Heroes are people who should look friendly, but villains should attract attention and have a menacing aura. Probably the reason why, but this was stated at the beginning I believe.
I remember playing the Legend Of Zelda games. Ganondorf and Zant looked so more impressive than Link did.
You forgot Agent Smith.... Goddamn he was a badass.

"It seems that you've been living two lives. One life, you're Thomas A. Anderson, program writer for a respectable software company. You have a social security number, pay your taxes, and you... help your landlady carry out her garbage. The other life is lived in computers, where you go by the hacker alias "Neo" and are guilty of virtually every computer crime we have a law for. One of these lives has a future, and one of them does not. "
Kratos was a bloodthirsty psychopath, and hardly a hero.
Not exactly good though is he?
He's fighting with conspirators, his family killers and for the good.
As Altair, who is fighting for Templars to stop their crusade against Palestine or whereever he is.
Both of them try to prevent templars from getting full control over people - The Eden parts.
Those are two another great example of badass heroes.

The second one is, the first one, though, was just a tad too bloodthristy and repedative, not to mention that he had no clue about what he was doing at the time.
Also, am I the only one who thought the story in Assassin's Creed one was rediculously vague and repedative, not to mention fucked up at the ending?

In my opinion this is a badass hero.

By the start of the game both have been mindless killer/avenger, that is true, but both by the end became more wise and started taking their actions more seriously...Well, okay, Ezio was just an Avenger who was killing wrong people in the right time, but Altair in the end stopped being a mindless killer and started fighting Tampliers to stop their influence over the world
