I have an 08 Golf GTI, Volkswagen make very nice cars.
Previously my uncle had an older GTI. I could not fault it one bit other than some malfunctions with the radiator. I would definitely look at golf, however old it is.
Ideally I'd like to get an RX-7 pretty soon. This one's only $10,000 and for sale in my area.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking LOVE the FD. It's one of the hottest japanomobiles there is ever! But unless you have some knowledge on engines, you're taking a risk. Rotary engines are in general much more fragile than normal engines, and if something happens, it's not always that easy to fix.
