It's a bold statement, but I have to admit - it's one that I certainly agree with. And the reasons McGann thinks he'll be so good? Well… see for yourself.
"He's got the combination of steel and comedy and intelligence that is the Doctor," he explained. "He might just turn out to be a genius, a master stroke. Because we know how good he is. One thing that Capaldi does, and I know it might sound daft because there's lots of clever actors, but not that many who can act highly intelligent - he can."
Of course, we all know Peter Capaldi from the marvellous British comedy, 'The Thick Of It'. And it's his portrayal of Malcolm Tucker - an aggressive, profanity-spouting Director of Communications - which showcases his ability to act intelligently. He is, after all, a clever (if incredibly ruthless) character.
"He's a super brain, Peter… he's even won an Oscar as a director," said McGann. "He's a brilliant man who can act brilliantly - he can also be funny, but he can be scary while he's being funny and that might turn out to be the best combination of Doctor."
But while many 'Doctor Who' fans applaud the decision to cast a more mature Doctor, is this really the right time? After all, the current audience might be a bit too used to the fresh-faces of Matt Smith and David Tennant…

I know it's just a lead-in to McGann's line about avoiding another younger actor, but that quote basically boils down to "the current audience is used to younger looking doctors, so we should only ever have younger doctors forever and ever"

If Eccleston had come back - they should have just casually mixed Capaldi in with the first 12 Doctors then had 9 for the big reveal. Because it probably would have been even more shocking :v:
