Man I love the footage from the landings of these things, so many really happy people. :D Must be amazing to work on something like this.
Chinese Jade Rabbit rover 'declared dead'
China's Jade Rabbit lunar rover has been declared dead on the surface of the Moon, state media have reported. The robot suffered a serious mechanical problem last month; officials have said it "could not be restored to full function".
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-26153520#FBM339016 Rest in peace little thing :(

Black holes are da best shit.
Update on China's rover, it might not be over yet! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-26153520#FBM339016
Just transitioned out of my old program and beginning my new one. Bsc (physics) and BA-Extended Major (Mathematics). Wish me luck FP.

I kinda wanna go on that suicide mission to Mars just to explore space.
would it be bad luck to name the next MSL "Optimism"? [editline]15th February 2014[/editline]
I kinda wanna go on that suicide mission to Mars just to explore space.
thats just irresponsible to send you on a suicide mission, the problem is we can't just jump there and come home like we did with the moon, any missions will have to last at least 2 years before they have a chance to come home. we can't send people to mars without some infastructure there already, at the very least suitable shelter and water on site must be first located and constructed, the problem with the suicide mission is that they expect to just launch a bunch of people there and have them live in their lander for the rest of their lives. it really brings up a tricky ethical discussion, would people be allowed to even go on a suicide mission like this
Hey, similar to mine. Enjoy it! Mathematical physics is fun.
Thanks! I intend to follow the mathematical physics stream under my Mathematics major - undecided on Physics but Astronomy was what attracted me to the subject, so who knows. Maybe if we're both still lurking this website in a few years time we'll have things to talk about.
would people be allowed to even go on a suicide mission like this
I don't see why not. However, I'd say people would be forced to have a really long thinking time about it (a year or two) to know for sure they want to actually go there and perhaps never ever return again.

Yeah, that has to be solved first. Will probably take a long time, but then again we're not leaving for Mars anytime soon.

They're already having closed private searches for the crew. Probably consisting of former NASA astronauts to start. [editline]16th February 2014[/editline] Also this thread is no longer bumping to the top for me.
Also this thread is no longer bumping to the top for me.
Never was bumping to the top, Garry changed General Discussion to show latest created threads up top. Was hoping the new thread would survive first page a bit longer, but oh well :v: Finally got to use my scope yesterday, looked at the moon and Jupiter, and some other stuff like a double star system and the Orion Nebula. The Moon was pretty big so didn't get any good views of any faint objects, and some clouds were in the way of Andromeda, but the Moon looked absolutely amazing. :D
Frigging UPS, deliver my tracker already :< They haven't even contacted me nor have I them, so dunno why it says I've delayed it.

[del]Also, very cloudfree today. Nothing scheduled tomorrow. I think it's another telescope day :D[/del] [del]Scratch that, too tired today. [/del] Double scratch that. I saw the Orion Nebulae, surprisingly it was pretty boring. Because the clouds finally decided I could have a look at the sky I figured it was about time to try to photograph with it too: No stacking on either.
HOW?! That's a reflector?
HOW?! That's a reflector?
8" reflector on a Goto dobsonian mount. Had to use a 2x barlow lens to get it to focus properly though. [editline]18th February 2014[/editline] Jupiter photo is cropped ~50%
What kind of exposure times? The nebula didn't look like that with the naked eye, did it?
Can't wait to see what I can do with a 55mm and the tracker. Also that's probably taken with a very high ISO and small exposure since it'd move quite fast.
What kind of exposure times? The nebula didn't look like that with the naked eye, did it?
6 seconds and ISO 6400. It didn't even look close when using my eyes, but I could see it pretty easily still.
I should move to Norway.
