0.01), so emptying it fully online is extremely tricky and near impossible.
anonymous money transfers woo
