This thread is oddly positive, probably just from my perspective since, well, I hated these last two episodes. I thought they were absolutely awful and the worst yet from Moffat's run. Sorry for not going into detail since I don't want to sound like I'm going "nuh uh it sucks" but I walked out on the first episode the first time I tried to watch it and this was better but not by much.
I want it to get better, I really do. The [sp]Robin Hood[/sp] premise of the next episode seems stupid but they can make it work if it's incredibly tongue in cheek. I just really hope that this season picks up because we are not off to a good start. I guess it's good for you guys if you're enjoying it though.

Danny Pink seems quite fun though. Had a bit of a bad case of "i'm a soldier, i have ptsd, did i mention i'm a soldier with ptsd because i'm a soldier with ptsd" but I get why they're doing it, even if they were extremely ham-handed about it..
I saw the Doctor in that flash of Capaldi's eye brows in Day of the Doctor. And then I waited. Good lord, how long was it? Felt like years.
And then Deep Breath happened, and I wanted to see the Doctor, and... I did. I suppose it might have been when he feverishly found the chalk, or leapt out the window ("doors are boring"). I saw the Doctor, but I didn't quite recognize him. Sure, there was that frenzied improvisational genius, throwing itself into whatever challenge that lies ahead to right some wrong. There was that heavy, deep, sorrowful compassion--one born of great tragedy and therefore exactingly attentive to what is precious in even that most modest.
But still, I have to admit, it didn't jibe for me somehow. It wasn't that the Doctor might have killed. The Doctor kills all the time. It wasn't Capaldi's age, and the fact that I started with the modern era of young Doctors. I've long since learned to love their older predecessors.
I didn't know what it was till Into the Dalek. In Deep Breath there was no big moment of clever bluster and up-swelling theme music. There was none of the quick, arrogant braggadocio of the smartest man in the room, finding fast solutions to otherwise intractable problems with naught but talk and ego. I'd never minded going along with the rush before. Old Who was often camp, but so often great camp. New who was candy, but one usually rich and deeply, powerfully satisfying.
But this is something new. Something better. And I understood it tonight. This is a Who that finds a delicate moment for Danny Pink's tear. It's a Who that turns 4's moment of hesitation at the idea of preemptive genocide against the Daleks into a fully fleshed-out basis for an entire series, all born by the ingenious nuance of Calpadi's Doctor. It's a Who that turned one of the most famously flat companions of modern Who into a rich and sympathetic and dynamic character, convincingly, over the course of a couple episodes.
And I find myself marveling at the fact, tonight, that I started off with a show with farting aliens and animate fat. What we have now feels more mature, more realistic. This is the Nolan's Batman of Who. This is the Stargate Universe of Who.
I even appreciate and understand the score of this series now, as much as I loved "I am the Doctor," and Murray Gold's charming character-themes. 11 was a fairy tale Who. And it worked. But this is a Doctor mired in the deep darkness of all that that means. We no longer need a score to carry us along on a whirlwind tour. We now, as did the Marie Antoinette of the episode Girl in the Fireplace that was a prequel to Deep Breath, take take the slower path. I don't now agree with those fans who always lamented the quicker pace of New Who--I think it had its place and worked for what it was. But I'm glad that this show is so versatile as to work so very well with this new turn.
Best review.

Heh, the next episode is great for 12. It's a goofy Dinosaurs-esque episode that would fit 11 more and 12 spends the episode [sp]sarcastically shitting on it[/sp]. It's gonna be great. Then episode 4 is the best Nu-Who episode ever in my book.

We're not the only ones either. The reviews have been praising it as a massive improvement. This week got called potentially the best Dalek story of New-Who, certainly of Moffat's fun. Last week was praised as one of the best debut stories aside from Vastra/Jenny/Strax.
I'm honestly surprised the darker more dramatic tone hasn't been going down too well amongst a couple of posters. Like I'd understand them being iffy about the change. But full on dislike? It's unexpected
If Missy ends up being River I'm gonna kill myself
[sp]I think maybe missy is Rani, a female timelord from the original series.[/sp]
That's what I thought but these are the thoughts of someone who has watched almost no classic Who so I could be way off.
I think we'll never find out what exactly Missy is. She'll probably be Death or God. The Doctor won't accept it and propose another idea.
Heaven will be a point of debate after this series ends. Was it really heaven? Was Missy really God? Or was it all deception like The Doctor says? It'll probably leave it to you.
I fully expect she isn't an existing character.

Official Nu-Who Dalek Episodes Power Ranking (as decided by your Lord and Master ElectronicG19)
Dalek >>>>>>>>> Bad Wolf/Parting > The Stolen Earth/Journey's End > Into the Dalek > Asylum of the Daleks > Army of Ghosts/Doomsday >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Victory of the Daleks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks
Omitting: Pandorica/Big Bang, Day of the Doctor, Time of the Doctor. Because while these episodes may feature Daleks, they're not the primary focus/big bad.
The soldier was still screaming - as though somebody materialized a time capsule around her one second before she died....
:v:
Are there any hints to who missy is in the scripts?

The reviews are bullshit. There's no way that this episode was better than The Stolen Earth, which I believe was the last good Dalek storyline before Moffat took over and shit all over it.

Darker? More dramatic? Oh no, that's not my problem. I disliked the direction Moffat had 11 going and I was looking forward to a tonal shift but they haven't done it very well. I like 12 come episode 2 but if this is their idea of dark and dramatic they certainly haven't done it very well. Sorry, but I'm just not feeling it.
I want it to be darker and more dramatic but I spent the last two episodes going "so when is the tonal shift going to happen". This episode was certainly trying but due to poor writing it was just extremely overdramatic and had a lot of dumb lines and ideas. 12's speech to the dalek near the end was just cringeworthy.
There's a lot of special effects budget flaunting that I can't stand too that's just there to go "ooh we have a budget now look at us" that seems to be tied into the thing that Moffat keeps doing that I really don't like that's "we need something big and flashy and explosions everywhere". I like going more balls-out with the fantastic sci-fi concepts but going Fantastic Voyage was just got a "no, not that's stupid" out of me.
I'm sorry I can't ride of the wave of positivity here but I just can't stand what I've seen so far. In a word, I think it'd dumb. It keeps doing dumb things. It's riddled with big stupid moments and ideas and speeches and lines constantly. Sorry that I can't really articulate my feelings on it better.
But Danny Pink looks interesting and Capaldi being a grumpy jerk is exactly what I want so there's potential here.
And they really need to work on the Daleks yelling all of the time, they've reached the point of just being silly. I'm gonna trust you on episode 4 being good so don't let me down.
[editline]31st August 2014[/editline]
I can see everything they were trying to do in this episode and they just did it all wrong. They were trying to do their take on Dalek and just didn't do it right.
And despite an ostensibly increased special effects budget the skeleton shot when Daleks kill people somehow looks a lot worse than back in Dalek.
So we get word that Deep Breath is the most watched non-special episode since The Eleventh Hour and as you might expect, parts of the Internet are saying that the figures aren't good enough :v: Actually quite funny.

As they've said a lot of times: The tonal shift is gradual until episode 6 which Moffat says is the first episode to have the completely new approach.
You keep saying "They". "They" did it wrong. The writers of Doctor Who did it wrong? By who? It's their rules. This Dalek story was imho perfect. A review on Blogtor Who summed up the Daleks perfectly. With the exception of Dalek and Genesis and Into the Dalek they''re usually quite dull. But with a moral dilema at the centre it's perfect.
I think you're expecting the tonal shift to be so different that children still wouldn't be able to watch it. Which would be a travesty.

Oh man that episode was really awesome, I knew they said he was going to be darker but Jesus.
Hopefully Missy isn't some Mary sue. Though if someone like her was playing the doctor in the future i'd be interested in watching it though i wonder how much of the fanbase you would lose .

I want her to turn out to be some sort of crazy dimension lord who's a parody of DW fangirls. Like, in the finale, she abducts the Doctor, shows him all the 'fan fiction' she's enacting with characters she's taken from the earlier episodes, chases him around trying to turn him back into David Tennant, then summons Sherlock from another universe and tries to have the Doctor make out with him.

Am I the only one who doesn't like these new titles? I mean, they're cool in theory but the way they pulled it off just looks awkward, weird and a little bit too... childish?
I liked the whole time-vortex stuff better because it felt more serious, this feels like it's straight out of a cartoon.
Not to mention the TARDIS itself feels like it's been badly chroma-keyed into the rest of the imagery. Everything feels so two-dimensional.

The theme didn't really strike anything with me, I liked the intro graphics but I thought it was a bit childish in places too
I liked the previous theme because I like intense sorts of music, but the new one is a bit weird and all over the place and it doesn't really work for me.

I always thought that the titles were a little childish, myself. The Tardis bobbing around and being flung about, and then suddenly.. big scary Hammer Horror lightning. It's not that I don't love it, I just never felt most of the new titles were exactly mature.
