You people (who are criticizing ayn rand ITT) didn't actually read the books, you opened them up with a bunch of preconceived ideas that weren't substantiated in any way and then rejected it 10 pages in because it doesn't fit conveniently into your naive concepts of right and wrong that have been pounded into your head by society since your born.
I'm open to an honest, logical criticism, just not "Well she sucks because she hates the poor, and mommy says that's not nice cuz they are less fortunate than me "
the only reason you people read ayn rand is because of bioshock
we were all thinking it
someone had to say it

ha.
that was good.
Y'know, it's quite refreshing to see Facepunch locked in literary debate.
Your next task is to compare Plato's Apology to Twilight.
If someone manages to give some solid proof that Plato was influenced by Stephanie Meyer, I promise I will formally kill myself.
Hop to it.
And I probably won't read Ayn Rand. I think I'll stick to Irvine Welsh right now. If Ayn Rand DOES just do right-wing monetary circle-jerking angular-faced rapists, then, well, Irvine Welsh is refreshingly different. He does right-wing monetary circle-jerking angular-faced rapists, but ironically.

Ah, but time is irrelevant when concerning Plato anyway. To him, Time is a perfect idea applied to an imperfect world, rendering a time machine useless. A time machine could not exist in re, only in intellectu, because it's an impossibility, to create something of perfect nature, in an imperfect world.
DENIED.

yeah but i built a time machine in my basement proving plato wrong and since stephanie meyer's ideas regarding vampires are wrong that must mean that she and plato have the same ideas regarding everything.
circular logic BITCH.
the writing is a little.... archaic
Fix'd.
Also: it's a great read, and it's a nice stepping stone into the realm of real philosophers. Once you read this, read Fountainhead, then you'll be prepared to move into Nietzche(sp?) and Kafka.
Listen, you are a pretty cool guy, but get the hell out. It's obvious you haven't read anything from Ayn Rand, and by the marking of that statement, you have no idea what Objectivism is about either. Get educated, then come back and troll.
ayn rand is an objectively bad person
lol
Ayn Rand is the egotistical writer that makes her work seem more important than it is, right?
I personally like Stephen King
Although he is the author of the only books I've read
The banning of the personal pronoun is a novelty that gets old fast. Although it must be admitted that it was quite a clever idea.

I hadn't really heard of Ayn Rand before I had begun reading Atlas Shrugged, but after 500 pages of "I AM GOOD BECAUSE IM A WORKAHOLIC INDUSTRIALIST AND UR BAD CUS UR A FACTORY WORKER" I begun to tire of her type of writing but also of her seemingly naive understanding of capitalism and the world as a whole.
Things won't go your way just because you're young, greedy and intelligent.

Ah, but how do you know your time machine really does travel through time? What if you'd inadvertently built a machine which just deceives you into thinking you've travelled through time, when really all it does is alter your perceptions?

considering that he's read the book you can't really dismiss him by saying pfpffffffffff
maybe you got the book wrong?
I really liked atlas shrugged, it being my first rand book.
Personally though, i thought the speeches were a bit too long, but whatever.
The philosophy is interesting too.
And who gives two shits if people that go to starbucks and consider themselves to be clever and artistic read these books.
It's not like all gamers are smelly and live in their moms basement, even though some are/do.

oh no, you've done a bad thing now
I didn't say he got it wrong, I said if he thinks that's the only point of the book, he's vastly mistaken.

Then maybe you could tell me about some of the other major themes..?
Then maybe you could tell me about some of the other major themes..?
If you really actually are interested, then I suggest you read some texts on Ayn Randian philosophy. Things by Leonard Piekoff which goes deep into the meaning of liberty bla bla bla and those other fields, or Aesthetic Theories, which goes into Ayn Rands philosophy on art.
"I hate Ayn Rand"

yeah but this is a book discussion thread. If the other themes are as big in the book as you say, you shouldn't need to direct him to scholarly articles just to point out what they are.
I read Anthem a few months back. It was a great book. Although I must agree with most of the other people here in saying that the main themes were most certainly individualism, capitalism and the dangers of communism.
I haven't read Fountainhead yet, but Atlas Shrugged is one of my favourite novels. Irrespective of whether you agree with objectivism or not, it is an interesting read; besides, there's no such thing as a right or wrong philosophy.

Why not?
Why would I have to put it into shitty words, when (if he really does care) there's tons of authors that write eloquent essays on them.
You're just on your period honey.
