Western front gets too much attention. Turkey, Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and even Japan was in the war too.
Yes, but I posted to recommend a book, *not* to show ignorance....
My great-great-grandfather fought in WW1 for the Tsar in russia and from what I heard from his friend's relatives, he was shot 3 times and managed to live through the war and past the russian revolution and died shortly before russia went to war with germany in WW2.
Western front gets too much attention. Turkey, Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and even Japan was in the war too.
The Germans were also trying to start a Southern US Front, but I guess the Mexicans didn't find that at all feasible. Anyways, my personal interest in WW1 comes from my high school history teacher who specialized in that particular time period. She used to say that it was the point in time when the past and the future collided. You had old school trench warfare, horses, swords, etc in the same war as planes, tanks, and other technological wonders. On the grander scale, you had centuries old empires and colonies giving way to republics and autonomous countries.
I wanna ask you guys, anyone know where I can buy/watch/find this documentary? http://natgeotv.com.au/tv/apocalypse-world-war-i/ The ww2 version of this documentary was freaking awesome.
Looks like it hasn't come out yet, there is a preview for it though: Yea, the WW2 one was very good, I hope I can say the same for this one.
Are the modern pictures staged, or did they sort through a bunch to find some photos that matched?
I'm thinking a little bit of both. The machine-gun one matches too well, though the one with the groups of soldiers sitting for a photo seems like something any group of soldiers would do for a photo and thus why it matches.
It's amazing that the ideals of the Bolshevik Revolution didn't just sweep through the former Central Powers.
Pretty much every single other country hated the Bolsheviks from the get-go. They were all empires at the time, and therefore staunchly opposed to communism in all its forms as it meant the death of imperialism (at least, in the pre-Stalin days). The Civil War almost certainly would have been a landslide White victory if the other countries supporting them hadn't been, y'know, still fighting a war at the time. That, and Lenin was focussed on getting Russia (and after, the USSR) on its feet and fully engaged in communism first, before focussing on other countries. Although they encouraged other communist organisations, they didn't provide too much direct assistance as things were going tits-up at home pretty much constantly. I think spreading the ideology worldwide was fairly low down on the list of priorities.

Though both times of course the rebels won, and the restis history
I feel like nobody really realizes it matters that US joined World War One, especially on the side of Britain and the others. But then again France...

But then again France...
I don't think it really mattered if the US went in or not. Germany was on it's last leg on 1918. Maybe if the Americans didn't enter the war would have gone on to 1919, but I still think Germany would have lost in the end. Too much political issues at home and the Allies were advancing little by little anyway, especially with tanks that Germany never really put much thought into for themselves. On one hand, the Allies still sent formal armies in where as in Spain, it was volunteers whom most had no military training at all and a lot of the Republican forces were at odds with other Republican forces, especially the anarchists and the communists, where as the Fascist side was united against them.
Are the modern pictures staged, or did they sort through a bunch to find some photos that matched?
They were staged. As well, if you're looking for an interesting piece of media about WWI, check out "The Harlem Hellfighters" by Max Brooks. It's a graphic novel entirely in Black and White, and is really good. Some good documentaries include PBS's series they did back in the 90's (my grandfather just gave me his VHS set of it, fantastic stuff), and WWI In Color.

Funny how history repeats itself eh?
My great grandfather on my dad's side was a soldier in Austro-Hungary's Ukrainian Sich Riflemen legion and my great grandfather on my mother's side was an officer in the Russian empire. So they were basically fighting eachother, sucks that I don't know much beyond that.
A horrible waste of human life that helped create World war 2 the worst war in history, only 20 years after the great war. Here's a good World war 1 series I watched back in march it's also in colour too and restored somewhat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_BHhOAOLH4
I've got a question I've been wondering about for awhile: Did the Germans of WWI ever use tanks as frequently as the British did at the time? When I think about it, I've only ever seen or heard about tanks being used by the allies.

The Germans themselves built tanks, but only one of the series of tanks they built saw combat (the A7V) and only 20 of these were built. The Germans did capture a ton of Entente tanks which the bulk of their armored force consisted of.

Germans never learned, in WWI, to mass attack with armored units with infantry as support instead of vice versa. Unfortunately for the world 20 years later, they learned that lesson all too well.
