Damnit this is hard...
1) The Scorpions. Huge hard rock career that only got better with age, and my main inspiration to pick up the guitar in the first place.
2) Thin Lizzy. Another classic dual-guitar band. Phil Lynott remains one of my favorite singers ever.
3) Avenged Sevenfold. Got me into metal, and I love the fact that every album sounds like 3 different bands made it. More dual guitars. Sensing a pattern?
4) Bullet for my Valentine. All the metally shreddy guitar work with the stupid growl vocals kept to a minimum.
5) Slipknot/Stone Sour/Corey Taylor in general. Guitar work is usually cool, but the songwriting is what really keeps me interested.
6) The Offspring. After they grew up a bit, I found a lot to like in the songwriting.
7) Alice Cooper. This requires no explanation.
8) Alice in Chains. Invented grunge, awesome (former) singer, etc.
9) Queensryche. Most of their stuff is okay, Operation Mindcrime is godlike.
10) Rise Against. I like them alright, most of the guitar work is just power chords, but the rhythms are catchy and the songs generally well written.
Honorable mentions:
Three Days Grace, Shinedown, Sum 41, Rob Zombie, Sevendust, Killswitch Engage, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, The Killers, Foo Fighters, Here Come The Mummies.
Honestly I don't like to compare band of completely different genres. I just cannot compare Daft Punk to something like Megadeth. However I can compare Daft Punk to something more similar, such as Justice or DATA. I'll just try my best to compile a list.
10. Foo Fighters - Absolutely wonderful. My choice for alt/hard rock.
9. Tenacious D - What can I say, nice hard rock with a mix of humor.
8. Iron Maiden - They are what got me into the Heavy Metal genre.
7. Alice Cooper - Not only is his music good but he also helped Dave Mustaine with his drug addiction. It's also my mom's favorite artist, so extra bonus points.
6. Judas Priest - Great music and without him rock and heavy metal would never be the same.
5. Black Sabbath - Also a rock/metal pioneer band.
4. Daft Punk - Why not?
3. Queen - They made many hit songs such as "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions". If that isn't good enough for you, Freddie Mercury is literally my favorite vocalist.
2. Megadeth - I'm not a huge fan of thrash, but these guys alone made Thrash Metal one of my top genres on last.fm. If that isn't proof enough that I love them I don't know what is.
1. Neutral Milk Hotel - Listen to "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" and then ask me why.
1.Porcupine Tree
2.Ayreon
3.Yes
4.Neal Morse
5.Transatlantic
6.Rush
7.Pink Floyd
8.Spock's Beard

Coldplay is my absolute favorite. Nothing could change that.
Wilco is a fantastic band, they actually first wrote the TF2 Engineer song "More Gun" then valve altered it.
I feel that The Beatles are a bit over-rated, but never-the-less great.

in no order whatsoever:
Mastodon - Love the guitars and the drums, took me a while to get into them but I've been hooked ever since.
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Very original, over the top band. The live performances are probably the most energetic and crazy ones out there.
Brutal Truth - Still not LOUD enough, still not FAST enough. Richard Hoak is the fucking man.
Converge - The vocals can put most people off, but I personally don't mind them. Really energetic music.
Electric Wizard - Fuuuuuuuuuuuneraaaaaaaaaaaaaaal... lopoliiiiiiiis... heavy as shit. Their current drummer is kinda meh live, but the heavyness makes up for it.
Rush - Classic, seen 'em twice and their musicianship never ceases to amaze me.
Meshuggah - Some may say it's chug chug chug all of the time (which is somewhat true), but the complex grooves create a unique atmosphere. Incredibly tight live.
Opeth - Great songwriting, lots of contrast. Mikael is an awesome vocalist and guitarist.
Protest the Hero - Very good technical metalcore, fairly accesible for whate they play.
Today is the Day - Extremely underrated experimental metal. Each of their albums has a different twist, ranging from melancholic, slow songs to hate-ridden bursts of grindcore.
No order.
