I've seen [i]Groundhog Day[/i], didn't enjoy it at all. You don't have to enjoy the trope itself to enjoy the way it's portrayed or interpreted in the show. Fair enough that you didn't enjoy that episode; we all have our personal tastes. I didn't think that the show spent that much time repeating things (certainly not 50%, for sure) - much of the episode's humour was derived from the fact that each of the situations changed according to which member of the group left, and also the denouement (which I thought was sentimental, but appropriate).
Conversely, I usually quite like zombie-themed media, and I didn't enjoy [i]Community[/i]'s zombie Halloween episode at all. I was born a year before the movie released, and I only saw it on reruns and whatnot as a young child - so admittedly, then, I don't have a terribly clear idea of what it's like. From my childish interpretation of it, it seemed like most of Rusty's objections to the [i]Community[/i] ep were what I found irritating - the constant set-up, etc. (I probably had a short attention span). Also, it seemed a bit overly sentimental in its ending.
Plus, I'm not American, so I never got the idea of Groundhog Day.
I might try re-watching it, though; would you recommend?
Edit: I did enjoy the episode of [i]Buffy[/i] where they use the same conceit - but that was 45 minutes, and pushing it for novelty factor. An entire movie length seems a bit OTT to me.

Him waking up everyday isn't used for comedic effect all the time, it's a pretty philosophical movie. Buddhists love it.
In Groundhog Day Phil's days last a lot longer and a lot more happens (character development/drama wise) so it's not a constant barrage of comedy while the community episode time lines were fit into a few minutes and pure comedy. It's one of my favourite movies.
