For example I can drive sedately and slowly, or I can kick it down a gear or two and tear away.

Shift from 5th to 3rd, and floor the speeder.
Autos can make kickdown too. Just floor it and it shifts down automatically.
Anyone can kickdown in any car.

Everyone should learn on a stick. Most people that learn on automatics it seems, don't realize that manuals are hard to start on a hill. Need to be taught parking distance again.

If you take the driving test in Norway with an automatic you are not allowed to drive a manual with that license, you gotta take the test again with a manual. If you take it with a manual in the first place you can drive both auto and manual with the license.

Interesting, mine is a "B" restriction for corrective lenses.
I don't think an automatic only restriction is necessary, if you own a manual you'll probably figure it out. Although I'm sure there are exceptions.
