The dimensions of the pen are about 20 feet by 20 feet. The pen is not that small. they were standing next to me when I threw it. I did not expect a dog to go and fetch a stick that is bigger and heavier than he is.
What the fuck, man. You tell this story so matter-of-factly, like it's no big deal.
Oh god. Today is my birthday AND I live in Missouri.
Find his family, tell them!

Now you're pretty much at the point of no return, since you shot your dog without telling your parents about it. It's going to sound absolutely awful if you tell them. "Hey guys, I crushed our dog's head. But...I was afraid that you'd be mad, so I shot it."
Couldn't you have at least arranged a payment plan with the vet?
If you have $20, and that's 1/5 of what you have right now, then you have $100. That would have been enough to have your dog admitted into the veterinary, and additional charges could have been paid off with a payment plan. Seriously man, you're either an idiot who panicked instead of making intelligent decisions or a troll. And if you're a troll, you're still an idiot.
Yes, that would have left me with $4 for the rest of the week. Not counting the bullets I bought and the fees they charge. I would have to drive him over there, which is a 20-25 minute drive. I do not know where it is located. Paying that much money and potentially getting lost while the dog is still in pain. The action I took was a lot easier for both of us.
While the way the situation was handled was far from ideal, and OP is an irrevocable idiot for doing what he did, most of the people here are overreacting, and this is obviously because it's a dog. It was a stupid move in the first place to throw a fucking stump in a pen wherein there are two small dogs, but at the point where you've most likely crippled your dog, there are only so many options. You could take them to a vet, likely pay thousands for spinal surgery, and hope they fully recover (note: they probably won't). That's even assuming such an injury isn't extremely severe, and located in an ideal place. On the other hand, you could put the dog down through the vet, but why would you do that, when you can do it yourself? Everyone is quick to condemn OP for responding to the situation the way he did, but if one were in such a situation, they would probably react in a really similar way. That said, the fact that OP is trying to hide it from everyone is something that will haunt him much more than anyone else, in the long run. So I suppose that's fair. Regardless, the dog itself is out of its misery, which is the most important thing, imo.
The three things I had a problem with: 1 (not so much as 2 but still bad): He wouldn't try to work out a deal with the vet. The exam could at least have found out the severity of the injury 2: He was considering lying to his parents about the dog he killed instead of manning up 3: He was showing a general lack of empathy. Eg. Calling it "my family's dog" instead of my dog, making a thread complete with MS pain illustrations and then offering to post pictures. I wouldn't make a fucking thread to people I don't even know immediately after the accident, I'd probably be crying my eyes out.
nice to know you have a conscience, you'd rather spend $1.60 to kill a dog than $76.00 to save it.

You don't think your parents would have paid for it once they got back the next fucking night? Autism alert.

OP just decides "Oops let me just do something that could put my dogs at risk" and now he tries to cover it up. I mean I know he didn't expect it to run in the way, but when you're throwing something big randomly you need to consider if it could possibly damage anything and throw it in the direction where there is nothing it could damage.
Couldn't you have at least arranged a payment plan with the vet?
Do you have any idea how financially stressful a spinal surgery would be? Payment plan or not. Besides, the quality of life of the poor thing probably would have been bad even after surgery. Putting it down was probably the only option, and OP actually did it in a pretty humane way.

as opposed to 30 minutes doing nothing, then finally deciding to walk to walmart
Tell your parents. I'm sure they will understand it's an accident. At least you put the dog down instead of letting it suffer.
I think the OP is a sociopath. It's your dog, how can you just mercy kill it and care more about your own ass then what you just did? He seems to feel no emotion over this, when you cripple your own dog and need to mercy kill it, you just don't go " Oh lol I crippled it guess I need to kill it now. Better hope the folks don't find out."
I shot it because of it's pain. I knew they would be mad for both things. I just didn't want the dog to hurt anymore.
You're completely ignoring everything we're saying, dropping the stump on its head again would've been far less painful than taking the time to go buy some bullets.
That was actually a decent thing to do. If you were to drive it to the vet, with no painkillers, the poor dog would have certainly suffered more. By putting the dog down, you ended its suffering. Also, tell your parents. It's the right thing to do.
Why not just have the dogs go inside? Do you realize how much trouble you could have saved yourself by doing that, right? Wait, no, you don't.
I shot it because of it's pain. I knew they would be mad for both things. I just didn't want the dog to hurt anymore.
"oh god oh fuck i hurt my dog i must shoot it now"
You should be banned from owning pets of any kind.
You're completely ignoring everything we're saying, dropping the stump on its head again would've been far less painful than taking the time to go buy some bullets.
Dropping the stump on its head might not have worked, and could mean multiple hits, which would mean more pain for the dog. The time required to get the bullets would have been nothing compared to surviving extreme blunt force for a second time.
You're fucking going over your potential options in an organized manner, most of which concern your money or avoiding getting in trouble instead of grieving. There are a few times and places where doing things based on emotion are bad, like when you're on jury duty, but losing your dog should not be a time where you show no emotion what the fuck.

It's kind of hard to show emotion in text whenever you've compiled your thoughts on how to explain it.
I think FP overreacted While I don't agree with what the OP did it's his choice and consequences will be his fault. Shut the fuck up about how you think he's a terrible person, that won't do anything at all.
Where's the "asshole" rating when you need it... If it was life threatening but not fatal and required surgery that costs thousands, then take it home and shoot it.
