Assuring to get our first "Capaldi leads a cramped corridor chase" scene :v: With a bit of "the run" earlier on, too.
'Dalek' did it better.
uhhhhhhhhhhh im pretty sure the script has to specify something happening, the director cant just put stuff in
when it's something based on visuals like that entering the dalek that stuff is like 60% up to the director I don't know what it says in the script but I'd bet it says something relatively simple to describe that scene and it's the director and special effect's job to expand on it. The script isn't JUST the writers job either, the director should have quite a decent input on it.
I wouldn't be surprised if everything from this series and whatnot is leading up to a [sp]Rome-Pompeii-Caecilius-face reveal.[/sp] 1. In Day of the Doctor, [sp]the first line is Clara quoting Marcus Aurelius - "Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one." (this isn't cheating, Capaldi was in it :U)[/sp] 2. In Deep Breath, [sp]Marcus Aurelius was mentioned again by Clara, as the only poster she had in her room. Furthermore it's mentioned that some of the metalwork on the robot looks Roman.[/sp] 3. In the Deep Breath script (okay this is cheating) [sp]the robot is said to look like 'a Roman Emperor"[/sp]
On that third point, The Doctor also pointed out the droid's Roman metalwork.
I really really liked that. It was obviously an expansion of Dalek. It even quoted a line of dialogue. But it also felt very much like it's own story. 45 minutes of adventure and danger. I'd say it's one my favourite episodes.

I'd say it's one my favourite episode.
I felt it was pretty cool too, although apparently my mum and sister weren't really feeling it. They like Capaldi, but don't seem to be enjoying the episodes so far. Also, that Missy is definitely up to something. First the body-snatching android, now that one space marine. I still can't figure out what her plan is, acquiring people who died on account of the Doctor's involvement, and at the instant of their death, no less... I would say she's building an army, given the combat orientation of her current "collectees", but for what purpose? Also also, Rusty's probably dead by now, since even one Dalek wouldn't be able to take down an entire battlefleet. Even so, we can hope that if and when Rusty goes down in a blaze of glory, he ends up in Missy's Mansion.
Read an interesting thing / difference on GB about Rusty from script / leaked screener to final episode. [sp]In the original, he beamed back to the Dalek ship and self destructed. Sequence was cut from broadcast version. May have to give it a look......[/sp]
I just love everything about the tone. No slapstick. No show off writing. No clowning. It was a well written, well paced character piece that had some morality (would've liked a bit more) and danger thrown in.
The little piece of music in the 'tea' scene was haunting. Speaking of the score - the callback to the 2005 Dalek music at the end was a lovely touch. Oh, oh! Was listening out for returning pieces from Deep Breath. Noticed that "rubbish robots" recurred when 12 formulated his plan and sent Clara off to do her bit.

Also the implication that [sp]a Dalek can self destruct on a Dalek ship and take them all out. Those things are pretty big and Daleks don't explode that big. The self destruct generates a shield first anyway.[/sp] [editline]31st August 2014[/editline] Also that ending would be too similar to Dalek. People would stop seeing it as a call back and more as a copy.
I'm really interested to see what's going on with "Missy" and the promised land/heaven she keeps talking about.
I daresay I have already found these two episodes more memorable and re-watchable than most of the last two series. Hopefully the start of a very good age of Who for this fan. With the 50th as an exception, I haven't run to iPlayer straight after the episodes since the first half of Series 6. That feels a bloody long time ago now :( Welcome back, Doctor Who. I hope that you're here to stay, this time.
Daleks do explode pretty big when self destructing, didn't the one in Dalek need to have a shield around itself to contain the explosion? I'll say I did love the tone of this episode, it the right mix of dark and light. [editline]31st August 2014[/editline] Did anyone else feel the Missy part should have come at the end of the episode? It took us right out of the action.
Won't be for everyone, but I like the idea of following a character direct to Missy if that character is dispatched mid-episode. Deliberate pull away to somewhere completely different.
what i think missy is doing is [sp]pulling people away a moment away from their death, exactly as the doctor did to journey blue this episode. why she is doing this, i'm not sure, but it could very well fit into the theory that 'heaven' is a TARDIS[/sp]
Eh, they're making it seem like Missy is [sp]the female Doctor people have been wanting, just not in their own solo run.[/sp] Can't imagine why she wouldn't be thus far, but who knowsssssssssss
That episode was so good, I'm loving the change of pace and the change of character When Matt Smith came in I still knew that there were things he was doing often that David Tennant would equally have been likely to do, his character was mostly a change of nuance there were things happening in this episode I don't think I ever would have seen a doctor do
Does anyone else sort of feel Daleks are overused at this point and want them to go away
Does anyone else sort of feel Daleks are overused at this point and want them to go away
They won't go away. They need to use the Daleks in order to keep the license according to a contract with the estate of Terry Nation
Does anyone else sort of feel Daleks are overused at this point and want them to go away
No because this is the first proper dalek-centric episode in a long while I mean the daleks were in the S7 finale but so was a bunch of other races and it was hardly dalek-centric
Enter the Dalek was interesting. Acting was great (although Jenna still falls just short of the right inflection on some of her lines) but the direction felt a bit weird. The bit where the Doctor is looking right at the camera while talking to the Dalek in that long monologue felt weird and slightly too tacky. The action scenes still feel badly shot, edited and written. I'm not expecting Apocalypse Now quality firefights but I'd just love if they could make them feel a bit less stiff. I also kind of feel like it would have been nice to break from the serial format for a few episodes and just show an ongoing development of the new Doctor's discovery of self and his relationship with Clara instead of the regular 'drop her off home after every adventure' stuff. I was hoping for a real shake-up for a bit as the Doctor comes to terms with who/what he is. I'm really enjoying 12's bluntness though, although I'm having a hard time making sense of some of his lines
I felt like when Rusty re-activated and broke free it was very similar 'Dalek' and then when the other Daleks attacked the ship all of the humans were on it was like the series 1 finale, but even better. Also the humans managed to kill a Dalek, so I guess those red lasers weren't just for show. I really enjoyed the episode, it has some seriously intriguing things that drew me into the story rather than just "oh, there's a problem, doctor has to save the day." Also does it seem like Mr. Pink could be the brother of the woman soldier?
"Fantastic idea for a movie. Terrible idea for a proctologist." Fucking best line
The entrance to the TARDIS at Coal Hill was neat. 12 booting the door open :v:
[sp]Is Missy the doctor's conscience?[/sp]
Titles tweaked already:v:
I'm surprised by how much I liked Danny Pink, just by his 5 minutes appearance. He has a potential for a very interesting confrontation with The Doctor.
[sp]Is Missy the doctor's conscience?[/sp]
[sp]I think maybe missy is Rani, a female timelord from the original series.[/sp]
the recurring Roman references have to be leading up to something. Though we said the same about Christmas in s6. I hope Missy isn't another OCplsdontsteal by Moffat, I miss the RTD era when each finale seemed to have a different classic villain returning to fuck shit up. The GI was sort of a return to that but he didn't feel threatening enough to me.
