This actually got me excited for the Avengers film, cant wait.
Got back from this movie just now; not the greatest movie, but I still thought it was good and liked it. Kinda/almost fell in love with Hayley Atwell.
The thing that bugged me the most, it felt to me like the guys from X-Men Origins did all the special effects.
The whole Motorcycle-Through-Explosion-Clouds is so freaking overused.. I did like Chris Evans though and I hope we'll see some Winter Soldier in The Avengers.
I agree. Both of the effects in those movies were not very believable.
The only real thing in the movie that bugged me that I could think of so far, is that most of the jokes weren't funny, unless it was some inside joke from the other Marvel movies.
The finest looking dame in all the world.

I went to see this last night, loved it. But the coolest part was some bros from the local comic shop brought in some free books, but you had to answer trivia questions to get them, I got one for answering "who is Captain America's Sidekick?"
So basically I payed 8.50 and got a movie and a twenty dollar book.
Captain America sort of looks like Toby McGuire...
I watched it, and it was alright. The first half of the movie was pretty good, when everything was pacing itself, but the second half felt really rushed. I mean, when they're not even bothering to show you actual scenes of them beating HYDRA and instead settle for showing a montage that just looks like you're watching the trailer all over again, you know they're in a bit of a hurry. I liked all of the protagonists, but none of the antagonists felt even remotely threatening to me. The people in my theater actually started laughing whenever they did the stupid "Heil Hydra" salute that looked like some kind of aerobic exercise rather than some kind of Nazi salute.
Overall, I liked it more than Iron Man 2 or Thor, but the first Iron Man movie was still the best, just because they took the time to explain everything he did and develop the story completely, rather than brush it aside in favor of action.
Am I the only one who thought Howard Stark got way too much screen time? I mean, the actor didn't have nearly as much charisma as Robert Downey Jr. has, and it just felt like his character was really forced in there as a continuing reference to Iron Man and to give them someone to invent shit for Captain America.
Tony Stark built his first Iron Man suit in a cave. IN A CAVE! And not even his own cave either, it was a prison cave.
That set the tone for Marvel ridiculousness, nothing in Captain America is inconsistent with that.
The key for me is for them to figure out a way to make the character work anyways. They did it with Iron Man, Thor, and now Captain America. Hulk kind of works no matter what, who can't relate to a rage quit?
I liked seeing the Howard Stark character because it reinforces the timeline of all this. It really makes the Marvel universe seem more real when you see Tony Stark's dad living his life including his own era's superheroes. It also reinforces how tied into the government and military Stark's business is in this Marvel world.
I think actress they got was the best female character yet. She's as hot as any of them, and yet I could take her seriously when she points a gun at someone. She's not someone I'd want to piss off.
Plus with Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci as supporting actors, not to mention Hugo Weaving, this seems to always have someone owning the screen.
One criticism I agree with- for a world menace that has the most modern armor and some kind of laser and/or particle weapons, those Hydra guys sure are lame. I mean, the only time they seem to 'win' their fights is when they are picking on old guys, I mean REALLY old guys.

Still, this movie in my opinion, was rock solid. I didn't notice any glaring flaws with it.
Anyone else laugh at the part near the end when [sp]Capt. is fighting the Red Skull on the plane, and when he finishes his antagonist speech, Captain America looks back up at him and says "Nope." [/sp] ?
Did anyone think the part where [sp] Tommy Lee Jones pushed the red button to make the car go fast [/sp]was a reference to Men in Black?
I was unsure how I'd like the movie at first but it turned out great. I always found the Iron Man movies WAY overrated, so I found this to be the best of the "leading up to" The Avengers movies. All the Avengers stuff was fucking awesome.
PS Red Skulls car was fucking badass

What's David Bradley's role in the movie? I see he's listed as "Tower keeper" and assume his role is very small, but can some explain the scene(s) he's in?
I want that fucking car.

Very beginning of movie, he's guarding the Norwegian tower with the cube thingy.
[sp]He gets shot and dies the end[/sp]
Can't see it yet. Chickenpox. Oh and it releases next week for us.
I read that there's a cameo for the original [sp]Human Torch.[/sp] Is this true?
No.
[editline]25th July 2011[/editline]
Wait, actually yes.
[sp]The android Human Torch makes a small cameo in Captain America: The First Avenger at the Stark expo as a Synthezoid on display in an oxygen deprived glass tube.[/sp]
Going to see this in 3D with my friend later, I would see it in 2d but there's not a local theater playing it in 2d.
I thought it was okay, the ending was really disappointing, you expect him to [sp]survive the plane crash and get back to the US to meet the girl, but he doesn't[/sp]
The squad he picked didn't have a big enough role in the movie either.
I liked the ending because it was [sp]unexpected and not the usual WOW HE'S MAGICALLY ALIVE AFTER A MASSIVE CRASH bullshit[/sp]
Hahaha why would you expect that. [sp]At the beginning you see that plane discovered in the arctic, the same plane Cap is piloting later.[/sp]
And I thought it was generally well known in the Marvel mythos that Captain America is found frozen in ice.

Yeah, I liked it as well because I don't recall any superhero movies in recent memory that have had [sp]the hero make a genuine sacrifice of himself.[/sp] Chris Evans put a lot of heart into the performance from what I could see, so that helped a lot as well.

As in he gets off the plane and meets the girl that same year :downs:
Thinking about the ending, and the character, I realize what the subtext of this movie is: It's a story of a guy with the worst case of blue balls EVER!
Think of it- he's not getting anywhere with women in the beginning, he has no outlet for his energy. He has an unrelenting obsession with joining the army and fighting in the war, why? Well, rifles are phallic objects, penis substitutes. He wants to shoot his gun! Everyone tries to protect him, in other words treat him like a kid(sexually immature) rather than a man(sexually mature). He has a small body with a big head!
the rest of this essay is spoilery by necessity
[sp]Okay then what happens after he finds a doctor who helps him(a Freudian type doctor)? He literally swells up! He looks positively engorged. So yeah, you think he's finally happy right? Hell no! He's surrounded by hot girls but he still can't fire his gun!
His frustration comes to a head(hehe) when he performs in front of the soldiers. They laugh at him. Why? Cause they've shot their guns(ie aren't virgins) and know he still hasn't fired a shot(still a virgin).
Do I need to spell out how losing his best friend ON A TRAIN fits into this? I didn't think so.
Which brings us to the ending. We know 'date' really means sex. The girl showing up in a RED dress signifies that he is finally gonna get some. And what happens instead? He's frozen in ice for 70 years! How much bluer can a guy's balls get?[/sp]

That would be a fairly generic ending. :downs:

I liked the second half. It was supposed to be like the films of the soldiers they showed in theaters. Like the one they showed earlier in the film.
Just saw it. Pretty good on the whole, I'm very much looking forward to the Avengers.
Though the montages were a bit silly. Captain America driving in slo-mo on a motorcycle away from an exploding Hydra facility, followed by the Red Skull appearing in his hilariously stereotypical evil-villain car and gritting his teeth in anger. I could practically hear him saying, "Curse you, Captain America! Foiled again!"

That's what I liked about this film, it didn't take itself too seriously, and that's what comic book films that aren't batman should be.
I really enjoyed it. Had the comic book feel of the golden age [sp] sad to see Bucky die but it is a possible lead up to the Winter Soldier and that would be cool.[/sp]
