Were they making a parody of Hearts of Darkness? Never watched it, but seemed like it.
me neither, but the Dean's breakdown where he's smearing himself in ashes is reminiscent of a scene in apocalypse now so I'm guessing there's some link
Jeff's dean impersonation and descent into actually being him was great.
I really liked that episode
this just feels like a rehash of the abed film episode
none of the characters acted realistically
they went way overboard with the whole "everyone's going insane" thing, and it felt really forced and lame
none of the characters acted realistically

That's the beauty of the whole thing, though. That's Community! They push these elements to the extremes because that's how the show goes. It's hardly ever been about realistic characters or factors, it's all about the extremes.
the situations have been extreme, and certain parts of each character has been extreme, but its never been to the point where you feel like each joke is being forced out
except the entirety of brittas character
So I guess I should watch Heart of Darkness to get this episode?
Because otherwise I can't get why everyone went so insane so fast, maybe that's how the movie goes (assistant director thinks Coppola is a genius, some actor gets way into the role only to be shot down, etc...)
An odd pick to use for a movie-based-episode, feels like all they wanted to say was that Heart of Darkness was better than Apocalypse Now...
Still hasn't topped the mafia one, though.
It's natural evolution. If the show was just about them in Spanish class, it would get old.
I know, and I'm all for it. I thought it was interesting when it changed to anthropology but then the threat of failing that class went away so the over-arching story of any of them just trying to graduate took a back seat to other things. And not just from a story perspective, the character's motivations for trying to graduate seemed to disappear too.
I mean, Jeff seems like he's being a jerk now, just because that's his character. Not because he was used to the lawyer background and has a great desire to get back. It's more like, they had an idea for an episode, but they needed him to be a jerk despite that, from a natural evolving standpoint, he probably wouldn't. Helping Annie move for instance, I thought he liked Annie? Even if he couldn't like her romantically, he still liked her as a friend. Why wouldn't he help her move? (Because they needed him to sing karaoke with the Dean, or have an uncomfortable lunch despite only making the Dean more annoying and not doing anything for Jeff's character.)
So with the character motivations gone, they're just caricatures they can put in these extreme situations, when the show didn't even need extreme in the first place to be funny.
Dammit, I've become that fan that I hate. Sorry.

If they kill Community, I'll kill myself. There's no way around it.
Please arrange it to look like I killed myself in protest over the show ending. Make sure they know.

I doubt that they will save the show.

Then I doubt that I will save myself. A shame; I've but dipped my toes in this... community... and already you've killed me.

The not helping Annie move made sense to me since as he explained "I'm just a guy that doesn't like taking tests, doing work, and getting yelled at". He didn't wish to help Annie move because he is lazy but also REALLY doesn't want to have the group dislike him. On the other hand there is no social obligation for him to help with the advertisement so that did feel forced. Jeff in that situation would have made a classic winger that showed he wasn't going to help and then not turned up. Jeff's straight up acceptance to doing the ad seem against his character.
I do wish for some clarification on Jeff's current goals, is he still trying to reclaim his lawyer gig? Or has he decided to stay at community college with the study group? It seems rather in the air.

The deal he cut with the bar association -was- to go to community college for 4 years. He wouldn't need to go to law school due to past experience, just take a law major at Greendale.
I miss Duncan..

I'm personally way more into Gillian Jacobs than Alison Brie. But maybe that's just me. :tinfoil:

Yes but in season 1 he wouldn't stand for posters with his face on it to be shown to the public and now he just accepts being in the advertisement even though he could of just said no.

Yeah its pretty much a Heart of Darkness episode. Ex. Referencing going way off budget, actor problems, the deteriorating mental state of the director, etc.
Ironically I was reading about Heart of Darkness the day before this episode came out.

Coincidentally, not ironically.

good job NBC

It used to be funnier. I wonder how Donald Glover feels about the show he used to write for is now taking the spot of the show he's acting in.

He's just sort of winging it
this show is great, but that last episode was just terrible and awkward.
It was fun to see that video, It's changed so much since the pilot and I liked watching that. Abed has always been the best In my opinion and when I saw the "Am I deaf?" part again it cracked me up.
Coincidentally, not ironically.
Damnit. I'll get it right next time.
I like that the show aren't really afraid to try new things, despite some average episodes caused because of this it's also brought us some great ones, such as the paintball ones.
this show will always hold a special place in my heart
