It's really bad for you, don't take it cos it will fuck up your brain
There's nothing wrong with being patriotic. But when patriotism meets with ignorance like your Step Dad's, then there's a problem. I'm a patriotic person. I'm proud to be Scottish. But I'm not so ignorant that I think that my country is the best place in the world, and I should sacrifice my life for it if needed.
I like my country. I just live in it. But I don't "love" it. It's organised reasonable. That's why I like it.
Related: Patriotism is stupid.
Without patriotism the world would look very different. My country (Finland) would probably not even exist if it wasn't for patriotism.
In my opinion, patriotism is a rather neutral doctrine that can be used aswell as misused. I consider myself a patriot in the sense that I'm proud over what our nation has accomplished, but that I also recognize that there are issues that need to be resolved, I'm not one of those ignorant hicks who consider themselves to be patriots when they're in fact nothing more than nationalists worshipping fictional greatness that our country never had in the first place. A true patriot knows that his country isn't perfect and that it can always change for the better, be it education, healthcare, freedom or whatever challenge we've yet to accomplish.
The difference between patriotism and nationalism is essentially the same difference between spirituality and organized, dogmatic religion. Y'all need to acknowledge this crucial distinction.
The meaning of the word "Patriotism" itself has been corrupted beyond recognition thanks to public ignorance and the extremist zeal with which certain groups have tried to convince the public that the word is synonymous with nationalism.

I'm surprised this hasn't fallen into a "We all hate America" discussion yet.
Nationalism, regardless what country you're from, is wrong. It's okay to be proud of your country, but Nationalists are scum. Nationalists believe that their country is the best in the world, and that it cannot do wrong. Personally, I prefer to keep my eyes open and focus on the merits of people rather than nations. Generalization, after all, is always stupid.
I love my party. :ussr:
I remember a year ago I went to a gun expo in dulles (Northern virginia) and when i walked in, i was greeted to my left by a stand selling Nazi ww2 stuff, such as helmets, pins, hats, weapons, etc. and i thought to myself "Ok, ok, it's just historical, that's all, nothing wrong" then i walked around a bit, and i saw across from the Glock stand, they had airsoft guns, and near the airsoft guns, they had a bunch of anti-obama bumper stickers and i thought to myself "It's ok, just someones political opinion, doesn't necesarily mean anything racist..." then i moved near the gigantic fucking handgun stand and was greeted by the sight of <imagespam> And i was just like "OK, LOL, IM DONE!" and left.
Nazi shit is at almost every gun show, it's for collectors and shit, and you're in a gun show filled with gun crazy republicans, what did you think they were going to be saying about Obama, a democratic president? They're not going to bow down to him when so many democrats are anti-gun. There is no excuse for the confederate flag though, other than them wanting to speak their opinion, and if you can't handle someone speaking their opinion then you aren't going to be comfortable in very many places. also fuck yeah, 'Mericuh Also, it seems you're really quick to judge, as soon as you see Nazi oriented stuff you think the people selling it, or the people buying it are Nazis? No, they're collectors. Looking at the post it seems you're looking for things to justify your hate.

I like being German. I'd rather be born in New Zealand though, but I like being German. I am proud to be dutch, but would not hesitate moving. There's much more to see! Every country (most anyway) has something to be proud of. Look for it and you shall find it. If you were not already you will become proud of your country. And guys, America is not a country / nation.
God save the Gravy!

Proud Swed :sweden: altho' i dont dispise other countries and i would not do everything for my country
I am proud to be part of the United Kingdom, the only place in the world where 4 countries can relentlessly mock each other yet stand by each other in a crisis. The UK, in my honest opinion, is the greatest location in the world. However, the list of other countries I want to visit is endless. I want to visit every state in the USA, I want to see Venice, Melbourne, Tokyo, Paris, Lisbon, Berlin. Y'know what? Fuck it. I love everywhere in the world. I don't care if we fight, or make racist remarks, I love everywhere for it's own little reasons. I just wish "patriots" would see things my way for once.
Proud Swed :sweden: altho' i dont dispise other countries and i would not do everything for my country
The thing you need to know is not if you don't want to do everything for your country, but when shit hits the fan, for which country you will.
The thing you need to know is not if you don't want to do everything for your country, but when shit hits the fan, for which country you will.
how about if the shit hits the fan i just look out for me and my family?
The effect of the wasted millions of watts worth of light from cities and large towns. The big glow over cities? That's light pollution. I, for one, am NOT proud to be Zimbabwean. My family moved out of that place years ago for a reason, and we aren't going back. I'm not really proud to be virtually half-English either.
I've never lived in the country where I'm 'from' (passport wise) but I've lived all around the world in my childhood due to the fact that my Dad's job required him to move around a lot. (if you want a list: Kuwait, Suadi Arabia, Sweden, USA, Canada, U.A.E, India, Japan, Norway, and right now Jordan.) I personally believe that patriotism and nationalism are quite useless and idiotic ideals to pursue. There ain't no benefit from either. EDIT: if anyone is interested, Suadi Arabia was the wost and Sweden was the best :smug:
What's he work as? Sounds like a awesome job.
:scotland: Enough said. :colbert:
