Man, The Last Airbender was one of my favorite shows as a kid, and probably my only and best favorite show. I'd tune in every week for it and I would literally try and air bend, believing it was real.

I don't get how the airbenders EVER got killed.
They can theoretically bend anything. bend some air underwater, put it in a little bubble of air, instant waterbender. Set some fire, bend the air around it, instand firebender with some limitations.
The only thing they wouldn't be able to bend would be earth.

Earthbending is Hung Gar, but Toph's style of earthbending is Southern Praying Mantis. Firebending is Northern Shaolin Kung Fu.
