Just finished watching it. Incredible movie.
It plays tricks on you, you don't know what to believe through-out the movie.
I love how they hinted to the ending throughout the movie, like [sp]when he first arives and all the guards are on edge[/sp] and how he [sp]sleeps in the orderlies quaters so they can keep an eye on him[/sp]
But as other people have said, I did predict the ending, however I was happy with the overall quality and delivery of the story, which more than made up for it.
I immensely enjoyed this movie, although I was fairly certain of the end after [sp]the exchange about how the woman was lving in denial. "You can't just decide to be sane" That line serves no purpose unless the protagonist is also insane.[/sp]

yeah exactly, like i said earlier, [sp]"yeah the plot was predictable as soon as it was overshadowed via proxy by the woman he was looking for"[/sp]
Hmmm I just should've paid more attention the movie I guess...
Would lopve to watch this film again
yeah exactly, like i said earlier, [sp]"yeah the plot was predictable as soon as it was overshadowed via proxy by the woman he was looking for"[/sp]
[sp]the scene where 'Rachel' yells "WHO ARE YOU?!" kinda plays into that[/sp]
this was filmed at my town's state hospital
I went and saw it on my birthday. Damn good movie I must say. Also, my birthday was opening day in the US.
Also, somewhat off-topic, but they need to make an 'In Theaters Now' commercial. The one that says 'In Theaters February 19th' one is bugging me.
[sp]At the end, he pretends to be insane to be lobotomized.[/sp]
[sp]At the end, he pretends to be insane to be lobotomized.[/sp]
is this true? It seems like that would be the ending for the book.
How was this movie predictable
I wasn't expecting the final twist at all
Somehow [sp] the Dr. was smart enough to leave his armed guards without ammo incase someone stole their guns, but yet he was going to leave a loaded gun on the table for anyone to grab? [/sp]
Personally I was pissed. I would've rather heard an amazing story of the trained marshall who discovered a secret nazi-esque experimenting facility on a remote island. I was pissed when you found out [sp]it was all a lie [/sp]. The part where [sp]he saw Rachel in the cave[/sp] what when I really started to like the movie, but It was fucked up when I found out [sp] she never existed [/sp]
Somehow [sp] the Dr. was smart enough to leave his armed guards without ammo incase someone stole their guns, but yet he was going to leave a loaded gun on the table for anyone to grab? [/sp]
[sp]Are you talking about the gun he grabbed from the table in the lighthouse? That was just a toy gun that he imagined was real[/sp]
[sp]Are you talking about the gun he grabbed from the table in the lighthouse? That was just a toy gun that he imagined was real[/sp]
[sp]Exactly, but people were talking about how predictable the movie was. While I do disagree, I saw that coming. The doctor made note that he purposely gave empty guns to the guards. Something you wouldn't expect. If the Dr. was that witty, why would he leave a loaded firearm on the table? Once andrew/chuck looked at the gun, you knew it wouldn't work, thus, predictable. [/sp]
Seen it today and I have to say that it was kind of a mindfuck, especially these two things:
[sp]When they got to the gates and were asked to turn in weapons, Chuck had no idea how to unholster his pistol and had trouble with it, and Ted looked at him like what the hell. [/sp]
[sp]During interviews of the group or whatever, when Chuck got up from the table and walked away for a moment, the lady wrote run on his paper and wanted him to escape. She was in on this the whole time and it was a chance for her to tell him without Chuck seeing. [/sp]
that caught my eye and made me think at the end.
Nevertheless it was an awesome movie
The book was so much better, but the movie did a good job of telling it. However, it really is one of those stories that work better in book form where the author doesn't have get the story over and done with within 2 hours.
Great film, not sure on the ending. I reckon [sp] he was sane in the end and they did do the role-play, but like previous posts have said he wanted to die a hero, even if it was a fantasy [/sp]
Loved every second but it made me so fucking paranoid for the rest of the evening.

I see it a bit differently. [sp]It's not that he wanted to die a hero, that's not possible. What he did NOT want is to die a monster. Changing that IS possible... by accepting the lobotomy, he will lose the knowledge of what he's done. From his point of view, after the lobotomy, he is an innocent man and can die innocent.[/sp]

He can live a hero by having the lobotomy though, right?
When shit started getting a little weird for him mentally and in his dreams, I immediately called the ending and I was right. But it was still good and very well made!
It eased you into the twist, but I enjoyed it. Would have liked it to be abit creepier though.
I like to think [sp]that if he did relapse in the end, he tricked them into thinking he was going to go peacefully but try and pull a houdini and escape capture.[/sp]
He can live a hero by having the lobotomy though, right?
Not really a hero, since a hero has to do something, well, heroic. What would qualify in his case?.
His specific line was [sp]Is it better to die a good man or live knowing you're a monster? Or something very close to that. Being a hero is different, it's more than just being a good man. By getting the lobotomy, and losing all knowledge of his previous self, meaning killing his wife, he gets to live innocent of any crime(in his mind). Therefore, being innocent of crime, he's a good man. When he dies, it'll be as a good man.
If he is cured, he lives without being lobotomized, which is good. However, it means he'll have to live with full knowledge of what has happened(wife killed his kids) AND what he did(murdered his wife, violence against the staff). He'll live and die as a 'monster' in his own eyes, since what he did was basically unforgivable, especially for a lawman. That's why he doesn't go with that choice, the price for sanity was too high.[/sp]
Just saw it and bought the book on the way back!
It was fucking amazing.
Reminded me of the number 23.
Anyone agree?
Saw this last night. Loved it.
Scorsese has yet to disappoint me.
So was the woman in the cave real or not?
I say no[sp] because of the reason he went down there. He 'saw' his buddy's body remember? Then he gets down there, no body...but look! A cave! That's way too much for me to believe they had that guy lay out there simply to lure him to the cave. It would have been easier to just have the woman let him catch a glimpse of her so he could follow.
Therefore, it must have ALL(seeing the body to what's in the cave) been in his mind.[/sp]
really liked it, and i've got to say the acting when [sp]he flashes back to when he finds his children dead was intense. it sent a chill down my spine, which is pretty rare[/sp]
great movie.

i must've misunderstood, but i thought [sp]there was a rock shaped like the man at the bottom? let me see if i can find a picture.[/sp]
[editline]09:39PM[/editline]
i can't be the only one who thought that this rock was supposed to be what he saw...
