I think you should have said you left your wallet at home/etc. and paid for the treatment, but spinal cord injuries don't tend to result well, especially in animals, and care can run into the thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars.
Looking past that, at least you did it yourself, although you probably could have used some painkillers, it's reasonable if you didn't have any opiates or needles on hand.
Tell your family what happened, but you should probably say you went to the vet and they said the prognosis was bad, and to do anything further they needed a hefty deposit (which you didn't have), and if you waited a day, the dog would be in extreme agony and highly unlikely to be saved.

He just needs to be honest - he didn't have the money for the exam fee and he didn't want to leave the dog in agony while he found the money elsewhere so he acted.

Things struggle *really* hard when being drowned, it's quite a sad and violent way to kill something. And then when you think it's dead, it goes through it's death throes, and you have to keep holding it under, in case it's still alive.

That's a stupid reason - vets have payment plans, or he could have lied about his money, or told them do everything necessary and his parents will pay the bill.
Besides, he could have found the money in the time it took to buy the ammo.

Once the initial struggle is over, yes. But an accidental drowning I'd think is different. If you're being forced under water, it'd take you much longer to inhale water because you wouldn't be exhausted and you'd be struggling. Don't accidental drowning victims tend to inhale more water by accident before fully submerging so it lessens the shock?

I didn't really have any other choice. I would [b]at least[/b] be paying $76 everything else: treament, medication, housing, admittance etc. would all cost much more. Especially if it was a spinal injury.

Was sitting there next to it in agony any better? I have no medication for it, no painkillers. I sat there for a while about 30 minutes.

I know it's bad to lie. It was just an option. Based on some of the opinions here, I might tell the truth. The only reason I wanted to lie is because I would have no idea how to tell it to my younger brothers.
I just need to think about it more.

That was my only option. I didn't want to drown it or smash it's head. I would have if those were my only options. It was the quickest and most painless way.
