On my BBC local radio is some comedy gold right now. They sent the reporter out to ask people what they thought of the new Doctor Who. They intentionally play the audio where people sound stupid. One person thought they were asked about 'Pizza Pa Poldi'. Apparently more after 8. I dare say they'll upload it online.
DWTV Spoiler-Free Review
Early on in the episode Capaldi asks Clara “Am I a good man?” It’s the scene we’ve been bombarded with during promotion and this sets the overall theme for the episode. But perhaps the more appropriate question is, what separates the Doctor from a Dalek? The difference might not be as pronounced as you would think.
http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/into-the-dalek-spoiler-free-review-65964.htm
Have we seen Autons since Rose? I don't think I recall seeing them.
[sp]I fucking love that he recognized his face from Pompeii, even if he couldn't exactly place it. The whole "You never know where the faces will come from" bit was beautiful. Capaldi was magnificent. The coldness reminds me a bit of Colin Baker. There were beautiful nods to previous Doctors (the bit about a long scarf was nice). And I nearly lost my shit at the Matt Smith cameo. Also, fuck all the people online complaining Capaldi's too old.[/sp] [editline]29th August 2014[/editline] Also, other bits I loved: [sp]Vastra tricking Jenny into posing scantily-clad for a painting, because she's a big ol' reptilian horndogs. . .and then trying to get Clara to do the same. The following exchange: "When did you stop wearing the veil?" "When you stopped seeing it." The Doctor's menacing moments. . .scaring the shit out of a hobo and demanding his coat, leaving Clara behind, etc. His rage when the dinosaur combusted, and his vow to solve the mystery, treating it as if it were any murder. The memory loss in the beginning (brought to mind Paul McGann shortly after regenerating). The ambiguity surrounding the droid's death.[/sp] It wasn't the strongest episode, but I loved it. I can't wait to see what else Capaldi has in store.
Deep Breath is ahead of The Impossible Astronaut with 8.89m Website update! CapaldEyes in the logo! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006q2x0
Have we seen Autons since Rose? I don't think I recall seeing them.
Isn't the Nestene Consciousness dead though?
Have we seen Autons since Rose? I don't think I recall seeing them.
Technically, weren't the Romans/Rory in "The Pandorica Opens" autons? They had the same hand/gun thing and were made of plastic. EDIT: Yep
Back at Stonehenge, the Doctor discovers that the volunteer legionaries, including Rory, are Autons, and he is quickly captured as his other orbiting foes materialise around him.
For those asking about episode posters, Radio Times does some damn good ones
I've pinpointed why I don't like Deep Breath as a regeneration episode - The Doctor doesn't breath out any excess energy - There's no scene where he selects his new costume - Unlike the Eleventh Hour, he has his screwdriver and TARDIS - There's no clear moment when he becomes 12. It could be when he removes the face mask, it could be when the half-faced man dies. Christmas Invasion and The Eleventh Hour had very clear "I'm the Doctor" moments.
- Unlike the Eleventh Hour, he has his screwdriver and TARDIS
Had the TARDIS for the same amount of time as The Eleventh Hour. Both to emerge at the start, then to leave and come back again at the end :v: Meh, I don't think Deep Breath needed to tick off a checklist to be counted as a good post-regeneration episode. I imagine The Eleventh Hour will be forever held as a benchmark. Probably didn't have a costume scene as neither Capaldi nor 12 seem to want it to be a big deal. For me the biggest crime was shoving Paternoster down our throats when there was a far more interesting newcomer to spend time with. This will always be 12's moment for me, though. Lots. And you get to see it in all its x-ray glory.

I've pinpointed why I don't like Deep Breath as a regeneration episode - The Doctor doesn't breath out any excess energy
Wasn't the only reason that he didn't breath excess regen energy was because it was all used to destroy the Dalek fleet?

Or any of the classic Doctor's first episodes. Okay, bad thought, they all have costume moments and "I am the Doctor" scenes. But the other two points seem rather limited.

As far as 12 not having a "costume moment," I was actually satisfied with the whole hands-in-pockets, flips-out-the-lining, "So, what do you think?" moment. The new Doctor is far too busy being a badass for all that shit. Edit: JESUS FUCK, he really reminds me of Colin Baker's 6. The darkness (6 strangles his companion, while 12 [sp]seemingly leaves his to die[/sp]), the cold, analytical nature, the dry, disdainful wit. 12 feels like classic Who, right out of the gate. I hope it's a trend that continues.
Just throwing this out there for the hopefully distant future - can 12 have a regeneration which isn't foreshadowed months or indeed years in advance? Thanks, everyone involved.

For those that say the show hasn't changed at all and it's just media fluff I'd show them this. No score. Slow moving. Very natural. If Clara wasn't there it would be totally unrecognisable. [editline]29th August 2014[/editline] I don't trust Danny as he stole me name. He's also a maths teacher and they're evil.

omg hwat is this waterloo road????
He also is a suspected lady killer. He kills ladies. Fuck this shit it's darker than Turlough
I thought this was a fantastic regeneration episode because shit just happened and not for the sake of fitting a "regeneration episode". It was just a cool storyline in which he had happened to have just regenerated. Plus he had a lot of moments which made you realize he isn't going to take any shit, which is just great
Had the TARDIS for the same amount of time as The Eleventh Hour. Both to emerge at the start, then to leave and come back again at the end :v:
11 specifically states he has no TARDIS. He tries to use it to escape from Prisoner Zero with Amy at the beginning. A big thing of the episode was that he had no screwdriver or TARDIS and had to use his brain to save the world. [editline]29th August 2014[/editline]
Wasn't the only reason that he didn't breath excess regen energy was because it was all used to destroy the Dalek fleet?
Ah, I see what you mean. Good point.
Phil Ford on how they wrote the new Doctor:
"It was entertaining but really difficult. I mean, it always is. When you write for any character that is completely new…. Steven had fed me guides, though. When I did the first draft, I think, we were kind of talking more about Tom Baker’s Doctor. So I basically wrote the first draft for Tom Baker! Then we started talking about a raging Billy Connolly, and that was much more of a guide! I think I’m right in saying they were the first scripts to be delivered, so Steven was still getting his head around the Doctor, I think.”
I mean what we had instead was a peek into the inside of the Tardis when he first opens the door, and it's just black and smokey. Feels like Satan (the not-entirely-evil-Satan) from Paradise Lost struggling back to Earth from the dark depths of the world. It feels kind of right given the change from 'you've got to laugh otherwise you'll cry and also break down because you've killed millions' 11th Doctor into the 'fuck it I feel grumpy so I'll be grumpy' 12th Doctor. But it definitely should've happened after the Doctor committed some sort of Time-War crime (or even Amy/Rory) to validate that change more completely. Misguidedly watched a few seconds from episode 4 on a poorly titled YouTube vid. No plot. But 12. Oh boy. [sp]DO AS YOU ARE TOLD![/sp]

To those complaining about the size of the dinosaur: At no point does either the Doctor or Clara specify the dinosaur is a Tyrannosaurus, nor do they specify it followed them from EARTH'S past.
To those complaining about the size of the dinosaur: At no point does either the Doctor or Clara specify the dinosaur is a Tyrannosaurus, nor do they specify it followed them from EARTH'S past.
Vastra said they get that big.

My desktop has a lot of left hand icons so it would get partly covered and a lot of dead space would end up on display. If you don't mind?
So yeah, there was the prequel whatsit to Deep Breath with Strax talking about the Doctor's past incarnations. But are we forgetting that he already did one almost identical last year:
