Seems to be no reason whatsoever.
Smith is the one who had the device, so the other Doctors made sense as they've been scanning the planet for over 1000 years. No need for Capaldi to show up. He didn't have the device, he didn't need to scan (as it wouldn't help his past incarnation), and surely as he's the most recent incarnation his presence should mean Smith-Doctor loses all memory of the event. It made no real sense at all.

Ah that's good! In my eyes a split in Doctor Who is dreadful.
I don't think 8 will be split. I think Capaldi deserves a full series all at once to establish himself in the role.
