Disc brakes = more shit to get fucked up. Less is more.

I have disk brakes on my car and they don't get fucked up. :)
Again, my reason being I'm always watching one step ahead and remaining much more alert to my surroundings. I also feel a lot more confident in my own two legs bringing me to a safe stop than a brake. that's the reason I ride fixed, the bike becomes an extension of your body and reacts almost telepathically to whatever your riding situation may be. Really though this only applies to experienced riders. It's more important to be 110% aware of your surroundings and what is going to happen ahead of you and what you will do if that car turns or pulls out etc, rather then putting all your faith in some little mechanical thing like a brake. When you ride brakeless, you think with your legs, and it's your legs that make you go, and make you stop. Very simple. I find that I can react and slow down faster with my legs, then I can reach out and remember to squeeze a little lever to slow down.
If you want to run brakes, run them. If you don't know how to stop without them, run brakes. If you know what you are doing and don't need them, don't run them. If you've never ridden a fixed gear bike or don't know how to stop one, then you have no business commenting on it.
Have you ever considered the fact that if your chain snaps, as it can do, you are fucked? I rode brakeless fixie for a while and it was the most dangerous phase of my cycling life. It's all very well anticipating two blocks ahead but in traffic that will mean you can never safely get up to any decent speed. I very much doubt that you can stop as quickly as a rider with brakes.
If he breaks it, he should pay the bill for its repair.
Why doesn't he have his own bike?
Tell him it isn't a mountain bike
Although way back I had a cheap $70 Wal-Mart mountain bike, and that son of a bitch was indestructible
That's why I never lend my bike to people. They tend to fuck things up.
BTW: Fixies are dangerous and should not be on the road, people around here are always riding through red lights and generally messing up the flow of traffic and pissing everyone off

also disc brakes are heavier and more cumbersome, v-brakes ftw except in inclement weather or extreme dirt/mud
but then again v-brakes are just fine anyway, look at cyclocross - pros aren't allowed to use disc brakes at all and they are going like 15 mph up and down steep hills, jumping over rocks and potholes, and generally being a badass
Disk brakes are shit for any kind of bike except mountain bikes.
what's the differance? a friend of mine has a bike with disk brakes and prances about calling mine shit coz ut doesn't have disk brakes, but when i actually used the bike they squeaked like shit and were incredible useless when they got wet.
My dad is like this, except with computers. You let him touch your computer, and something will break.
Disk brakes are shit for any kind of bike except mountain bikes.
I just collected the bike from the shop, feels great, got to 30mph on the way home.
Luckily the replacement parts only cost £10, and the guy at the bike shop said "How did your Dad manage to snap two gear cables, knock the wheels out of alignment and all the other crap?".
However the general servicing/labour was free as it was my first service, so if I have to take it again it will cost more.
Also I did talk to him before I took it to the shop, and he said he "doesn't know how he broke it". :sigh:
I demand more information from your dad. This is like a shitty ending to a movie. I can't take the disclosure!
Yeah, your dad's doing something fucked up like riding home drunk or driving through traffic using the bike to get it that fucked up. Don't accept the "I don't know how I broke it", instead ask him what route he takes and whether or not he's crashed the bike recently.

Disc brakes mechanisms weight less, but the wheels need to be beefier; but they already are on a good mountain bike. Double-rim wheels are a godsend for drops. V-brakes are so damn loud sometimes. The ban on disc brakes in cyclocross was repealed
I went from a normal set of v-brakes on my last bike to an oversized disc brake on my current one and can say that their is a major improvement for my trail riding.
I don't quite understand what you mean by disc-brakes being cumbersome, their is just as much control with both a v-brake and disc. You change pads less with a disc system, but you need to check more things when you ride. The front wheels tightness due to the high torque is my only gripe really. After breaking in they are more solid for down hill descents then my v-brake and still work if riding through any water.
Good disc brakes are good, bad disc brakes are bad; the same as with v-brakes. Its all in the details, mostly alignment and pads you use.

Disk brakes and their mechanisms are extremely heavy compared with 'V' brakes, road bikes are designed to be light and with disk brakes it adds to the weight quite dramatically. That and disk brakes are too powerful for road bikes. Road bike brakes are intentionally set weakly so you can't skid and wreck the already very thin tyres.
Talk with him about that. Just be calm and dont flame at him (well, if you will have to, do it).
Hey hey what's with all the hate on fixies? And all of it seems to be from people who don't ride them.
Can some one post a pic of this Disk brake and V brake - i need to see a pic
Also i will NEVER ride without some kind of brake - i live in a hilly state with hidden driveways and stupid people / other bikers who are stupid

I would, but I don't have a £500 bike
I really need a new bike actually

discs are still invalid in UCI; you can use them elsewhere though. And disc brakes should weigh more, there's more metal and everything. Disc brakes are also a bitch to bleed out if they're hydraulic, and mechanical ones don't really offer any advantage over v-brakes other than keeping dirt out.
That said I'm not saying discs are bad, they're great if you absolutely need them but for most people v-brakes are easier to maintain and cheaper. Plus you can get rid of the squeal just by toeing them in.
Ask him for his car.
You know where this will end up...
I haven't seen my dad in 7 years.
But thanks for the advice!
I haven't seen my dad in 12 years
Gene Hunt probably visited him and broke his bike.
I can't let my dad touch any of my stuff. Once I was moving stuff out of my room (moving house) and he decided to help without mentioning it. He thought it would be a bright idea to move my chest of drawers with my TV and Wii on it, and so the Wii took a 2 meter fall :frown:
heheh, my dad just boxed my 600 $ trial bike and shipped it to a guy who bought it.
Coincidence!
Trail bikes cost more than 600$.
Unless you don't mean trail bike like I'm thinking.
i'd rather just steal bikes
why are you paying 500$ for two wheels with a clock mechanism?
i'd rather just steal bikes

£500 = $800.
Tell him to take decent care of it, and if he can't do that, tell him he can't use it. It's really disrespectful to ruin your bike.
