I had no idea Sauerkraut even counted as fermented food.
It IS created by dumping all ingredients in a barrel and letting it sit for a while, but it's more of a preserved food than a fermented one I'd say
I'll agree that Sauerkraut isn't amazing on it's own, but it's more of a supplement if anything.
A healthy one at that .

i had to handle subway pickles when i worked there and i still fucking love pickles
This is why we fucking left the swedes...
The only fermented foods I actually enjoy are bread, cheese, yogurt, some dairy creams, and soy sauce. I don't even like pickles or sour cream.

The problem is that people eat surströmming as a challenge in these types of videos. You're not supposed to just eat them straight out of the can :v: You're supposed to have them as a side, with potatoes, chive/dill and sour cream.
[editline]30th August 2016[/editline]
And also, they're an ingredient for meals like Janssons Frestelse

this is the problem with all youtubers testing surströmming, while some people eat just the potatoes and surströmming, people that aren't used to it should try it the easier way

Surströmming is supposedly actually really good for your digestion system, as it contains tons of "friendly" bacteria you need to stay healthy
First time I smelled it I vomited pretty much instantly though, and I've avoided it since.
But yeah, people who've eaten it since they were kids with proper side-dishes thinks it's really nice, and you're meant to open the can underwater, as the fish itself supposedly tastes really good, while the juice it's in smells like death

Usually things that smell like a fat man's 100 year old catheter bag taste really nice. Durian fruit for example.
Hey man if you think the nordics are crazy about fermented food, look to the east.
You got the classics like century egg, funazushi, balut...
:vomit:

Balut aint even fermented, it's a fertilized chicken growing in its egg that is then boiled alive-ish and eaten
I don't get how anyone could eat fermented food. Like, I love the fuck out of some sushi or a rare steak, but actually letting it rot before you eat it? Why?? Kimchi, sauerkraut, surströmming - they all trigger that animal instinct to stay the fuck away because they smell like a literal bloated rotting corpse and my lizard brain says "you're going to get sick and die if you touch that shit."
Hey man, kimchi is awsome. A friend of mine's grandmother brought her recipe over from South Korea and it's some of the tastiest stuff I've ever had served with rice.
